Here we go again
About three weeks ago, I wrote about the peaks and valleys that take place during the baseball season. One week, a team can look unbeatable. The next, not so much.
Last week, I wrote that there was no reason to think that the Yankees would sniff second place again. Then they lost two of three to the Angels while the Red Sox swept the Orioles, trimming the lead to one game (two in the loss column), and now Yankees fans are acting as though Boston has taken control of the AL East.
They haven't.
In fact, if the playoffs started today, Boston would be going home altogether.
Yes, the Sox swept the O's, but this wasn't exactly a solid series for them. David Wells did give them his first good start of the season, but Jon Lester allowed four runs in five innings and Jason Johnson gave up seven in 5 1/3. This team still has its share of pitching issues, and putting the bats to work against Baltimore doesn't change that.
The Yanks have some issues of their own, as Wang was hit hard for a second straight start. That is probably somewhat unsettling to Joe Torre and his team, but I don't think anybody is too concerned ... yet.
New York has an opportunity to build some momentum this week heading into their 11-game road trip. With one more against the Angels and three against the Orioles, the Yanks need to take 3 of those 4 before heading to Fenway for five games in four days.
Of course, those five games (plus the four against the Red Sox in the Bronx in September) will likely determine who wins this division. That's how it should be. You want to put Boston in the rear-view mirror? Go beat them.
A win against John Lackey on Monday will probably turn people's opinions around again. Highs and lows ... welcome to the pennant race.
I'm reading all these ARod bashing articles today and how his ninth inning homer was "meaningless" but rarely a mention of Giambi's. What I don't understand is why no one is mentioning that if Jeter or Abreu get on, it's a tie game, if they both get on, Giambi gets the walk off. Where are the mentions of that scenario? Why is it always on Arod?

From Today's NY Post
August 14, 2006 -- Octavio Dotel looks great in the minors, but general manager Brian Cashman cautioned pa tience regarding Dotel's major-league return.
"He's certainly getting close," Cashman said before yesterday's 5-3 loss to the Angels. "We'll take him when he's ready.
"Now you have to re member, he had two rehab stints that he had to shut down (with tendinitis) when he got close. We want to make sure he's ready. He's just not ready yet."
On Saturday, the 32-year-old righty threw another scoreless inning of relief, this time for Triple-A Columbus. He needed 13 pitches in the eighth inning, throwing nine strikes and allowing one hit and whiffing one with two groundouts. Cashman said Dotel hasn't thrown in back-to-back games yet, and the GM was mum on the topic of when that would occur. But the pitcher felt he was ready on Thursday after a perfect inning for Double-A Trenton.

Sunny, if you think that is bad, here is something I mentioned last night on our Internet Yankee show...
On Saturday, I watched the Yanks then went to volunteer for a Miracle League game. In driving to the Miracle League game, I put on WCBS 880 Am to hear the news. Do you know what the lead was for the sports report?
It was NOT "Cano and Damon Hrs lead Yanks to victory". Instead, it was...
"Despite Alex's 20th error of the season, the Yanks still win."
I'm not kidding. That was the lead.
No love from even his flagship radio station.

And if I remember correctly, there are 24 other members of the NY Yankees. I don't remember this being the ARod Yankees. I'm tired of the media (and everyone else) blaming Arod for all the losses, and the Yankees winning "despite" Arod's "lackluster performances". I don't recall Arod playing all 4 infield positions or him batting 1-9. Does Arod need to play better - I think he can and there's room for improvement based on his past performances, but no one man is going to win 162 games all by himself even if he hits .500 and has 100 homers and 200 rbi and 0 errros in one season. No pitching, no winning. Baseball is a team game and everyone has to play well to win. If Arod goes 4-4 and everyone else whiffs, I think we still lose.
Report any abuse or spam
You made my point before I could finish typing. This I think is getting ridiculous.
Report any abuse or spam
If Wang pitches a 9 inning shut out and we win 3-0 - it would say "Arod's homer a non clutch" and we win "despite Arod's questionable defense" or some **** like that. Move on media people. I foresee that if Arod does turn this around and does .500 for the rest of the season and belts out 20 clutch homers, NO ONE will report how great Arod is doing - it will be how the entire TEAM is hot... sigh

