For the Birds

Greetings from Crab Cake Land.

Not a pretty night for the Yankees, who saw Cory Lidle get smoked for six runs in 1 2/3 innings in a 9-4 loss. Lidle has been a bit of a roller coaster for the Yankees, throwing great games every other time out and getting rocked in the others.

If this guy could ever find some consistency, he would bOriolese a solid No. 4 starter. As it is, he opened the door once again for Jaret Wright (of Jeff Karstens?) to sneak in as the Game 4 starter come October. Should be interesting to watch down the stretch.

I know people are wondering how a team with a record like Baltimore’s can manhandle the Yankees, but that’s baseball. Erik Bedard may have only been 12-9, but he has a good ERA and is one of the better young left-handers in the league. To watch him throw six strong innings against the Yanks was not a surprise.

The Yankees have some issues to deal with in the next three weeks, and believe it or not, closing out the AL East is not one of them. The Red Sox are doing their part to make sure that the Yankees will have a spot in the postseason, so the Yankees need to get their own house in order, starting with the following three things:

1) Mariano Rivera’s forearm strain. Rivera needs to get as much rest as he can to make sure his muscle strain is ancient history. If Rivera is still hurt in October, the Yankees are going to have a tough time going anywhere.

They realistically have two more weeks to give Rivera, who will need to pitch just two or three times as a tune-up for the playoffs.

2) Jason Giambi’s wrist. There is no doubt that Giambi has been the Yankees’ best power hitter this season, coming through with a big home run in key situations on several occasions.

Giambi’s wrist hasn’t gotten back to full strength, and if that means he needs 7-10 days off to feel 100 percent, the Yankees need to do just that.

3) Mike Mussina’s shoulder. This was a new development on Friday, as the Yanks pushed Mussina’s start back from Sunday to Tuesday, giving him a couple extra days to get over a "cranky" shoulder. Words like "cranky" always make me uncomfortable, because no one knows exactly what that means.

Mussina insists he’s OK, and that it was simply a matter of going from 15 days off to 86 pitches in the matter of one day. I think his next start — not the results, but how he recovers from it — will tell a lot more of this story.

Once Matsui gets back in the lineup it’ll be esy to rest Giambi. Keep guiel or wilson at 1st and sit Giambi for while.

  2. hhayner@comcast.net

lidle for the yankees is a bum! he’s not yankee material. the yanks got the batting, infield and outfield, but not enough good pitching to be consistent.

  3. swolansky@mail.colgate.edu

I just don’t understand why they played an ailing Giambi last night against a lefty instead of Bernie Williams. Seems to me like Torre pretty much did himself in with that decision alone.

When is Karstens going to come back to the rotation? I think that’s the question on everybody’s mind right now.

  4. autreyj531@strose.edu

Hey Mark, just wanted to say that was a great article that is the lead story on the Yankees homepage right now about 9/11. Just like Torre said, it seems as though it was so long ago, but yet the reality of it all and rememberence of it makes it seem like 10 minutes ago.

  5. hc97@hotmail.com

Yes. Kudos to Mark for that piece of article. Its been 5 years yet it left a distinct memory in all.

The article reminds us how in the season our focus is mainly on baseball, yet on Monday it’ll force us to remember the bigger things in the world outside of baseball, and the greatest irony of it is how baseball could play such important role in our everyday lives…as I quote “Its a distraction”, a nice one to have….

Though I’m not even a new yorker, haven’t came across a sporting article that costs me tears in a long time….and here I salute all new yorkers from the west coast….

  6. rob.bush@excite.com

I woke up this morning, went to the Yankee homepage, looked at the standings, and was pleasantly surprised to see the Yanks still up 9 games. Yeah KC for coming back and winning that game!

It’s possible, depending on what Matsui and Sheffield do in the next couple of weeks, that if Giambi’s wrist doesn’t get any better he won’t see the post season. I know, however, that we all hope he gets the rest and his wrist heals up. You want to see the guys who have been there all year on the post season roster.

  7. yankee_indian@xyz.com

Forget the sox and the royals. We are tied with Detroit in the loss column. We need to take a serious look at that?

  8. paul1040@aol.com

There is much more to the Detroit story than we know, I think.

Once with a seemingly insurmountable lead, now the Twins and White Sox may overtake them and the Tigers may miss the playoffs.

In a move not completely clear, yet related, Dmitri Young was released outright, not even designated for assignment. That was right after a game in which he batted third and was lifted for a pinch hitter to bunt. Then released.

I cannot remember why I do not like him. Maybe it was some anti-Yankee trash talking a few years back but I have had the impression he was a cancer in the clubhouse.

All the Detroit front office will say is it was performance related. So that means it was personality clashes.

  9. paul1040@aol.com

Also the Boston Red Sox released Javy Lopez, also not designated, just released.

Interesting that just 2 years or so ago people were arguing he was the best catcher in baseball, though I was not on that bandwagon.

