True value

While driving to the Stadium this morning, I heard Mike & Mike on ESPN Radio (whom I happen to enjoy listening to) discussing the American League's MVP race. Their belief was that Jermaine Dye will take the award, because he will have more meaningful games in which to make a difference over the final month of the season than Derek Jeter will.Derek_jeter

They also said that Ryan Howard should have the edge over Carlos Beltran, because Howard has single-handedly kept the Phillies in the wild card race, and that if the Phils win the wild card, he should win the award.

Am I missing something?

The September "Player of the Month" award is there to reward a player who has a huge September. The MVP award should represent the player who has been most valuable throughout the entire season.

With that in mind, my vote (if I had one, of course) would go to Jeter and Beltran. At least that's where I stand today.

Jeter has been the most important player on the Yankees this season, helping the team overcome the injuries to Gary Sheffield and Hideki Matsui. His numbers are impressive -- .339 average, 92 runs scored, 81 RBIs (batting second most of the year), 30 doubles, 26 steals and a .414 on-base percentage.

Yes, Dye is having a tremendous year, and he would probably place second on my ballot. Three weeks ago, I would have said that David Ortiz was my top choice, but the incredible demise of the Red Sox (as well as Ortiz's latest health problems) have practically dropped him from the race.

To reward Dye over Jeter because his team is fighting for a postseason spot in September while Jeter's team has a spot firmly in their hands is ridiculous. Jeter has helped put his team in the position it is in, and for that, he gets penalized? Puh-lease.

Same with Beltran. How would he lose the award to a player on the second-place team in his own division? The Phillies are 15 games behind the Mets! How do you think that happened? Beltran might not be the only reason for it, but he's certainly a significant piece of the puzzle.

Here's hoping that voters look at the entire season and not just September.

I understand your point Mark, and I heard the same broadcase of Mike & Mike, but their point was that the race itself, wildcard or pennant, was what focuses attention on the MVP candidate. Their point was with the Sox falling off the map, and everyone focusing on who wins the WC, every at bat by Dye will be magnified 100 fold versus Jeter's at bat's in a conference that has already be declared over by many.

How bout Fasano. That AB has me rofl.

Fasano is so slow he even slowed Gameday down.

...and that's why i don't listen to sports radio or watch sportscenter during baseball season.

I don't disagree with your assessment (I think Jeter is the MVP), but I think Mike and Mike were pointing out that the race (or lack thereof) has an impact on who wins the MVP award - rightfully or wrongly so.

They have to stop swinging at everything. Just because they're playing the Tigers doesn't mean they should start hitting the way they do.

Well, if it makes everyone rest a little more comfortably, the last time there was a tight race for the AL MVP it went to the guy whose team won the division.

That was last year, and the winner was Alex Rodriguez.

Here's hoping the writers use that logic again!

how bout some offense?

A strong September will often influence voters between candidates that are close. Also some players who aren't even on the radar right now, could get into the mix if their team makes a successful run at the playoffs. Lance Berkman for example.

Sunny ... Wright has actually gone six a bunch of times. He hasn't pitched into the seventh once, though.
As for his ability, he actually had three very good starts before these last two. I don't think he's great, but he's better than a lot of other guys. He's as good or better than the fifth starter on any other team in the Majors, with the lone exception of the White Sox.

Posted by: Mark | August 30, 2006 07:51 PM

Mark... while I don't think Wright is horrible, I have to admit I used to think #5's would be more consistent or at least go longer. In my opinion, Lidle makes a better #5 than Wright. Pitching is definitely thin around the league these past couple of years, but if Karsten's continues his impressive run, I'd take him over Wright.

if giambi, bonds, louis gonzalez or any of those guys had been hospitalized with heart troubles, what do you guys think the speculation would have been?

i'm not sayin', i'm just sayin'...

You mean the creme and the clear wasn't sun tan lotion????

2-0 tigers.

wright got the second out but, once again, can't get the third.

that's why he's no good, mark. it's that simple.

He has difficulty finishing off hitters and innings. Ergo, high pitch count, short stints.

Or if Alex were hospitalized for "strss-related" heart issues

when you struggle to put away hitters in an 0-2 or 1-2 count, and you struggle to get the third out of an inning, you're not a very good big league pitcher.

I dont know about Alex. If there's one thing I've never seen him accused of.. its steroids.

through 3 1/3 innings. has ledezma hit 40 pitches yet? even close?

if the tigers have a lead through 6, this game is as good as done. their bullpen is filthy.

Well if we lose, maybe Wright can go 8 and give up 4 runs and save our bullpen LOL

kasey,Their bullpen has to give in sooner or later.

c'mon AROD!!

****

Hey everyone!
Looks likes the offense has continued to slumber and Jaret Wright has been Jaret Wright so far.

Not encouraging.

But Boston lost again? Wow.

kaylee,

maybe, but not the way young pitchers handle the yankees. they won't be able to touch zumaya. they might get to rodney or jones, if they see either.

whatever. it's tough to win both games of a double-header and, with the red sox loss, the worst case scenario has the yankees up 8 games after today.

i still think the red sox are going to make a run when they get healthy. but the yankees control their own destiny right now. all they have to do is not play like ****. recently (with the exception of the fenway series), they haven't been able to accomplish that. even in the earlier win today, they didn't look very good.

and there it is again. two strike-outs, and then gives up a single to granderson. would it kill jaret to have a 1-2-3 inning?

kaylee, arent you a red sox fan?

Two runs through five innings isn't terrible, folks. He's got 66 pitches, so he should be able to go another 1-2 innings.

struck out the side, but allowed the single, and let monroe go from 0-2 to 3-2. this is why he'll never see the 7th inning. jaret always makes it harder on himself.

e runs thru 5. And looks good to go atleast 1 more. Kasey, even you or Russ cant ask for more than that from 4/5 starter.

e=2

Mark, what is yoru assessment on A Rod? 1 for last 27??? Wright is looking good, I agree, so far, he is doing good

apparently

I gave up on them

Wow Wright's actually looking half-decent.

I know people were talking about this a while ago, but I would much rather see Daisuke Mastsuzaka than Zito. Zito just does not impress me a lot.

Rocco:I finally came to reality.

vik and mark,

you're wright. jaret's done his job. like i said above, though, going from 0-2 to 3-2 on hitters and rarely having a 1-2-3 inning are the reasons jaret gets into trouble. he creates his own jams and, more often than not lately, he's been unable to get out of them.

good to see cano swing at the first pitch. ledezma may throw a complete game in 65 pitches tonight.

good lord the offense is awful today.

Gees, Kasey, just saw your comment, fell off my chair laughing....but your right

"Rocco:I finally came to reality.

Posted by: kayleexxx@aol.com | August 30, 2006 08:20 PM"

Did this happen about a month ago?

Yankees need a day off LOL....least we got a hit

A-Rod is in the middle of a horrific slump. It confuses me a little, because he hit well in Boston, which is where you figure he would have struggled. I think he'll come out of it, it's just a question of when.

But Zito's name sure is easier to spell. It should be
M-A-T-S-U-Z-A-K-A

Rocco:Yes I did.

if i had told you going in to the game that a young pitcher was going to silence the yankee offense, ruining what will probably be the one decent outing they get from wright for the next month, would you have been shocked?

me neither.

i don't care how poorly boston is playing, this offense has to wake up or the red sox will still be relevant in mid-september. when you have johnson, wright and lidle in your rotation, there are going to be at least three games a week where you may have to out-hit the opposition. this offense looks absolutely pathetic.

Thanks Mark

these two games, combined, may come in at a shorter length of time than any ONE of the games in the red sox series.

yea, but Posada and Abreu are not playing LOL...but I agree, no offense tonight, looks bad so far.....

and Kasey if you would have said through 5 innings, Fasano would be the only one w/a hit too....LOL

if the yankees lose, but wright actually finishes the 7th, is that a moral victory?

1-2-3.... we are going to see Wright in the 7th... shocking!

It would be nice if the offense could give Jaret some support for the nice effort he's giving out there.

Figures, can't score a lick, and Wright is going to pitch the 7th.....only 75 pitches through 6.....yes, yes, a MORAL victory LOL....is there such a thing?

I may fall off my chair, lol.