BTW, if you never heard of the Miracle League, go to

I was at that game, and I don't even remember him having an error. I remember his two doubles, but I don't remember the error. I brought a sign to the game that read: "A-Rod, we boo because we love" I think that motivated him to hit those two doubles.
By the way, if anyone goes to Yankee stadium, try to get the right field bleacher seats its amazing out there.
Report any abuse or spam
Concerning Wang's recent struggles, am I just crazy or does he consistently throw one pitch all game? I don't see him throwing anything besides his sinker, which make him fairly predictable to hit by major league standards.
Report any abuse or spam
Give that guy a break. He has struggled for all of 2 games (more like 2 innings). Even those 2 were not like he did not give a chance for the offense. By Wang's standards they were not good. But he still kept the team in the game. He failed the team but the team failed him more. How many times did Wang bail the offense out and also saved the bullpen? Countless.
Report any abuse or spam
John, most pitchers who throw sinkers normally throw that pitch about 80-90% of the time...Wang occasionally mixes in a slider and sometimes a 4 seam fastball.
Report any abuse or spam
Perfect blog Mark. As always the Yanks and Sox will battle it out down the stretch and both teams will have good games and bad, as well as good weeks and bad.
The most important thing is patience. And maybe a bottle of pepto.
It will all turn out well in the end.
Report any abuse or spam
Despite his struggles Wang is atill one of the best pitchers in all of baseball.
If he does not win his next game his wife will be deported and he will have to marry Ashley. And Vince and Eric will move in with them as Ashley's brother Darryl and her other brother Darryl.
Report any abuse or spam
Wang has been great and is entitled to a bad game or two. It is frustrating when they come back-to-back. I just hope he is not going through a tired arm phase. I don't think he is used to pitching this many innings.
Report any abuse or spam
john, seriously, give wang a break. his sinker is exactly what has made him one of the best pitchers in baseball. just because he has had 2 games where he hasnt been amazing as he was in the previous months doesn't mean that his pitching is not effective.

Ashley, one of the Bob Newhart Shows, I think the one called Newhart where he owned a country inn up in Vermont, had characters Larry, Darryl, and Darryl.
Larry would enter and introduce his brother Darryl and his other brother Darryl. The Darryls would usually leave all the talking to Larry and often one of them carried a sack with a critter or something in it.

Not to stray from the Wang topic but here is an interesting article recapping A-Rod's struggles thus far. From what I could tell it isn't very condemning either.

Arod can't be blamed for Yankees losing but he can take some of it for them not winning. When players look up to him and see him struggling esecially defensively it brings people down. Players live of from making good plays in the field , from a good pitch to a jeter-esque throw or a dive, it's a big boost. A-Rod doin fine with the bat he just needs to show some grit on the field. He needs to go to Larry or Donny or back to basics somethin cause he does not have it. Hopefully just a blip on radar for him.

That Newhart Show was very funny, one of the best of the 90s I think.
Bob Newhart is one of my all time favorites. It was a thrill for me to actually meet him. I ate lunch next at a table next to him in the commisary on the Paramount lot in LA.
Using every wit I had about me to impress and stun him I think the exact quote from me was, "Ummm hi!"

Ashley, Nick at Night has many shows that ran before I was around as well as shows I grew up with. "I Love Lucy" was out of first run TV before I was born but I am sure I have seen every episode 100 times. I think all of the Three Stooges were dead before I was born but I have seen all of their stuff.
Some TV shows are timeless but I am still surprised at the references from the past younger people get today.
I have friends in their sixties who refer to things before my time and I often don't have the same sense of reference, in my forties, since their pop culture did not translate as easily to my era.

Years ago I used to have cable and I was such a type A personality I would tape movies from HBO/Cinemax/Showtime and watch them in fast forward because I did not have time for the whole movie. But each time I sat down to actually watch a movie the cable would go out. Or each time I would tape something the cable would go out.
The cable was going out 4 out of 7 days a week. I would complain and they would say it was a temporary outage or I was the only one to complain. I got so frustrated I terminated my relationship with the cable company in a less than kind way.
I got out of the TV habit quickly after that. And now I enjoy buying or renting movies on dvd. And watch the whole movie.

