Chicago hope
Another good night for the Yankees, at least those not named Kyle Farnsworth (I'll get to him later).
New York held off another late-inning Chicago rally, taking a 7-6 win to even the series and win the season series against the defending champs. While the Yanks were talking to us reporters, Jonathan Papelbon was in the process of blowing a save opportunity against the last-place Royals, moving the Yanks three games ahead of the Red Sox, four in the loss column.
I'm not naive enough to think that Boston is done, but I will say this: If the Red Sox don't get things turned around quickly, the Yankees could find themselves four or five games ahead by the time they hit Fenway Park on August 18.
To lose two games to the Royals at this time is simply a disaster for the Red Sox. How can anyone look at that team right now and believe that they are going to overtake the Yankees?
Right now, Curt Schilling is the only starter on the Sox who I would trust on any given day. Josh Beckett may have 13 wins, but he has been every bit as inconsistent as Randy Johnson this year, and people in New York wanted to send the Unit packing on several occasions.
Speaking of Johnson, he pitched a terrific game on Wednesday. Forget the fact that he fell apart in the seventh after losing the no-hitter. For him to throw six no-hit innings against a team like Chicago is very impressive. Villone did a great job cleaning up the mess, and if not for Farnsworth's disastrous inning, the win would have been much easier than it was.
As for Farnsworth, I'm willing to give him a pass on this outing. In his previous 16 outings dating back to June 28, he had allowed one run. That's it. Everyone is entitled to a bad night at work. If he does it again the next time, that's when you should be a bit concerned.
Robinson Cano had another great night, both offensively and defensively, while Bobby Abreu snapped a 163-at-bat homerless streak and drove in three runs.
The Yankees just have an attitude about them at the moment that suggests that they don't plan on relinquishing first place again this year. There's a lot of time left, but I have no reason to believe that they'll sniff second place again.

Right now the only concern for the Yankees is the bullpen. It's not that they aren't doing the job, it's the fact that they are being worked so hard. (At least it appears to me that they are.)
Here's hoping Moose can pitch 7-8 innings tonight and give the 'pen a bit of a rest. I wouldn't be opposed to a complete game either, but the reality of the AL is that, unless the pitcher is blowing the other guys away, he doesn't go the full nine. And I don't think Chicago is going to get completely shut down in the first six like last night.

Congradulation for Yankee's victory.I come from Taiwan, the same nation with Wang.I am very proud of him, even though there are few poor pitchings of him at times. But I think he will be the ace of Yankee.I began to be the fan of Yankee last season for the sake of Wang.
Anyway,i would like to say hello to every Yankee's fans.Let's pray the Yankee to get the champion this season.
Go go Yankee, go Wang!!!

c-layton--- i love wang enough for the both of us. anyone on this blog will agree. no worries there. as for the game tonight, to be honest guys, i missed the whole thing (though was checking scores on my phone and had several of my friends texting me with score updates) all i can say is WOW. if we can win vs the "wold chamption white sox" while boston loses 2 of 3 (so far) to the royals, maybe i can not stress so much. i dont want to take back my words, but as of right now, good stuff for us. go moose tonight. ill bet he'll be good and dominant after last saturday. okay, its like 5 something in the morning and i need to get to sleep. someone wake me in time for the pregame show tomorrow.

Wake up Ashley, wake up!! It is Game Time! WAKE UP!
Oops, never mind, it is AM, not PM.
I missed the whole game yesterday. I did not get home until after it was over. I did see some of the Red Sox game last night and the Red Sox announcers said Randy Johnson had a no hitter at the end of 6 and the Yanks were up 5-0.
Then I said oh good, the Yanks will win 7-6 sarcastically.
Then I came home to see they won 7-6 and the Red Sox lost as Papelbon took the loss and blew the save. I need to go out more.
Glad I missed Farns' meltdown. Bathing in Pepto would still have left me roiling in pain. REALLY glad I missed it!
Glad the Yanks won and Robbie Cano looks really strong.