Although do I recall he got close to going 7 once before and they pulled him out for some reason?

Scored 2 runs through 14 innings at home so far UGH

lol, kasey.. thats a bit like the tree falling in the forest making a sound deal.

i'd hit and run with fasano here, but that's just me. wheels like those, you have to utilize them.

This game is on pace to go 2 hours and 15 minutes... Maybe they have dinner reservations?

Yes 2 runs is just terrible, because they're not playing the team with the best record in the majors, are they?

Fasano LOL...I have seen that Damon and Melky have tried to bunt for a hit...Fasano on base again FUNNY, I fell off my chair

Fasano has the only hit? Figures.
And now he gets a hit of a different kind. Ouch.

take.

a.

pitch.

good god.

Whats with Damon making all those outs on first pitch??

woo FINALLY - a 1-2-3 inning

Can't blame damon with blaming Cano either.

hmm did todays scouting report say something about it being mandatory to be hitting early in the count? lol

They might be a little pooped. I think I asked Mark earlier in the season about how the Yanks fared after travelling... They might be pretty worn from the 21 games in 20 days.

I know sunny. But Cano is notoriously impatient. JD is not.

FINALLY.

LOL at Kay... "lets see if they send Fasano!!!"

....

"No they won't"

2nd and 3rd, one out.

betcha they don't get a run in.

Go Melky!

You're turn captain.

Wow. Ledezma out already? with that pitch count? Amazing.

YEAH MELKY!
OK, come on and drive em in, MVP DJ!

sunny,

they had two consecutive days off. i'd hope to god they're well rested after that.

We always seem to have either Fasano, Giambi or Posada on 1B every time we get a double.

Maybe Abreu can give them patience lessons while he sits in the dugout?

Didn't know game was on ESPN, just turned it on...Fasano running is halarious....he is slower than me LOL....Jeter, take a pitch here please.....Fasano for MVP

With Jeter batting I will take that bet Kasey.

Ledezma has pitched something like 30 innings all year, so he's on a short leash.

Is Ledezma a reliever or a starter?

True - but they've played 130 games - in a marathon, after going 50 miles in a 60 mile race, you're going to be tired whether you get an hour or two hours break before finishing the race I think... but I do hope the Yanks see better and more pitches than what they're taking.

It's the 5th inning, everyone, calm down, they'll probably score some runs. Oh and Kasey the Sox are done. I doesn't matter who they get back, they ain't running the table in September. Since July 4th they Yanks are 32-17 and gained about a dozen games on the sox in the standings. Sox are done.

lol yankee_indian. that was really funny, and i was thinking of the same thing!

Ledezma usually relieves but can start. Kinda Villone-esque

Rest of team: take note how Melky WORKED the count, then got a hit

Come on Jeets.. show them who is the MVP.

i'm headed to work. it's actually the 6th inning, gabe.

and i bet you they don't score here.

enjoy the game everyone.

I'd say I'd love to see a suicide squeeze, but I don't think Fasano could make it home in time. hahaha

Ledezma is a reliever

yeah it is on espn and these announcers are driving me crazy.nice start to the inning.

Kasey - however - I agree with you that they need to see more pitches in their at bats and bat smarter.

We'll miss you and your dark cloud Kasey...

well if kasey bets it.. i have every hope they WILL score. :-) *sticks out tongue at the departing Kasey's back*

Come on Jeter

Hmmm... if Jeter gets a hit and scores 2 - does that help his MVP candidacy Mark?

CAPTAINNNNNNNN

double Jeter.......YES tie game

WOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOO

Thank you Kasey!! LOL

I hope Kasey's job is not as a fortuune teller, cause he'll be out of buisness pretty soon.

rocco:Ledzma started the game he is a reliever?

Kasey, no offense, but screw you. hahaha.

Seriously, I know you're glad you were wrong.

GO DJ!!!

MVP

MVP baby

DJ DJ DJ DJ DJ MVPMVPMVP
Hey Kasey what do I win??????

How many times do you see Jeter hit a ball down the LEFT field line?

anyone watching the game - did Melky make it home before Fasano?

JETER STEALS 3RD

captain does it agina. steals 3B

Doesn't matter how often haha. He can hit it anywhere as long as we score.

sac fly position

And DJ makes the case for Mark's post being 100% accurate.

Derek is the greatest. Period. Steals 3rd. Wow.

lol sunny. No he didn't. That would have been funny though.

alright jeter!

Closing my eyes...A Rod up...pitch around Giambi to A Rod...ever think we'd come to that?

A-Rod is coming up...

rocco:Ledzma started the game he is a reliever?

Posted by: kayleexxx@aol.com | August 30, 2006 08:43 PM

he's normally a releiver and is pitching because of the rainout i believe.

lol, sunny.

Sal was motorin' on home.

As always, it's on A-Rod.

ooo - psyche on arod - walked Giambi to get to him- what do think he'll do?

not pretty. But I'll take it.

What did he do? He got the job done. Good job A-Rod.

Well it could have been worse. At least he got the run in. Can't ask for more.

How about Jeter? Ties it up, then steals 3rd and scores the go ahead run.

nice!!!!

I'LL TAKE IT!!

AROD MVP!

grounded out to 3rd. But jeter scored.

Hey he got it in. Clutch A-Rod, 3-2.
Please do not swing at the first pitch, Robby.

Don't be pissed Arod! Thats all we needed from you!!. It might be a start... and it wasn't a double play!

Oh don't pull your wedgie out on national TV, lol.

Now the question is how many runs will wright give up in the top of the next inning?

Did the give AROD a cheer?

A Rod, got a RBI, but that still was bad

ooooh. That was close.

Oh ****. Just missed.

**** - was that close? how close was cano from hitting it out? According to Gameday, it's right on the wall.

dang cano, but we took lead....

I'm a little encouraged. ARod did not swing at pitches he shouldn't swing at and did not just look at pitches pitches he should swing.

OMFG IS WRIGHT ABOUT TO COME OUT FOR THE 7TH INNING? I'M GOING TO GO TAPE THIS.

In the future: "My son, I once was fortunate to watch Jaret Wright pitch in the 7th inning."

Is Wright actually going to start the 7th? *faints*

yes, near the wall, guy almost missed it

Rocco:I get it now.....Took me awhile. Now we hit when Ledezma leaves.

Wright is out in the 7th.....I don't have a good vibe...any of you??

Wright will be pulled if there is a baserunner i bet

yeah sunny. abt 6 inches in front of the wall.

I think my GameDay is broken. It says Wright is pitching.

and here comes Wright...leadoff single ****

Yes he started the inning *is carted to emergency room to shake off the shock*

Crud. Bad luck there. Wright gets a good ground ball, but just out of reach of Wilson.******* that the guys on, but I don't blame any body there.

Wilson should have fielded that. Got a late break on the ball.

I still think my GameDay is broken... because Proctor looks really fat...

WOW. What a play by Fasano.

FASANO MVP...YES

YEAH!!!

Way to go Fasano!

Uh, oh, Captain. You'd better be okay.

Honestly, I do not think Wilson is a better defensive 1B than Giambi. He's pretty bad.
Bruney up in the pen? ummm, why?

YEAH GOT THE GUY AT 2ND

WHO IS FASTER, FASANO OR CASEY OR ME?

What a BUSH slide by Casey....*******

Sean Casey out at 2nd, catcher Sal Fasano to shortstop Derek Jeter.

Great but what just happened?

Casey, the a-hole, took out the MVP on his slide.

I still think my GameDay is broken... because Proctor looks really fat...

Posted by: sunny615@gmail.com | August 30, 2006 08:53 PM

HAHAHAHAHAHA

I think Bernie should have had that ball.

Dang, nice try Bernie. Bernie almost made a great catch...single...one on, one out, Wright out of game

Fasano!Nice job!

Bruney?????????????????????
Wright goes 6 and 1/3! Savor the memories, cuz you're never gonna see it again.

It didnt look like it was an easy play on the replay. It would have been an excellent catch if he'd caught it.

Abreu - might have had it.

That was pretty bush league by Casey. It wasn't a DP scenario. Why is he allowed trip a player?

yea, what kind of **** slide..is Jeter OK....