Time to break the slump, Jorge.
Report any abuse or spam
Way to get that runner to 3rd A Rod....right, fundamental baseball......GEES...could have runners on the corners
Report any abuse or spam
Alex you will be on the road for 3 weeks? Mass? Montreal? PA?
I love Montreal, though I have not been there in a while.
Report any abuse or spam
i love you guys
Report any abuse or spam
It's amazing the respect that Cano gets, seeing as though it's only his second year. He's earned it though.
Report any abuse or spam
Jorge breaks the slump, but
####!
Report any abuse or spam
lol, did giambi really think he's the road runner all of a sudden? ha...nice way to get called out =)
Report any abuse or spam
Yay Jorge
Ugh Giambi
Report any abuse or spam
Come on Posada,,do SOMETHING, get a RUN IN
Report any abuse or spam
I really hope Giambi gets his *** reamed for that bone head move.
Report any abuse or spam
sma, very typical of you...do you cream yourself when arod makes an out?
Report any abuse or spam
Yeah Paul it's from about the 15-31, Wedding in Massachusetts, moving my brother into college in Montreal, and we have a town house in PA so we'll stay there in between.
Report any abuse or spam
ok, that was gross...lol, didnt mean to say that.
Report any abuse or spam
Guys. Please explain the plays. You are breaking the suspense but not explaining what happened.
Report any abuse or spam
I would really put Jorge 9th til he breaks out of his slump. Maybe take off any pressure.
Report any abuse or spam
Double, walk, single, and no runs. Ouch.
Report any abuse or spam
********* can't score again, *** guys, the most clutch thing they have been doing is striking out lately.
Report any abuse or spam
No Lola, I'd cream if he did something productive to help this team win......A Rod gets runner to 3rd, we'd be up......this won't do the trick when we play Boston who is batting like .300 at home...another bad inning....should have gotten 1 out of that minimum
Report any abuse or spam
Giambi ran past Larry Bowa's stop sign and was thrown out.
The Yanks have had WAY too many innings like that one lately.
Report any abuse or spam
Giambi doubled, Alex grounded out...but to third so Giambi couldn't advance. Cano walked, Posada singled but Giambi went through the stop sign and was thrown out by a mile, and Wilson made the last out.
Report any abuse or spam
Sam, i definitely agree...
i just hope u'd criticize the rest of the team equally when they make a critrical out. seems you get an automatic alert when arod does something cause thats when you pop out of no where.
Report any abuse or spam
Reggie Willis?
Never heard of him.
It's silly what managers do to avoid lefty/righty matchups.
Report any abuse or spam
The main reason they didn't score in that inning?
Giambi ignoring the stop sign.
Report any abuse or spam
The fact is ARod is hitting pretty well this month. Jeter, Damon, and Jorge are not hitting well at all.
Report any abuse or spam
I agree Paul. Jeter, Damon and Posada are not hitting at all. But they will come out of the slump soon.
Report any abuse or spam
imagine if it was arod that ran through the stop sign...boy, we'd be calling for his head!
Report any abuse or spam
Torre should find a way to put Bernie in the lineup atleast every other game. He has been really hot and clutch.
Report any abuse or spam
Jeter looked good yesterday, and Jorge got a hit today. Hopefully they're breaking out.
A Randy K.
Report any abuse or spam
damon's new nickname for this month is 04 (as in 0 for 3, 4, 5 etc). ha ha...so is georgie's...but yeah..no one notices, cause we are busy watching how alex scratches his head with his left or right hand, and writing a critism of it.

Report any abuse or spam

I agree to a point Lola, but A Rod for most part is hitting 4th and suppose to drive in runs or at least get runners over or something productive. Damon job is to get on, not to drive in runs. My throat is too sore to yell at A Rod tonight, but there is just something about him, can't put my finger on, that I have never liked about him, I am sorry.

A delivery by the Melkman. Now JD must PULL the ball.

Report any abuse or spam
let's not kill giambi all right wilson did strike out so who knows what happens with cabrera up and the bases loaded, 1 run is fair cause giambi killed the momentum, but 2-3 is getting excessive

Don't know Lola. I just think he is self centered. Obviously, he is way overpaid, but who isn't in baseball? I would have taken the money too. I don't think he is the best player today in baseball. I don't know, maybe just me.