Yeah, last night was a good night all around for the Yanks.
Randy was the RJ of old, and the bullpen did a great job (with 1 notable exception *cough* Farnsworth.)
Rivera bounced back from 2 nights ago, which is to be expected, and the offense did a great job of getting on base and being patient...oh yeah and cranking homeruns.
Also, I nearly jumped out of my seat watching gameday as good ole' Papelbon blew his 2nd consecutive save AGAINST THE ROYALS! HAHAHAHAHA.
Things are looking up in Yankee land right now, and as Torre says, lets just keep the ball rolling. Momentum only lasts as far as the next days starting pitcher. So get your Moose hats on! GO MIKE!
Also, everytime I watch Farnsworth blow up like that I keep hoping he'll throw at someone and they'll charge the mound and we'll get to see him lay-out tackle someone else. Seriously, I think it everytime. :)

You know something funny? At the beginning of the season, would anyone have thought that we'd be capable of beating the White Sox with a lineup missing Giambi, Matsui, Sheffield, and (after he left the game) Johnny Damon'? A follow-up question to that is...could the Yankee bats have possibly looked more confident than they did last night, despite missing so many?
I still think Jose Veras should have gotten a shot in the 8th inning, considering the Yanks had a 5-run lead...I don't see why he couldn't have been yanked at the first sign of trouble and THEN replaced with Farnsy. And who knows? Maybe Paul wouldn't have had to stock up on Pepto. Of course, Torre probably didn't anticipate his giving up 4 runs in less than an inning......but like Mark said, it's nothing to worry about.
Those numbers about Papelbon are very interesting. Only 7 of his saves came against .500+ teams, and only 2 of THOSE were 1-run saves. Of course, last night he couldn't handle a 1-run save against the WORST team, so I can only wonder how he would do in October...IF the Red Sox make it. Even the Wild Card is looking more and more out of reach for them.
One more thing: MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSE!!!!
Report any abuse or spam
Mark: I echo all those sentiments! One thing though, do you mean you "have no reason to think the yanks won't sniff second place again," or "no reason to think they *will* sniff second place again?" The double negative in the former suggests you do think Bos. will overtake us as some point.

I really hope Damon can play today...he owns Javy Vazquez.

On the Yanks website they said taking him out was just a precaution. Damon himself said he expects to play tonight if Torre lets him, and he said he'll definately play Friday.

Who knows with Dotel...he was supposed to be back at the all-star break.
Also, anyone else got some love to take Farnsworth out of the 8th inning role to be replaced by either Proctor or...VILLONE?
I think there's little doubt that Farnsy has been our most inconsistent reliver this year.
Report any abuse or spam
I'd have to agree that Farnsy is our most inconsistent reliever, but it's not saying all that much since our bullpen has been quite solid this year in my opinion.
Anyway, great night yesterday. Not only did the Yankees win and the Red Sox lose (to the ... Royals), but the Rockies ended the flippin' Dodgers' winning streak at last! =) Now here's hoping the Rockies win today as well to split the four-game series.
Report any abuse or spam
Well that might be a little bit of overkill considering prior to last night he'd give up one run since the AS Break. He had a bad night - it happens - can't forget they were facing a powerhouse offensive team who punish bad pitches. Not like he had a meltdown against.. oh .. the Royals or something, lol.

Yeah, I must say that there are lots of interesting races goin gon in Baseball this year. 4/6 Division titles are in doubt, and the wildcards are all close.
Im really rooting for the Reds for some reason, I usually don't care about them, but with all the deals they made at the dealine, plus how they're gaining on the untouchable Cardinals (over the last few years) they've got me supporting them now.

from the Newark Star Ledger:
"The Yankees yesterday signed ninth-round draft pick Mark Melancon, a right-handed reliever from the University of Arizona who was projected as a possible first-round pick before being sidelined with an elbow injury.
The Yankees are said to be close to signing first-rounder Ian Kennedy, a right-hander from Southern Cal, for what is expected to be a bonus in the $2 million range.
A fan who jumped from the upper deck at Yankee Stadium onto the netting behind home plate has been banned for life from the ballpark and could be sent to jail, a judge said yesterday.
Scott Harper, 19, of Armonk, N.Y., pleaded guilty to reckless endangerment following last season's plunge at the stadium. District Attorney Robert Johnson recommended probation and restitution to the Yankees, but Harper rejected the deal."

Mark, you have to be kidding me man? Johnson should have been passed by two years ago! The guy is a head case, so he pitches a no hitter into the 7th, then falls apart???? Is that what you call our ace, please. Farnsworth is awful lets face it Joe Torre even said you never know what your going to get from him. Ok, Ok I'll concede that that the pitching has been good enough to get us to 1st place but you and I know that Boston had a lot to do with that! They too are having a mess to clean up with the pitching lets just hope that they don't tidy things up just in time to beat us head to head.
We have at least 2 of our 5 starters who are not lets just say dependable! Johnson and Wright. The Bullpen, wow Farnsworth ought to retire, he stinks and thats that! I'm not cutting him any slack, a bad day at the office really, how about April, May, June and July? Like I said before don't know who is worst Gordon or Farnsworth?