Now Proctor looks like he grew fat AND a beard... what is going on with my GameDay??

dang, another single...dang Bruney

Great, there goes the lead :-(

and pitching like ****

uh-oh

sunny, just in case u dont know, the game is on ESPN.

I Rod up...2 on, 1 out

Pudge to PH

Does Bruney have any other pitch besides a fastball?

dammit!! What the F am I doing here??!?!?

uh oh...2 outs, runners moved up

2 outs tho -

Whew...2 out.

Bruney does his job. Good job!

GOOD JOB BRUNEY....YES...OK, lets all get our Pepto for Farnsy in the 8th....

Bruney is a keeper. He's only 24. He doesn't cost a fortune. And he is better than a lot of c rap on the market.

YAY!

Bruney did well.

Can MO go tonight, or did he throw too many pitches in Game 1?

Farnsy is the closer tonight, Russ. He won't pitch the 8th.

I hope.

Farnsworth is the closer tonight... Mo isnt available.

Does Bruney really throw 95+ mph?

Yeah Bruney!
I'm liking him. He's moving up the Joe Torre Trust Meter and will probably pitch some important innings down the stretch.

some insurance please.

Dotel for the 8th i bet.

Nice job bruney.

Any advice for someone going to his first ever Yankee Stadium game? I'm going Sunday and leave at 5 AM tomorrow.

Just saw the replay on Casey - that was dirty. That guy needs an elbow to the face.

Bernie growing stache too.***** Damon.

ok, thanks for info on MO

I suggest they throw a fastball at Casey's head tomorrow.

okay the internet is not helping me with my schoolm project.

at least he took that pitch

I don't think they should wait until tomorrow - right at his knee I think.

If Fasano getes on again, I'll **** myself.

OK what's with all the beanballs?

Fasano is swinging for the fences. Fair or foul.

Where is everyone on the Sox blog?

You don't want to know, Russ.

The Red Sox fans are all crying in shame, hahaha.

need a Damon HR here

I mean it so quiet over there.......

I would be crying in shame too if my team was about to fall into double digits in the GB column.

Hey Guiel with a steal. Off Pudge. Fine with me.

dang Damon...

**** those Marlins are on fire.

More Bruney?

leadoff double...UGH, had the guy w/2 strikes.

No he just got taken out.

not a good start

OK I see now.
Dotel was warming, is he coming in? Because I thought the plan was to never use him w. runners on base. And that's twice now. Sigh.

Good move. Young is only hitting .143 vs. lefties.

why isnt farnsworth in? is he being kept for the 9th inning because torre doesnt want rivera to pitch again today?

OK Villone, never mind.

No villone is in!

well, if we can keep at Detroit only scoring 1, doing good.......

jatan, that's exactly the case. Farnsy is the closer tonight.

Mo will not pitch tohight. He pitched 2 innings Sunday, this afternoon, and they want him for tomorrow.

******, the game is at 1pm tomorrow. Gonna have to find a way to watch it during Spanish.

2 on w/1 out uh OH

Yankee killer Guillen up...don't like it

thanks rob and gonyy. but why do they want him for tomorrow? get the win today with mo pitching the last inning (thats automatic, isnt it?) and tomorow hopefully there wont even be a save situation?

Speaking of Spanish, this AP **** is killing me. I love how even though it's AP, no one in my class, including myself, can speak Spanish to save our lives. Writing is another thing, but isn't speaking the whole point?

lol andrew. So will I but during american history and and dont even mention spanish class again.

Villone behind 2-0 to Guillen

Que problema tienes con espanol, kaylee? Soy profesor de espanol.

Hasn't Villone been kind of shaky as of late? Where the **** is Myers?

Guillen, sientete!

what does that mean?

Rob, necesito ayuda con una cuenta con algunas preguntas que yo no comprendo.

Nice K for Villone.

Hmmm...bean Casey?

Casey up, 2 for 3...nice pitch by Villone, K's Guillen looking

I have a retarded spanish clas that doesnt even have a teacher so we learn nothing.

Rob. It shoul be: Guillén, siéntate.
And that means, Guillén, sit down, Kaylee

Andrew: Maybe I could help you

Okay that makes sense now!

LOL right on cue Jorge. The master.

Kaylee, I took Spanish for 5 years before this year, but my teacher last year was a ***** so I completely unlearned everything I had previously gained and now I'm back where I started.

I'm on my laptop, so I can't do the accents. sorry, Jorge.

I admit my spanish grammar has diminished greatly since college. I just haven't written much, and I teach first year spanish, so I don't have a lot of practice with a lot of the more advanced stuff.

dang Villone, from 0-2 to 3-2 come on

Well I'm reading a story called "El sombrero de tres picos" and I have to answer these questions but I don't understand what is going on haha.

Three blocked balls on dirt in a row. What's going on?

What a play by Cano. WOW.

Nice Villone.

andrew:that is about where I will be after this year.It is only my second year in spanish thank god I had a good teacher last year.

amazing play by cano/guiel!

Casey runs into another Yankee.

Not really his fault there, though. I'm just glad Guiel held onto the ball.

What did Cano do? I'm too lazy to go watch TV.

Casey trying to injure the whole Yankee team tonight...

Awesome inning, Villone. Excellent play, Robbie.

OK, NOW PEPTO TIME, Farnsy will be in..........great play Robbie.....

Hey Rob. Are you a good teacher or not? I mean student friendly or not??

No need to feel sorry, Rob. Your Spanish is very nice

Guiel really held his ground there.

Saved a run and threw out Casey who plowed Wilson getting to first.

cano dove for the ball when it was practically already in the outfield, i dont know how he got to it, and then fired it to guiel who ran into him and knocked him over.

phew! yankees never fail in giving (almost) heart-attacks! oh thats why i love them!

oops - Guiel not Wilson (tho I bet he was laughing that he wasn't in there)

**** I'm sure Lola is flipping out right now haha.

Nice job, Ronny, Guiel and Cano! Saved the game there.

What do you mean by student friendly, vik? haha

Today was our first day, which of course, is basically a waste. It was all registration stuff. I've got a couple of classes with near 50 students. rediculous. counselors look at a persons name when they are enrolling, and if the see something like guerra, or martinez, or gonzalez, or something like that the automatically throw them in Spanish class.

Hi Ashley. Surely you are very happy with previous game

shocker- proctor is warming up in the bullpen

Should be farnsy in the pen, if anybody.

hi jorge- we've missed you. you bet im happy with my man's pitching earlier today.

What the ****? 50 people in one class? The max at my school is something like 30.

Hola Jorge.
My school averages about 35 in a class.

aww DJ just missed

Thanks for missing me Ash. I've missed all my Yankee family. But I'm having extremely busy days at work. I think this really busy stretch will finish next week. Then, we will see each other much more often. )Hope so)

Clark County School District, Andrew. That's all I have to say on the subject.

The school right next to mine has about 1500 kids. We have well over 3000. Figure that one out.

lol mine's like 30 and im in college

Hola, gonyy. Hola a todos

my spanish class has 40 but with no real teacher!

If we win this game, we'll have a NINE game lead. And our magic number will be 22. GRRRRRRRRRREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rob: Student friendly like taking it easy on the homeworks, liberal evaluation etc.
I like classes with a lot of students because the teacher has a hard time catching who's responsible for the trouble in the back. lol.

Who will come to the mound next inning? Scottie or Farnsy?

Jorge:The red sox have nop chance!

Vik, don't even go there with trouble in the back. haha

Last year I had a class that was basically made up of the kids the other teachers didn't want. It wasn't fun. I could barely teach half the time.

I try to go easy on the homework, especially since I teach mostly freshman and sophomores. Basically, if you do the work in class and not mess around, you don't have to take anything home.

Agree, Kaylee. I think we will win AGAIN the AL East division

Proctor was warming.....

Yo puedo hablar espanol tambien, pero cuando yo quiero escribir un accento, la computadora no funciona. Mi padre ensena espanol en un colegio.

Very good, gonyy. BTW, what's your name? I'm not sure. Sorry

I don't think you can do accents on this comment page.

A Rod, 1st pitch swinging, fly out, unbelieveable

lol Rob. in that case, i wouldn't mind taking your class.

I don't get homework anyway haha.