Report any abuse or spam
well Sam, i hear you. its your opinio so i wont fault you for it. Lots of people have that same argument.
But may i ask though..what about him makes you believe he is self centered as you say?
Report any abuse or spam
I pulled a little Dane Cook there.
Report any abuse or spam
Nice
Report any abuse or spam
yay for the captain!
Report any abuse or spam
I don't know, can't put my finger on it. I really can't. Just seems when he gets up to bat, I really don't get excited as I do like Giambi, Jeter, or Abreu and A Rod is suppose to produce. I know he had a great year last year. And we all go through our ups and downs, just doesn't seem like he is feared as he was w/Texas or Seattle. I am still really sore from my surgery, so I think I can watch at least 3 games this weekend. I want to see what A Rod does against Boston. I am glad he is hitting 5th today
Report any abuse or spam
It's easy to take one week, or one month, or one season, and say that A-Rod is not the best player in baseball.
But when you look at his first 10 years playing compared to the first 10 years of any player in history?
You have to be brain-dead to not admit he's one of the best ever, and arguably the best playing today.
Report any abuse or spam
I agree, looking at stats, one of the best ever. So is Tiger Woods, I have to admit, but not a huge fan of his neither. Still got 50 plus games, but I think A Rod is having off year this year compared to past years
Report any abuse or spam
4500!
Report any abuse or spam
A-Rod carried the Yankees last year, but then when the playoffs came around, he wasn't there. Early this season the fans were ready to get on him at the first chance they had and they haven't gotten off him since.
Report any abuse or spam
Mark Loretta just failed to move the runner from 2nd to 3rd.
There must be something seriously wrong with Loretta, right?
Report any abuse or spam
In my opinion, it boils down to his contract. Not in baseball, finance, industry, baketball whatever that someone has been regarded as the "highest" paid and it affect them. People just naturally expect more then, sometimes unrealistically...i'd personally never want to be the highest paod anything...call it underachieving but its just too much to live up to.
As Randy gets strike out number 4500 :-D lets go RJ!!!
Report any abuse or spam
randy!! congrats! it is so nice to see him pitching well, he could be a major factor if he continues. our 3 pitcher has been pitching better than the sox 2 pitcher
Report any abuse or spam
Lot of people didn't show up against LAA in playoffs last year......hitting wise.......
Report any abuse or spam
LET'S GO YANKEES!
Report any abuse or spam
You are right Alex...i definitely do believe the angels series had a lot to do with this year, because people were just waiting to get on him...he was definitely the scapegoat of that series (the rest of the team didnt show up either...except robbie)
Report any abuse or spam
Yeah but because it's A-Rod its magnified.
Report any abuse or spam
I definitely hope they got RJ the ball.
Only the 3rd pitcher to ever get that many Ks right?
Report any abuse or spam
....for over 50 years Walter Johnson had the record at 3508...
Report any abuse or spam
Yes. Behind Nolan and Roger.
Report any abuse or spam
Surprising. Beckett is behind 5-0, but he hasn't really thrown more pitches than Detroit's starter. Only like 5 more through 3 innings.
Report any abuse or spam
A-Rod didn't run to second base right...I think he should be traded.
Report any abuse or spam
Depends on what you do with your pitches/hits....
Kind of like how time of possession in football is overrated. In 1994 Penn State was undefeated. Their offense only averaged about 20 minutes a game in time of possession...but they averaged about 47 pts a game. The offense was so explosive that they didn't have too many long, consuming drives. They'd score from anywhere, anytime.
Report any abuse or spam
*sigh* Alex cant win...