Looks like we've got a replacement for vintage Sam.
If you're going to be on Randy Johnson for taking a no-hitter into the 7th, then finishing with a 6IP, 2ER line, then you're really reaching for arguments. The guy got roughed up by the heart of the toughest lineup in all of baseball. Things like that are going to happen sometimes. As for Farnsworth, were you paying attention to any games at all between the All Star break and the day before yesterday?
Oh yeah, and I don't know if you were aware, but we did win last night. Stop creating a problem where it doesn't exist and be happy that we won last night.
Report any abuse or spam
A-men.
Also Jared Wright is 4-1 since the begining of July and has gone 5+ in almost every start since then.
By the way Joe G. I don't hear ANYONE around here calling Johnson our ace anymore. I think that there's little doubt that Moose has taken that role, and that Wang might have even moved into our 2 spot. Johnson is a 3 at best in our rotation now, and how many other teams have a lefty pitcher who can take a no hitter into the 7th to start game 3 of a playoff series huh? Not many.
Sure he's not the RJ he used to be (98 mph and all) but hes still **** good. Since July 6th Johnson is 3-2, ok not great, but in those starts (7 total starts) hes given up 3ER or less 5 times, and went into the 6th inning or later 6 times. So what exactly are you complaining about from our 3rd starter.
People need to forget the RJ he used to be and look at the numbers that he IS putting up this year, which are still up there in terms of left-handed power pitchers.

Not to mention, how many teams have their 1-2-3 pictchers all with over 12 or more wins? Anyone? lol

Hey Joe ... welcome to the blog. About time you showed up.
Folks, Joe is the original Russ. He is a very good Yankees fan, but he epitomizes the attitude of "If they don't win the World Series, the entire year was a terrible failure" that many fans have taken.
Joe, I don't remember writing that Randy was their ace anymore. He is likely the third best starter on the team, and I challenge you to find a better No. 3 starter anywhere in baseball.
If a Yankee fan can't be happy with this team right now, he will never be happy. Good to see you, Joe.

Looking ahead:
• Friday: Angels (LHP Joe Saunders, 3-0, 1.29 ERA) at Yankees (RHP Cory Lidle, 9-7. 4.59 ERA), 7:05 p.m. ET
• Saturday: Angels (RHP Kelvim Escobar, 8-9, 3.73 ERA) at Yankees (RHP Jaret Wright, 8-6, 4.38 ERA), 1:20 p.m. ET
• Sunday: Angels (RHP Jered Weaver, 7-0, 2.20 ERA) at Yankees (RHP Chien-Ming Wang, 13-4, 3.69 ERA), 1:20 p.m. ET
Those matchups scare the bejeesus out of me. Joe Saunders is a lefty, and the Yanks have done well against lefties this year, but we've never seen him before, have we? Jered Weaver will be difficult, too, unless he follows Weaver tradition in his ability to pitch at THE Stadium. Out of those 3 games, I think our best shot is Saturday against Escobar.

Weaver has slowed down a bit in his last 3 starts, so maybe the Yankees can strike the iron while it's hot. Besides, he's up against Chien-Ming Wang, so I have a feeling that one will either be a pitcher's duel or, if not, then a solid Yankees win.
The fans will be the biggest factor in those games. If we can scare those rookies a little bit at the stadium, then they will buckle under the pressure and start panicking and overthrowing.

Interesting that apparent Twins fan ******************@mail.com is upset that the Yankee ownership actually spends money on the team.
Due to the largess of multi-billionaire Carl Pohlad, owner of the Twins, who has tried to eliminate the team in backroom deals with the commissioner to further line his pockets, has managed to carefully keep the payroll under certain thresholds to be sure he receives not only the revenue sharing from all the teams but the luxury tax from the Yankees and occasionally the Red Sox.
Does he spend that money on the team? Nope. Right into his pocket.
Yet this alleged fan, who somehow thinks fans of spending money on baseball rather than pocketing it would prefer his owner who would on a whim terminate his team, fire all the people working for the team from hot dog vendors to parking attendants, and then crush all the businesses that serve the Twins community.
Comparing Yankee fans to terrorists?
It is clear that not only is ******************@mail.com quite possibly the stupidest alleged baseball fan since they discovered that the shape of a baseball is not flat, but he/she/it is wasting oxygen when higher level life forms could be utilizing it.