Unless it's bio class. Second day and I'm already buried in bio.

Yeah.

Jorge:
Yo puedo hablar espanol tambien, pero cuando yo quiero escribir un accento, la computadora no funciona. Mi padre ensena espanol en un colegio.

Did I say that right?? hahaha

Yes, I can, Andrew. Of course, because my PC has accents. Canó, Bernabé. See?

Jorge:

Pienso que Vik no puede hablar espanol y el copia las frases de gonyy.

My dear Vikram:
You're learning Spanish very fast. Smart guy

Haha andrew i had homework in all my classes the first day.

Absolutelly agree, Andrew. And your Spanish is very nice too.

Me llamo Karl. Tengo dieciseis anos y vivo en Duluth, Minnesota.

I have a piece of paper here that tells me how to type accents n's with tildas, etc., but when I try it on this blog it sends me back to the main page for some odd reason.

That *****. Are you a freshman or a sophomore? Usually we don't get homework on the first day.

Unless it's in bio.

that was easy. see

Pienso que Vik no puede hablar espanol y el copia las frases de Andrew.

hold down alt + 130 on number pad. Should be e with accent.

alt + 160 is a with accent

alt + 161 = i with accent

alt + 162 = o with accent

alt + 163 = u with accent

hard to do with a laptop because the is no number pad.

PEPTO TIME>>>>

See my problem is I can write very well, but I can't speak it without stopping and thinking or speaking very slowly.

Sorry Karl. You've told me your name before. I promise not to forget it again. I think it is because family is growing a lot

Andrew:what does that mean ?
I am slow.

We need little profile pages so we don't forget who everybody is.

I know that's what I tried to do with mine Rob and it didn't work.

For all you people talking about homework, I have to write a 2 and 1/2 page AP English essay after the game tonight. I leave for NY tomorrow and won't be back till the day before school starts.

Eh which part.

It is very difficult to truly learn to speak without spending a lot of time in a Spanish-speaking country. I took 3 years in high school, but didn't learn to speak at all until I spent 2 years living in Chile.

2 outs left. C'mon, Scottie

Oh don't get me started on AP English. I HATED AP English in 11th grade so I went down to Honors for 12th and it's lovely.

Where did Kasey go?

I think he's at work.

Little profile pages would be nice, or even names instead of e-mails.
Having a dad who teaches Spanish allows me to instantly be the top of my class. Nice thing to have.

andrew:Okay i am a sophmore took me awhile to figure that out

é á í ó ú ñ ¿ Ñ

Works on mine, Karl. Are you using the number pad when you type the numbers?

PROCTOR, you don't walk a guy hitting .248 come ON, that was horrible

oooops. A walk. And Pudge is coming to the plate

AP 11th is what I'm in. Also in AP World History, that's about all my school offers in terms of AP.

If Pudge HR here...I will ring Proctor's neck...had 2 strikes on Inge

Hey Russ. Again???????????????

I am liking the distractions with the Spanish discussion. Means I'm not stressing out so much with the game. haha.

I love how there is a question "Donde esta la ciudad de Guadix?" yet I can't find the **** word in the entire story.

instead on using our emails we can use your_name@xyz.com to register. That way we'll have our names. Helps me a lot because I am really bad with names.

PEPTO PEPTO

Yeah I took World last year too. I got 4s on the English, Psych, and World exams last year, but either everyone failed or I got incredibly lucky because I basically skipped 2/3 of the World essays and the one I did do I completely BSed.

My High School only offered AP English and AP Calculus AB.

I got a 5 on the English AP test. My university still tried to tell me I should take Freshman English anyway.

My response? Nah.

Agree Rob. That is because we have an 8.5 games lead

Hey nów Í gét ít Rob-I was üsing the numbers above the keyboard. I get it now. Thanks.

Hey JTorre....ONE MORE OUT

********* Inge made Scottie throw a lot of pitches.

ONE MORE, SCOTTIEEEEEEEEEEEEE

Where has Paul been?

Your welcome Karl.

It was really funny watching the HR derby (last year?) when Miguel Tejada was in it. Listening to him call the ball a sack of excrement in Spanish was quite hillarious, since you know they would have been in a lot of trouble with the FCC if somebody said the same thing in English.

Let me ask this. How did Jaret look tonight? Was he strong on the mound?

¡Vamos Scotty! ¡Terminar el juego!

Jaret went the longest he has gone all year. He did really good tonight.

Well Jaret was Jaret as in he got into trouble but somehow got out. He did go into the 7th inning for the first time so I guess that meant he was being economical with his pitches.

Jaret was amazing, he got into the 7th for the first time this year. Bruney bailed him out that inning.

Hi, my pretty australian friend. A lot withouth seeing you

IF PROCTOR WALKS ANOTHER GUY...THAT IS IT...I AM JUMPING THROUGH THE TV AND RINGING HIS NECK....COME ON PROCTOR

Wright only threw 85 pitches, surprisingly, considering he got into the 7th. I'd say that was pretty good.

It seems like the last 3 innings are taking longer than the first 6.

Let's hope Jaret continues this way. Thanks to all

Oh come on.

**** PROCTOR...GEES...2 WALKS, UNEXUSEABLE, COME ON, PROCTOR LOOKS BEAT

I dont get my honors american history hgomework.they just switched me into it because i was to smart for regular american history.I missed two weeks of the class.

You called it Russ

Grr. Come on Scotty, end it now!

YOU **** PROCTOR

holy **** proctor what was that ****.

Argh!

Oh dear.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

***?

yikes.

And he get's Young on 3 pitches. Dear god.

The Curse of the Evil Hanging Slider.

Folks, I have to get back to work. Hope I can get over here tomorrow. See you all

That ******.

2 walks, unexuseable, w/2 strikes on each of the batters...needed one more strike to win and he can' throw one

¿Honron?

Voy al baño y regreso para averiguar que ya no ganan los Yankees. Que tristesa.

oye. proctor should wear a dunce cap.

Cano, Abreu, Guiel coming up. Any chance?

Hi Jorge.. how are you doing.. been busy lately, hey?

That is what life will be like when Mo retires? I'm scared.

But they still have a shot here.

dang, dang, dang, dang.....could have picked up another game on Detroit dang

That guy who looks like a ********* and who closes for Detroit is in.

There's always a chance, Andrew. Always.

Is Farnsworth hurt? Thats the only reason I can think of him not closing.

IF - and that's such a big IF - the Yankees do come back here, it will surely be the best of the year. LET'S GO YANKEES!

Very busy, Angel. I even can't see my kids all day long. When I left home, they're still sleeping. When I arrive late at night, they are sleeping already. Sad but necessary

****. We had this game guys......

andrew you mean todd jones.

Yeah him, he looks mean.

Yankees have pounded this guy in the past... Jones is not that good.... COME ON, Yankees!

Señor Proctor, tú madre es una **** fea.

OK, that was uncalled for. I'd never say that in English too him. But honestly...

Oh, well, let's go RJ tomorrow..take the series

Wow it knows spanish expletives too. Smart censor.

Really, no excuse for Proctor walking 2 in the 9th...NONE

******.

Yep, it does know spanish expletives.

yes it is and the yankees are in trouble.

******.

okay they lost.thankees proctor

Ugh well Proctor has been good for us in the past so I can't hate him too much.

that stunk

I feel bad for Jaret.. he really deserved a win.

That's it. What a wasted game. Sickening.
They're good at bouncing back from things like this. Hopefully that'll continue tomorrow.

you just don't walk a guy batting .248 to lead off the 9th...that killed proctor...then another walk..he was ahead of all the hitters excpet Monroe

Beeeeeuatiful finish- Tigers Win THEEEEEEEEEEEEEE Tigers WIN!!!!!!!!!

Yep, just a bad outing by Proctor... but no reason to forget that he's been great for us.

what, now we have to deal with Tigers trolls?

LOL, run along peckerhead.

Rizzo, the closet Red Sox fan.......Rizzo...was a good finish....the Yankees still lead your *** by 8 games, so sit down you *****

This is on Joe.
1) For putting in Scottie

2) Not removing Scottie after he had 24 pitches. I am not going to lie that I knew this was going to happen. But I sure felt like the game will be tied and Joe would bring in Farnsworth anyway.

lol talk about hypocritical rizzo....umm i don't know if u realize but try looking at the standings, we lost exactly half a game in the standings

he is a red sox fan ehat do you expect?