Let Wilson bat against the lefties, since Phillips can't hit 'em. But, please, bench Wilson on the righties.
Report any abuse or spam
i think we should all agree that a-rod cant win, and move on, and maybe stop talking about him for a little bit. it was very peaceful in the past few weeks when a-rod was not the topic of conversation 24/7.
Report any abuse or spam
that inning was just plain ugly
Report any abuse or spam
Wilson is either strike out or home run. His last HR was against a RHP I think.
Report any abuse or spam
I agree. Replace Wilson with Phillips tonight. See what he can do.
Report any abuse or spam

Report any abuse or spam
Hey everybody!
I came back from dinner to see DJ justified my wearing his jersey today, yet I see lots of grumpiness here. What have I missed?
Report any abuse or spam
I live in Eastern PA...and I am not an Eagle fan....so you can understand that the whole A-rod thing reminds me of the endless and nauseating all T.O. all the time deal of last year (and it still hasn't stopped here, believe you me)
Report any abuse or spam
Earlier in the year the Big Unit would have just given up and walked that guy after he was behind 3-0.
Report any abuse or spam
Karl you must now wear that jersey every game.
Report any abuse or spam
i'd rather be talking about TO than A-rod
Report any abuse or spam
I know what you're talking about Mike...T.O. was liked for about a year in Philly then as soon as he said something about McNabb the fans turned on T.O. McNabb is like Jeter to the Eagles fans.
Report any abuse or spam
...and Karl, you are not allowed to wash it.
Report any abuse or spam
I hate the Eagles. I hate the Flyers even more. I hate the 76ers most. I think they may have a baseball team also.
I lived in Allentown some time ago and hated the Philly sports.
Report any abuse or spam
yes posada got the ball for johnson.
Report any abuse or spam
I lived in Exton, PA for 11 years...I like to see the Phillies do well but that's really the only Philadelphia team I casually like.
Report any abuse or spam
Ugh, this jersey's going to get dirty.
I have a 2nd Jeter shirt. Am I allowed to wear that one?
Report any abuse or spam
Just like me, Paul. I hate all Philly sports teams and live near Allentown.
Report any abuse or spam
no Karl, not sure if the rules on lucky shirts...can you wash them?
Report any abuse or spam
If you guys think you are having too much fun and want to get mad for any reason, visit Ian's blog.
Report any abuse or spam
Why, Vik?
Report any abuse or spam
I hated the 76ers the most because of Iverson, but I loved Julius Erving. He was the best basketball player ever, bar none. I saw him play a lot when he was with the Nets.
The team I hated the most was the Flyers. I was an avid Islander fan then and the Flyers were the dirtiest team ever. Worse than professional wrestling which is an act.
I used to watch Bobby Clark spear people in the back and almost never get caught. he was the dirtiest of the dirty.
Report any abuse or spam
All the typical redsox whining and Jeter Vs Ortiz comparisons etc
Report any abuse or spam
Buckle down Randy
Report any abuse or spam
So what do you all think? Can we get 2 more innings out of RJ?
Report any abuse or spam
RJ is putting together 2 great starts in a row.
A 3rd would be crucial. He pitches saturday.
Report any abuse or spam
Depends on next inning Rob. Yeah I know I am genius.
Report any abuse or spam
RJ is at 76 pitches through 5. Maybe he can go 2 more.
Report any abuse or spam
The good Randy tonight, just like last time. We really need that.
The key to a good run is getting 3 pitchers to all click simultaneously.
For example, we all know Guidry went 25-3 in 1978. The key to the great comeback that year? Well, Gator was consistent throughout.
Ed Figueroa started 7-7, then finished 13-2 to go 20-9.
Catfish Hunter started 3-4, then went 9-2 in the last great run of his career to finish 12-6.
Report any abuse or spam
RJ always pitches poorly on Saturday day games.
Report any abuse or spam
It would be nice to get two more so we can give the 'pen a bit of a rest. But I don't want to risk tiring him out for his Saturday start. I mean, it's not like he's 40 anymore, right?
Report any abuse or spam
Boy, it sure would be nice if we could put some more runs on the board.
Report any abuse or spam
I loved watching Guidty pitch.
He was fast and sailed through games. Unlike Vazquez who is like a human rain delay.
Guidry sailed through games. And you just KNEW after 2 strikes he would get another.
Report any abuse or spam
um, that didn't work.
I do like the aggressive call though.
Report any abuse or spam
God Blessed!!
Report any abuse or spam

Report any abuse or spam
DJ's heating up again.
He must have heard the Sox fans on the other blog ripping him.
Report any abuse or spam
If things do even out in baseball, then the Red Sox should go 8-20 in their last 28 games with about 15 of their losses coming in the 9th or in extra innings.
Report any abuse or spam
johnson would be absolutely huge if he came through saturday, i sense beckett will perform like schilling would though and johnsonw ill perform like beckett usually does.