He's from the Sox blog. So, friend, how are the Sox these days? Sitting pretty at 9 games over .500?

Question: if Joe didn't want Mo to pitch tonight because he pitched the earlier game, why was Proctor in there?

Where was Farnsy?

I just don't understand.....

Tigers win, ahem, so you've now one 2 of 6 games against the Yankees? Okay, enjoy your (one) win, silly and ignorant Tiger fan.

Rizzo appears on the *** blog. However, after they got swept twice and no one talks over there, he has to come to our blog....

Well, I'm gonna be gone until next Tuesday since I'm going to New York. Watch for me on Sunday, lol. I might check in if I get a chance, but I doubt it.
Hasta luego, todos. Vamos Yanquis! Les veo el próximo martes.

Thats even worse if its a Red Sox fan.

Oh, he's a Red Sox fan... The team which sits snugly EIGHT big fat games behind the Yankees, and NINE in the lost column... One loser to another loser!

grow up Rizzo. We lost the second game of a DH in the 9th unlike some a certain team that got swept in a 5 game series or loses every game in the 1st 2 innings.

Disappointing, but, I can live. If they had lost the day game, too, then this loss would have been tough to swallow. As it is, the Tigers cannot win the season series. If you have a winning record against other playoff caliber teams, that usually means you're in pretty good position.

Yes it is!

Besides, Detroit has been living and dying by the long ball. We know what usually happens to teams like that if and when they reach the playoffs.

So the tigers win 2 out of 6 vs the Yankees... the 2 they win are without Rivera available... I'm still not sold on the Tigers.

Don't worry, we've been through worse. This loss was just a fluke, Randy will right the ship tomorrow.

Thats a good way of looking at it too. Its disappointing because Jaret really deserved the win, and it would have been nice to sweep the DH - but its not the end of the world.

Hey guys. Back again posting after month long off/away. Well, nothing much to say except how surprised the Red Sox have fallen, although the injuries are big part and they lost more people than Yankees, esp. Varitek. I give all my wishes to health for Ortiz--like him or not, he's a good person on/off the field.

As for the Yankees, I really think this year is best shot for No. 27. Looking around the league, the Yankees better hope those LAAOA...AOALAA w/e don't get in but Oakland looks tough. The Tigers will also be tough but I think Oakland will be the biggest obstacle. If the WC comes out of Central, which will happen, an OAK-NYY ALCS is highly possible and should be entertaining. Detroit might still surprise in the postseason but I don't see Twins or White Sox much of challenge with their pitching problems/lack of depth. After the ALCS, well, breather with JV league--Mets can't beat any AL team, they got no pitching or little at all.

So yea, good stuff here. Tough loss tonight but same lesson as always: A home run can only hurt a pitcher, a walk can kill one. Alrite, good luck all ya merry New York folks.

Glad to get a reaction out of the Yankee fans, hey i know Boston's out of it, can't i still root against the Yanks?

Whatever helps you sleep at night *****.

Its how you do it!

Tough loss guys, I'm not sure I understand why they want to use Rivera tomorrow, when there's a win for the taking today...It's not even sure there'll be a need for Mariano tomorrow, while this was almost cut out for him (bottom 9th, runners 1st and 2nd, top of the lineup) If they listed the reason they didn't want to pitch him twice a day, fine, but why no Farnsie then? Too bad that it takes away the spotlight a bit from a solid (number-wise) outing by Wright, and an MVP-like effort by the Captain to pull us level, and over the top. Other than that, let's move on to tomorrow. More games toplay, more games to win.

and Rizzo: we picke up games on redsox when
1) we played you

2) you played us

3) we played other teams

4) you played other teams

5) we were idle

6) you were idle

in other words all the time. so just shut up.

Glad to get a reaction out of the Yankee fans, hey i know Boston's out of it, can't i still root against the Yanks?

Just more evidence to support my theory that there are few or no Red S*x fans. There are only anti-Yankee fans.

Sure you can - it reflects more on you than it does on us. That shows what a sad bitter hater you are.

I don't get it. There are plenty of nice Sox fans who come here once in a while just to enjoy baseball for what it is. Then there's this idiot who comes in here to make fun of us after his team just got swept.

brockie, I think the rational for not using Rivera is more the idea of not overworking him for the rest of the season, so that he is still good for the playoffs. It's not so much to save him for tomorrow as it is to keep him fresh for the long run.

And again, I also ask the question, "where was Farnsy?" Proctor pitched in the day game. Yeah it was for 1 out, but still.

Boston playing the Orioles at Camden. Yankees not even involved. The "Yankees ****" chant breaks out. 'Nuff said about the "fans" of certain teams.

I think Detroit deserved to win the game anyway. But I feel bad for Scottie.

Well, I have to go get my beauty rest soon, so I'm out for tonight. (and believe me, I need all the beauty rest I can get.)

Hopefully I can follow the score at least for the game tomorrow.

OMG I just realized why I can't figure out these **** questions. There was a whole other page to the story that was missing!

And of course the answers are word for word.

Good going Andrew.

Whats wrong with being Anti-Yankee, if the tables were turned such as in 86, yankee fans would be all over the red sox, thus making them anti-Red Sox fans. I am pretty sure any team that is your rival , is your anti fan. Dodgers- Anti-Giant fans. At a time like this of course i am going to root against the Yankees, what else is their to do, say lets go Boston stay about 500 now

Rob, I agree with the decision not to use rivera if that is indeed the rationale. He's a huge factor in every close game, and I'd happily give up a few games in this final stretch in order to get him to come up big a few times for us in close playoff games.

You need to understand Rob. When there is nothing your team gives you to cheer abt, you atleast hate their rivals.

If Torre's logic for not using Mo is to keep him fresh for the post season, doesn't he owe the same to Proctor. I know Mo is more important. but still.

haha andrew gotta read it all.Okay i just choked on a piece of ice better stop eating it.

The reason Yankee chants break out is because they spend 250 million $, at a Royal-DRay game if someone started it that chant would be around the **** stadium in a no time

*yawn*

Its repetitive and unoriginal.

What a bore.

Dont throw the Sox payroll in my face, b/c the NYY's is undoubtedly larger than anyone elses by a longshot. An example is Melky, if there were 6 or 7 of his type, homegrown there wouldnt be as much anti-yankee sentiment. But in the postseason where will he be? Thats right riding the pine, watching Matsui (13 mill), Damon (13), and Abreu (13.6) run around the outfield, while a possible opponent like Det's entire team makes the same opponent as their outfield

Oh God here come the payroll arguments again.

*AMOUNT* as their outfield

Why does payroll matter?

Rizzo, if you using argument of payroll and equating wins or championships w/payroll, then if the Yankees don't win it every year, Boston should w/their 2nd highest payroll, right? And we all know how often Boston wins World Series..one in last 86 years....Boston just stinks..and don't use injuries as an excuse. We have had just as many w/Sheff, Matsui, Moose, Cano, Pavano, Posada all missing games this year.....

Either way, you guys can converse with each other and throw me under the bus, I kind of expect it from Yankee fans, but hey its how you guys are, i am out for the night.

i agree Russ

but was you captain out a month?

Here's what a group of people analyzed the division champs and playoffs to be (some really avid baseball followers and very knowledged bout the game):

AL:

EAST: Yankees by 6 games

CENTRAL: Tigers by 3 games

WEST: Oakland by 3 games

WC: White Sox by 1 game

NL:

EAST: Mets by 12 games

CENTRAL: Cardinals by 3 games

WEST: Dodgers by 2 games

WC: Astros by 1 game

ALDS: Yankees over White Sox in 4

ALDS: A's over Tigers in 5

NLDS: Dodgers over Cardinals in 4

NLDS: Astros over Mets in 5

ALCS: Yankees over A's in 7

NLCS: Dodgers over Astros in 6

WS: Yankees over Dodgers in 6

Let the debate go on.

Whee I am done with Spanish.

you won't be able to compare the relative merits of Matsui/Sheffield vs. Varitek rizzo. Two different worlds. Bats vs "intangibles" I guess.

Thomas,
The yankees over the white sox in 4 that would be nice!

Captain? Ferrytek isn't a captain. Was the red sox missing about 70 HR's and 250 RIBI's out of their line up?

Rizzo, go worry about your team who stinks.......

thanks Russ, I was missing the projected numbers there. It's stupid to go to a "no, we're more injured than you" frenzy in my opinion btw.

ANdrew see it was easy after you read the whole book.i should go try to do my honors american history and honors english.i am a week behin cuz they thought i was too smart for the class i was in.

You can't possibly be comparing Varitek, Nixon, Gonzalez, etc to Sheffield (30 HR, 120 RBI), Matsui (20 HR, 110 RBI), and Cano (15 HR, 80 RBI). And you weren't able to knock us down and stomp on us while we were reeling from the injuries.

I didn't pick the odds etc. Most seem agreeable and well-picked. But then again, anything can happen. This year, it does seem there is no "super-good team" in baseball (mets are not) so it really will be the hottest team down the stretch will win.

I think we are the team to beat in a 3 game series, assuming Minnesota doesn't make it and Chicago can't get their heads out of their *****. I'm not sold on Detroit in the postseason at all although they have the pitching potential for it. With Wang, Randy, and Mussina I think we can hold up pretty well as long as our offense can keep us afloat.

Losing Varitek is a lot for the Red Sox. It's not his bat, it's the pitch calling and handling pitchers. Believe me, if the Yankees lost Posada for a long while (not for few days like it did this year, but month long), the race will be a lot tighter. The catcher is the soul of the baseball team, for any team.

Well, I went out for a while. It would have been nice to win the second game, and we were what, one strike away? But that is one of those you can blame on the big lead. Had the lead been 2 or 3, then Mo would be in there in the 9th inning. Had the lead been 2 or 3, you probably don't see Bruney. So Mo gets a night off...hopefully it pays off in October. You use Bruney and see what you have in him. No problem. Magic # still 23. An 8 game lead (9 in loss column).

Nice job from Wright tonight. He actually saw the 7th inning. Let's just hope for a good outing from Randy tomorrow.

Good point here. The Sox were about in full force when the yanks had injuries, 12-game winning streak at one point, and yet they failed to make the yankees pay for it. We held on knowing that these injuries wouldn't last forever (knock on wood, Carl Pavano), and that's been our merit. We held on while we were ailing and the Red Sox seemed to be cruising. If the Yanks would've handled it like the Sox are doing now, they would've trailed by 10 games before July started.

In a 3 game series, Yankees look like the team to beat. Twins have Santana but nobody else. Detroit, well like you said, I am not sold. It's Kenny Rogers and four young dwarfs (not seven). Chicago is a mess really. A's might be a threat with Zito, Haren maybe, Saarlos?, Harden etc. Yankees look like team to beat in AL, but it depends on Mussina/Johnson/Wang, who can be good or bad. Moose is usually solid in postseason, Johnson never was except when Schilling was with him, and Wang is still new there. So, it's still up for grabs.

As for NL (if anyone cares), if Houston gets in, a big IF, that's the rotation to beat still. But only within NL, of course.

I will be very surprised if a AAAA team gives an AL team trouble this year in the World Series, no matter who it is.

Wang goes in 1 and 5. Lidle in 4. The ?? is who you want in 2 and who you want in 4. The Yanks will have home field in round 1 (don't know about round 2).

As for me, I set it up Wang-Johnson-Mussina-Lidle-Wang. Games 1, 2 and 5 at home. Wang's home record is incredible.

Don't count FLA out. 54-35 in last 89? I'd love to see them make it. Go Girardi.

must go attempt my honors english and honors american history homework.I dont think my teacher will except excuses especially watching a yankees game my history teacher is a real anti yankees fan"or what they call red sox fan".

Sorry, I meant who you want in 2 and 3. I want Randy in 2 at home and Muss in 3 on the road. I think it would work out better that way.

As for the WS, I would be surprised if any NL team other than the Mets wins more than one game vs. whoever the AL throws at them.

We'll figure it out when we get there. Let's win this **** game tomorrow first.

Losing Varitek = losing Posada

is because there is a serious lack of quality in catching depth throughout baseball.

I agree andrew lets win game by game playoffs are not for a month.

The sox are crowing abt injuries. But the only people injured during the sweep was Varitek, Nixon and Clement. Now that they realize they are out of it, even the half injuries are sitting out. People forget that they were bad even with everybody playing.

If I were Joe Torre, I'd set up rotation as follows:

1 (home) Mussina

2 (home) Wang

3 (away) Johnson

4 (away) Wright/Lidle

5 (home) Mussina with Wang/Johnson in relief

It's best to look at the pitchers' postseason history for this. Mussina has always been a good Game 1 starter, and he sets the table (need to see how he does back from DL). Wang is best at home and since he's still a soph, best not to give him Game 1 spotlight. Johnson has never pitched well in playoffs except 2001, when Schilling started Game 1 in NLDS and WS. So he should be more middle role, and for long relief in game 5 since he did well in that. Moose usually doesn't do so well second time through a series, but that's best I can think of.

I called it--the NL team will win at least ONE game this year, for respect. If any NL team even wants to come close to winning, they would need super good pitching (mets don't have, only houston and dodgers come close), a sure-fire closer (seems no contending in NL really), at least capable offensive power (mets, dodgers maybe, cards maybe), a smart manager (graddy little...no way) and the ALCS going 6+ or 7. tough luck, seniors.

Hey guys,
just got back in from the game. It was a fun game and i had a great time for the first 8 and 2/3 innings of the game. Ha ha, we all know what happened afterwards.

But guess what, we are still leading 8 games! so its ok. you win some, you lose some. its baseball.

Will post pictures on the site tommorow. gotta get some rest. *yawn*

Night!

i can not believe torre let proctor pitch the 9th. if you're going to protect mo, you sure as **** better protect the guys who hand him the ball. that's just a ludicrous decision. i don't care that farnsworth was unavailable. the way villone was dealing in the 8th, let him go out there for another inning and see what he can do. if you're of the mind that you're going to live with a loss (and, by not using farnsworth or mo, torre obviously was), then why not protect proctor and live with villone blowing a save. that's an all time joe torre classic right there, folks. THAT'S why people question his intelligence dispite four world series rings.

oh, by the way, the offense putting together three hits didn't really help the cause.

that was abysmal.

and i don't care that boston's eight back right now. if the yankees keep playing this way, they won't be eight back for long. they haven't played a decent game since the fenway series, and they hadn't played a decent game in the four weeks prior to the fenway series. but, because boston's had a string of terrible luck with injuries, they're eight games up. the yankees earned five of those games in boston. the rest were gifts from the red sox.

in the above, four weeks = two weeks. typo.

unlike ian browne, i don't think the red sox are capable of going 25-5 the rest of the way, barring a complete miracle.

luckily for them, the yankees don't look capable of playing too many games above .500 the rest of the way. good lord.

randy's about due to get absolutely hammered. so that ought to be fun to watch tomorrow.

Commenting on Thomas' post Mussina in career playoffs when he was the Game 1 starter is 3-4 with a 3.86 ERA and when he makes his second apperance in the series he is actually better with the lone exception being last yrs playoffs..he has gone 1-2 with 3 ND and a 3.07 ERA the second time around

Kasey has a point, ignoring the BoSox series, the Yanks haven't won a series yet since losing to the WhiteSox, losing 2 out of three to the WSox, O's, Angels, Mariners and splitting the four game set against the Angels. This is very disconcerting. Hopefully the Yanks can break that trend tomorrow... er today.

I'm of the mind that RJ has finally settled down and is into pitching decent (stellar is no longer in his vocabulary or his ability for that matter), but if he can have a "quality start", we should be able to pull off a win.

And that means better at-bats people!!

RJ (4.96 ERA) up against J Bonderman (3.92 ERA) - this game is going to be difficult - but again, if RJ can be a decent RJ, then I think the Yankees can win.