Schill vs Moose on Sunday
Report any abuse or spam
GREAT inning by Farnsy.
Remember when we were talking about Matsuzaka? A friend gave me this about him...in high school (or whatever it is in Japan)...there was a 3 game championship.
Game 1...He goes 17 innings and 250 pitches.
Game 2...Plays the OF...and comes in to save the game in the 9th.
Game 3...pitches all 9 innings...no-hitter.
Are you kidding me?
Report any abuse or spam
According to Gameday, each team has left 14 on base tonight
Report any abuse or spam
I'm just catching up on the posts and flipping back and forth between the Yankees and little league game tonight. Noticed the talk about moving runners and how A-Rod failed and Damon produced.
Well I find it interesting that A-Rod, the guy people want to "drive people in" is criticized for PULLing the ball in an attempt to drive the ball. Yet Damon, a guy who is expected to "get on base" (for A-Rod to drive him in, and when he doesn't do that as of late A-Rod doesn't have runners to drive in therefore failing) and he PULLs the ball (weaker than A-Rod) as is congratulated on here.
This is the exact thing that is happening with A-Rod. He is expected to drive in the runner from 2nd but also expected to just hit the ball to the other side and move the runner to 3rd. I mean come on.

It's called situational hitting.

Report any abuse or spam
kay just said yankees are above the league leading teams in scoring without a homerun
Report any abuse or spam
EZ brother comes through for the Yanks again :-D
Ha ha, i love them!!! :-D
Report any abuse or spam
Yankeefan, was that in reference to my post? Because if it was I agree with you and disagree with you at the same time. It is your job to at the very least move runners along especially with no outs. But also, A-Rod is up there to drive the ball, and from what I recall (not positive) but he hit an inside pitch, which you are not going to ask him to try and push that to the opposite field, that isn't his swing. Also, it is much easier for a lefty to pull the ball and move the runner than a righty (other than Jeter) to hit the ball the other way.
Report any abuse or spam
i use veras if we have a 4+ run lead
Report any abuse or spam

Report any abuse or spam
Floating an idea...why not start Ponson Thursday and hold Lidle back for Friday? That would make me more confident.
Abreu hits lefties well and Romero is a terrible lefty specialist. Hope i didnt curse that.
Report any abuse or spam
TRADE HIM! HE IS NOT CLUTCH!
i think ponson wang is the best decision, ponson prob matches jason johnson and yankees win 17-12, who does wang face? lester?
Report any abuse or spam
Vince remember what I said about matching up against Abreu...make em pay Bobby.
Report any abuse or spam
yup.....gonyy ifu put ponson in thursday then he has to pitch twice as opposed to once.
Report any abuse or spam
Most likely Vince, but that means either Posada catches Lidle, or Fasano catches Lidle and Ponson.
Report any abuse or spam
My bad, hold Wright back. Not Lidle. Got the rotation confused.
Report any abuse or spam
i would think fasano catches those two
Report any abuse or spam
either way if ponson doesn't face boston he has to pitch twice
Report any abuse or spam
Yup. You have to try to move him over.
1949...last game of the year, winner takes AL pennant. Rizzuto leads off the bottom of the first with a triple. Henrich knows he can't hit Ellis Kinder and basically just throws his bat at the ball to hit a 5 hopper to Bobby Doerr. Scooter scores. Situational hitting. Henrich purposely did that. Old Reliable. The score stays 1-0 into the 8th. Yanks win 5-3, win pennant, go on to win WS.
McCarver played two years with Maris. Do you know what he said he admired the most about Maris? He said that Maris was better than anyone he ever saw (lefty hitter) at taking a fastball on the outside corner and pulling it to get the runner over. It is extremely difficult for a lefty hitter to do that.
It's something I fault Sheffield for at times too. There are times a hitter has to realize the situation. Two of the best I ever saw (righty hitters) at advancing the man from 2nd to 3rd by going the other way were Munson and Sweet Lou.
BTW, with runners on 3rd less than 2 out, Alex is driving in the run 40% of the time. 2nd worst in the majors. I'm not picking on him here, just giving the fact. He got the run in last time. The situation called for the ball to be hit in the air. He did that and almost got it out. Good job.
You have to adjust your swing to the situation at hand. That is "hitting" not "slugging."
Report any abuse or spam
woo hooo :-D yanks 5-2!!
Report any abuse or spam
I think matching up Wang with Ponson would be good especially for the bullpen. Even though Wang's last two outings haven't been his best, they haven't been horrible either (in my opinion it's just more ground balls finding holes for the most part). Wang is giving innings and if he's pitching the first game then stretching him out allows the bullpen to be rested for a possible 4 inning stint in the nightcap to compliment Ponson.
Report any abuse or spam
I love the Angels d.
Report any abuse or spam
When is the last time Ortiz got a hit? And doesn't even play field.
Report any abuse or spam
now we dont have to use Mo :-D
Report any abuse or spam
Offhandedly Mike, who's worse than A-Rod at getting runners in?
Report any abuse or spam
yankeefan, I'm not asking A-Rod to hit a home run, I'm expecting him to hit the ball hard somewhere. Also, I have to disagree with you about the difficulty to pull the outside pitch. It is much easier to try and pull the ball. The outside pitch though you aren't supposed to pull because you will most likely hit a weak ground ball. But in that situation, doing the non-fundamental thing (pulling outside pitch) is rewarded because you move the runner along.
Report any abuse or spam
Chipper Jones hit 3 hrs today.
Report any abuse or spam
nice sac fly. I love the small ball game. Why did they stop that in Baltimore and Chicago and until today?
It wins games!