I agree with Kasey's post about game 2. Obviously, the Yanks are going to win the East, not because they're playing great ball, but because Sox are deceased. I also have no problem with resting Mo for game 2. But, game 2 loss squarely on Proctor AND Torre. Proctor has ZERO saves in his career. He showed why-WALK, WALK! While he's melting down approaching 30 pitches, why wouldn't Clueless Joe warm up Dotel, who has a history of saves? Makes absolutely no sense. The Tigers have had the best record in baseball since Day 1, and will continue. Last night's win will do wonders for their psyche!

I understand everyone's expectations that this $200 million dollar payroll should be hammering out 10 homers a game and scoring 20 runs, I have those expectations too everynight, but then I always remember good pitching always bests good hitting, and I think the Yankees have gotten away from the form they had against Boston by grinding out at bats and taking a pitch and getting the starter out by the 5th every day. They didn't do that the past few games and are not winning because of it.

Go figure.. the yankees lost and Gene shows up. Are some people attracted to losing or what? And what does that make them by association?

Gee Kasey, could you be a little more pessimistic in your predictions?

by the way - it was about why Mo was unavailable last night.

Also, no one has mentioned (probably because it's moot), that had Proctor gotten that last out, guess who would have had the "shouldabeen" game winning rbi?

Everyone's favorite hitter - AROD!

And for those folks who were mentioning that Proctor has no saves in his career, the fact that last night was the FIRST save opportunity of his career probably has something to do with that.

come on Mark. Why not use Farnsie? I like Torre. But he is ruining Scottie's career. How much more can he absorb.

Farsworth's back tightened up last night. That is very disconcerting.

Mark,

On ESPN last night they announced that Proctor was 0-7 for saves in his carrer.

Proctor looked good closing but made a few mistakes, especially his sinker against Monroe. Proctor said it was a good pitch but it appeared to me to hang. It looked like he didn't take enough off it, serving it up to Monroe. All it takes is one mistake.

Wang is 10-2 at the Stadium this year, which goes a long way to explaining why I want him going in Games 1 and 5 of the ALDS.

Family in from California for 10 days. Be on and off of here as I have to spend time with my adorable nephew!

Pete-
I don't know Proctor's numbers, but ESPN isn't always right. I've noticed quite a few mistakes from them this season.

Farnsworth couldn't pitch last night, you think Torre wouldn't have used him if he could have pitched?

If Torre, doesn't do something that is "expected" then there is usually a reason for it - like last night.

Well I looked it up, and in the Yankees stats, Proctor has had 7 save opportunities, and 0 saves.

Although, I don't know if this definitely excludes all but save opportunites when closing. Could that stat include lost games in long relief?

I guess a better way to have put it would have been Proctor has had no opportunities for a save as a closer.

btw nyyangel, the yanks were losing for a while, 5 of 8 by my count, probably 6 of 9 after today. It's not that they lost last night, it's how. Torre allowing Proctor to screw up & throw almost 30 pitches, when Dotel should have been brought in at least for Monroe

Why not Myers Vs. the lefty, Granderson. That would have been a good fit, but Proctor would not have had the Save opportunity.

They've had worse losses this year than last night. Good God.

When you have something interesting to contribute, let me know.

After reading many of the posts on this site, I can't understand how the Yankees could have won so many games over the past ten years. As a Yankee fan I have enjoyed their playing for many, many years. I have been reading this comment site for about a month now, and am amazed. I have never encountered so many people who invest so much time, as well as other people's, in bashing a team they supposedly root for. I don't mind second guessing, in fact I do that myself, but ***? If the bloggers on this site are representative of the fan population these days, I'll keep my distance.

From what I understand, save opportunities don't just mean those obtained in the 9th inning.

Save opportunities. When a pitcher 1) enters the game with a lead of three or fewer runs and pitches at least one inning, 2) enters the game with the potential tying run on base, at bat, or on deck, or 3) pitches three or more innings with a lead and is credited with a save by the official scorer

From the official score book.

Saves:

Rule 10.20 in the Official Rule Book states:

Credit a pitcher with a save when he meets all three of the following conditions:

(1) He is the finishing pitcher in a game won by his club; and

(2) He is not the winning pitcher; and

(3) He qualifies under one of the following conditions:

- (a) He enters the game with a lead of no more than three runs and pitches for at least one inning; or

- (b) He enters the game, regardless of the count, with the potential tying run either on base, or at bat, or on deck (that is, the potential tying run is either already on base or is one of the first two batsmen he faces; or

- (c) He pitches effectively for at least three innings. No more than one save may be credited in each game.

Oh please. Keep your distance then! Don't judge us all by the few. I resent generalizations like that.

Sorry, I didn't mean to generalize. But have you seen the amount of type spent on bashing the yankees by Kasey, Sam, Gene, and others over the past week? Mainly by Kasey of course. And then the resulting squabbling, which is a waste of everyone else's time. Hopefully this comment site has an injection of bloggers who don't do that. If not I won't waste my tme reading it anymore. There have already been several contributors bail as I have noticed.

Could be worse...
Jeter could be out.

Melky could have a phantom knee injury keeping him from playing.

Giambi could have a steroid related irregular heartbeat.

meaning, we could be red S U X fans.

Seriously though. With the year of baseball that Ortiz has had (from last August to now) he has put up some of the most ridiculous power numbers EVER during a strech like that.

Suddenly he develops a common side effect of steroids ("high blood pressure that can damage the heart or blood vessels over time") I looked it up.

So why isn't there any talk or speculation about Ortiz being on steroids? It's the 1st thing that jumped into my mind.

Giambi got bashed with his steroid related illness, so why not Ortiz??

And those are just a few of the people who post on here. Kasey is Kasey - thats just the way he is, you dont have to like it or agree with it (if you've been reading you'll see that most don't), but he is a part of this comments section - and most people dont wish to see him leave. You can choose to ignore him, after all. The other two I wont bother addressing, I find them as annoying as everyone else does and wish they wouldnt' post here - they bring nothing to this comments section and I would not miss them.

Thats how media works Ralphie. Ortiz, Favre, Lebron and Manning could do nothing wrong.

Woah, woah...don't you go bad mouthing my boy Peyton.

Your boy threw the whole O-line under the bus. If the colts win its Peyton and if they lose its the O-line. What a loser.

Blown saves don't always result in losses. On the same note, blown saves don't always occur in the 9th inning. It can occur in the 7th or 8th.

ESPN just likes to make things sound worse than they really are, especially when the Yankees are involved.

Besides, I agree 100% about this whole lack of speculation as to Papi's current condition. I'm not accusing him of anything, but there's a few variables that the sports writers aren't even daring to address. And why? Because Papi is a "nice guy."

Anyone know why Giambi isn't playing today?

My guess is it has something to do with his MRI yesterday for his sore wrist. But Mark can vouch or kabosh that theory... Mark?

Giambi's not playing because he strained his left leg break dancing and popping on 8th street.

Here's a NY Times article on it I posted earlier:

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/08/31/sports/31pins.html

That was a heartbreaker last night, but I still think Proctor is one of the best releivers in the game. I'm glad we kept him all season, and he's proven that he can be a mainstay for the coming years.

I forgets the NY Times requires registration - so for those of you who don't wanna - here's an excerpt:

"Giambi had an M.R.I. on his left wrist between games of the doubleheader, after he went 1 for 3 with a sacrifice fly as the designated hitter in the opener. He missed a start Sunday in Anaheim because of cramping in his hands, and he has had his wrist wrapped lately.

The results of Giambi’s M.R.I. were not immediately available, and he started the second game as the D.H."

Only if Proctor's arm doesn't fall off after this season. He needs some help badly. Dotel better get up to speed and fast or else Proctor is going to have to start pitching with his nostrils.

Am I getting senile - wasn't the Gameday collapsable once? Into this thin little window?

Thanks for info people!! Let's go RJ!! Come on Yanks...GAMETIME

"The Yankees came clean on Mariano Rivera, admitting that his elbow has been bothering him after some appearances. This is kind of frustrating as a beat writer. Rivera has had more than the usual amount of ice and heat treatments for about two weeks now. But every time one of us has asked Joe Torre or Rivera about it, they have said everything was fine."