They said it on ESPN, but I can't remember who it was. He was at 38% w/runners on 3rd and less than 2 out.
Beautiful. Getting insurance runs, and now 7-2.

Report any abuse or spam

Report any abuse or spam
To clarify, Vik:
Mike posted earlier that A-Rod has the 2nd-lowest % of runners driven in from 3rd in baseball. I was just wondering offhandedly who was worse, not trying to bash A-Rod.
Report any abuse or spam
OK Alex and Vince I googled a mouth grill and have to say that is the single most stupid thing I have seen this week.
Report any abuse or spam
It's extremely difficult to pull a 95 mph (or faster) fastball that's on the outside corner if you are a lefty hitter. Ask McCarver, who played for 21 years, if you don't believe me. If you are a lefty hitter with a man on 2nd and no one out, your job is to pull the ball, even if the pitch is a fastball on the outside corner. Going with it is a ground out to SS and the runner holds. Sometimes you just have to know when to give yourself up. Of course the pitcher is going to try his best to make sure that you don't succeed.
That's one reason I don't play fantasy leagues. You have the guy who doubles. I have the guy who gives himself up and grounds out to second, advancing the runner. Someone else has the guy who hits the SF. You get a run scored. Someone else gets an RBI. My guy did his job and gets nothing....except the appreciation of his teammates.
Just difference of opinion. But I loved the Munson/Piniellas who could situational-hit very well.
Well....let's get ready to celebrate a win!
Report any abuse or spam
No he doesn't. When a guy with a line like
426 25 .286 83 82 11

LOL, grills on teeth??? Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
Report any abuse or spam
sorry about the double post on the last, the site told me there was an error.
But as far as pulling the ball, there's pull hitters, they pull a pitch wherever it is. I don't know what type of hitter McCarver was, but it may have been a problem for him to pull an outside pitch. I know I get in trouble when I try to pull the outside pitch ... weak grounders to shortstop. But I'm a righty, so if a lefty is doing the same thing it's a weak grounder to second baseman and the runner moves up.
I'm not trying to attack you yankeefan, I like this debate, but I think you also have to look at how the pitcher is pitching. A lot of times they will pound righties inside, not giving them a chance to go the other way. A lot like how pitchers throw to Giambi when the shift is on. They throw inside to make him pull the ball. If the pitch is away Giambi will go the other way with it. But he is not going up to the plate with the intention of hitting a soft grounder down the 3rd base line for a hit just because noone is playing there.
Report any abuse or spam
Honestly Paul, do you think he deserves the boos. EVERY SINGLE time?? Booing him once in a while when he makes an error is ok. But not all the time. And he has been one of the better hitters recently. He still is the only one that gets booed.