Pete ... yes, Proctor technically has seven blown saves, but the first six were games in which he surrendered the lead in the 7th or 8th innings. Relievers are credited with blown saves in those cases, because technically, they could have received a save had they finished the game. Of course, Proctor wouldn't have finished any of those games, so in most people's eyes, they don't count as "save opportunities" for him. This was the first true save opportunity of his career.

so, giambi may be injured. rivera may be injured. if the yankees lose today, they'll have won only ONE of their last seven series.

luckily, the red sox have been absolutely awful. they can't count on the red sox being absolutely awful for the next month. they need to start playing better baseball, and fast.

What is with all these injuries? Didn't even know Giambi was injured. Also, no Damon in center today. I assume Farnsy can pitch today....a MASH unit we have...

Well, good start, lets see what comes of it....

first and third, nobody out becomes first and third, one out. no run scores.

here they go again.

that was almost a home run by Abreu. abt a foot outside foul pole. Dang.

Pitching around Posada to get to A Rod...how many times have we said "to get to A Rod" last 40 at bats.....A Rod up w/bases loaded...now, here we go Kasey

a-rod's in a position to do what he does best this season. not score the runner.

strike out, pop up, or DP. pick one.

Was it an IBB to Posada or careful pitching?

A Rod is really, really, doing bad....

pop up. the correct answer was pop up.

pathetic.

gees A Rod and Abreu this inning

another wasted opportunity by the yankees. how many times have we said that the last three weeks?

man, people, this is very pathetic....can't even get a run, 1st and 3rd...this team better get it together...horrible

another pathetic inning.

this team makes me absolutely sick.

Said it way too many times in two weeks Kasey...lucky...man oh man...what can you say?

Well I think I need a break from this place.. for goodness sake.

Pinstripes..it was an unintentional intentional walk to Posada....our offense has completely gone south...we are so lucky Boston has stunk...1-0 gopher ball to Maglio...nice pitch RJ

and what a surprise. the yankees fail and the tigers score.

i absolutely can not stand watching this team play. i'll catch you all later.

Hi everyone... I've missed you all. Let me tell you about the adventure I have had for the past two days. I received tickets to tuesday's game and I was going to meet my friend who lives in brooklyn at the stadium, so I trekked via train and subway to 161 and River, only to find out when I got off the subway that the game was postponed. I had to wait for my friend, so I went to Stan's across the street, made some new friends and threw back some cold ones until she arrived. We then headed back to Brooklyn later that night (after closing down Stan's), and stayed there that night. I woke up early the next day, took a few dance classes in the city and then headed back up to the stadium where I met a different friend for the make-up day game. The stadium was so empty, it made me sad. It was a great game though. I then headed back to Manhattan and met up with a friend working in the Celebrity Suite for the VMAs where I got a bag of freebies they were giving out to the celebs (yes, I am a rockstar), had a few drinks and then headed home in time to watch the Yankees (almost) win the 2nd game. It was a great two days!

This past week, it is hard to watch.....

Mark, did you put your Giant hex on this team?

This might sound a little crazy, but I wonder if the team is struggling right now because they have such a big lead. It might be like a closer coming in in a non-save situation.

It's the Kasey and Sam show! I anybody else out there? I never realized that a 1-0 game in the second was a done deal.

Giant hex? In case you haven't noticed, the Giants have won 11 of their last 16

Not a done deal. Just getting frustrating to watch at times. Haven't noticed, don't follow Giants. Kasey is gone...just me till 2:30...have to go get kid from school

At least Kasey's gone. That's good.

This is a GAME of failure. If you lose 40% of your games, guess what? You have a .600 winning pct., wind up 97-65, and most likely are in the playoffs.

Same with making out 7 out of 10 times. It means you are a .300 hitter.

But some would dwell more on the negative than the positive.

Well, good news is, we don't face Santana from Minn, I think he pitches today

LOL, geez, calm down guys! U guys have me ****!
It sounds like u all are about to go jump off a bridge or something.

Jokes aside, i know they havent been playing phenomenal baseball as of late, but they have been playing well enough to have a 8 game lead, and to have a VERY strong chance of making it into the post season.

Maybe, they are saving the intensity and energy for the post season.

Its not like this team doesnt have the ability to- play well, we've watched them all year and know they can.

But 162 games a year, your body is not made of wood...you are bound to get tired at some point.

I'm just glad they are tired with an 8 run lead. Although i'd rather then win every game, but i know it isnt possible.

Your right...I don't have a bridge close by LOL

Mark, is there anything that can be done with the comment spam business?
i guess its an mblogs issue, i dunno.

But its becoming incredibly frustrating and ******* out all the fun to have to get that message and chop up comments line by line all the time. :-/

Since tomorrow is Sept. 1st, here is hoping that Mark can give us an update on who may be coming up soon now that rosters can be expanded.

A Rod up again w/runner in scoring position.....A Rod w/bloop single....A ROd LOL GO AROD LOL

YES RBI FOR AROD!

Thats my boy!!! Alexander Emmanuel! Woohoo :-D

YES ARod! Way to make things happen stealing 2nd like that... show the world the kind of player you are...

Arod turning the corner~!

and he steals second and i spazz out, AROD for MVP :-D

Torre said that they would be bringing up a catcher (my guess is Ben Davis) and two pitchers (i'd guess Beam and maybe Veras?) tomorrow. Phillips is back Saturday and they will likely add a starter for Sunday's game.

Cano swings at 3-0 count...UGH

Finally a break for ARod. Better be lucky than good I guess.

No chance it's Hughes ?

Catch you all later, have to get my kid...have good aft...

Well, at least Bonderman is up to 50+ pitches - so if the Yanks can keep it up - he should hopefully be gone by the 5th.

I hate gamecasting at work. I miss all of the good stuff when I have to hide the big basball diamond on my screen.

pinstripes: Follow it on gamecenter@sportsline.com. It will open in the browser without a popup. And if you are using firefox or some other tabbed browser open another tab and you dont have to worry abt any of it.

No chance at Hughes. Here are some Hughes stats....

Hughes (10-3) has allowed fewer than two runs in each of his last seven outings, posting a 0.79 ERA during that span.

Trenton 10-3, 2.25

Tampa 2-3, 1.80

Combined 12-6 2.10???

why do they have to do everything with two outs??? Can't they rally with no outs?!?!? C'MON ABREU!

I think they just like giving us fans a lot of heart attacks.

Thanks. It's not really a technical issue, though. It's more that I should be doing something work-related rather than watching a baseball game, especially when there are other people around.

and now a double for A-Rod! good for him!

Hi guys, I just got home. Looks like A-Rod drove in a run today and he has another hit as well. Good for him.

Question: where did Giambi go?

definitely turned the corner

okay AROD 2 for 2 KEEP IT UP PLEASE@!

Isn't it interesting that the Yanks have played better now that the ninnies of negativity are off the blog?

Let's bring him home guys.

marksman - giambi had an MRI today for a sore left wrist. I'm thinking he's being rested.

see...all it takes is one good hit...or a break to give someone confidence. All it takes is seeing people cheer for you again. The game is all psychological...

I do have to say, Yankee fans impressed me a little by not booing him yesterday.

Off course, i was his most vocal supporter in the stadium (i havent been to one game this year without getting into a fight or intense argument about ARod), LOL.

Nice hit Bern!

As Yogi said, 80% of the game is half mental.

D'OH - Guiel...

Gotta love Yogi.

Bonderman has thrown 90 pitches.

I'm happy Bernie got that hit!

How has RJ looked?

Love how the Sox fans think they were "good" during the first half. Maybe they should try taking off that 16-2 mark against the NL they got.

The HR Randy gave up was the only hit he has given up.

until this HR.

The same exact pitch he made to Ordonez. Jorge dont call that pitch again.

WOW. What a throw by Jeter.

darn it RJ! you need to stop your Beckett impression

The long ball has hurt RJ a lot this year.

that ball got Jorge. But looks like he is ok.

If you guys haven't noticed already. Every single yankee starter has a sub 5 era. Including Wright.

I'm not surprised, Wright hasn't really been bad, he just hasn't pitched very deep into games.

...and RJ has the highest ERA among the starters.

Is anything happening? Gamecast is still in the middle of the 6th.

For anybody that may be interested, Sam Borden is having a contest for September to win a Yankees World Series DVD collection. You just have to predict the number of wins the Yanks will have in September. Go to his blog and enter there.

pitcher change

Good start to the inning!