His performance in Boston was not that good. I wonder if he will hook on with another club, not just this year, but anywhere. His reputation has been tarnished by his unhappiness in Baltimore and the Boston performance.

  10. marksman@ny-yankees.net

Who cares, he made the mistake of boarding that sinking ship, he should pay the consequences.

Anyways, I’m off to Baltimore right now. See you all later and let’s hope for a good outing frmo Wang and more than 1 run off Loewen.

  11. rob.bush@excite.com

    I just noticed:

When (being optimistic) the Yankees beat Baltimore today, the Orioles will be officially eliminated from the division race. Their E # is at 2.

  12. swolansky@mail.colgate.edu

Dmitri Young took time off during the seasons for personal reasons: he was in rehab for alcoholism. My guess is that he began drinking again, so the Tigers had no other option than to release him, especially since there wasn’t any room on the team for him (Marcus Thames made him extraneous). I kind of feel bad for the guy.

  13. Mark

Yankees going with the B Team today….

    Damon DH

    Cabrera LF

    Jeter SS

    Posada C

    Williams CF

    Cano 2B

    Wilson 1B

    Thompson RF

    Green 3B

A-Rod has a stomach bug, Abreu is just getting a day off after a bad night against a lefty on Friday and Giambi is sitting with a bad wrist.

  14. swolansky@mail.colgate.edu

There’s no reason why this lineup shouldn’t beat the Orioles, Adam Loewen or not. We’re better off benching those lefties. It’s a shame A-Rod is out though.

  15. rob.bush@excite.com

Let’s just hope God’s defense isn’t as shaky as it was when he replaced A-Rod a couple of games ago.

  16. ataustin@aol.com

I really like most of the “new” Yankees, but there’s still something about seeing Jeter, Posada, and Williams together in the line-up…

  17. super_brockie@hotmail.com

    Yay bernie, nice leadoff single.
Nice to see the captain’s hitting streak rolling along btw, I really hope he can catch Mauer

  18. ataustin@aol.com

Bernie does it again. In all the talk about next year, no one seems to mention Bernie. I’d like to see him back. He seems to have a lot of hitting left in him.

  19. ataustin@aol.com

    Top 2ND B:2 S:2 O:1
Robinson Cano grounds into double play, second baseman Brian Roberts to first baseman Kevin Millar to shortstop Miguel Tejada. Bernie Williams out at 2nd. Robinson Cano to 1st.

    ?????????

  20. rob.bush@excite.com

Vik, I’m not sure he’s ready to retire, and there doesn’t appear to be much room for him in the outfield.

  21. yankee_indian@xyz.com

thats better. This is what espn gamecast has.

R Cano grounded out to, B Williams out at second, R Cano to first.

    And they show 2 outs.

  22. rob.bush@excite.com

I don’t think any of us can, Vik. I would just hope he goes to the NL or something.

Passed ball by Posada. Good grief. But, is it just me, or is Wang having trouble locating the K zone today? 12 strikes, 9 balls.

  23. ataustin@aol.com

Joe has a history of keeping a veteran bat on the bench for part-time DH’ing and pinch-hitting. Especially a switch-hitter. Ruben Sierra, Darryl Strawberry, David Justice, even Jose Canseco. I’d like to see Bernie stay one more year in that capacity.

  24. yankee_indian@xyz.com

What will he be paid Rob? 2 M at the most. right? I’d rather that he retire a yankee than play somewhere else for so little money. And, yankees are the only team that can DH him.

  25. ataustin@aol.com

I don’t think any team would sign him as an every day player. Really the only other place I could see him going would Florida (if Girardi is still there) as a cheap backup and mentor to young outfielders. It’s also closer to Bernie’s home.

  26. rob.bush@excite.com

Vik, I am with you on Bernie staying a Yankee. I don’t want to see him leave. But, is he really happy with a reduced role? I think he has been okay with it, but he has made a few comments in interviews which make me wonder if he will take a chance to play everyday if somebody else offers it to him.

  27. yankee_indian@xyz.com

I got the same feeling too, from his interviews. But, like Andy said, who would sign him to be an everyday player?

  28. paul1040@aol.com

There is a joke there somewhere but I am not going to touch it.

I tell you Loewen is so frustrating. He is a different pitcher facing the Yankees.

  29. paul1040@aol.com

I am stuck with GameDay and I have 10% of the radio broadcast, mostly static.

The Providence station which sometimes carries it has a Notre Dame game instead.

  30. yankeevmm@yahoo.com

i’m here but not at the computer, and i am watching the actual game, i hate adam loewan and i have never seen a balk move to 1st in my life like this guys….his pickoff move is a legit balk, not borderline like pettite, it is simply a balk, i hate everything about him

  31. rob.bush@excite.com

It will have to come later Vik.

How come gameday is never messed up when you see that “In play, out(s) recorded” message?

  32. ataustin@aol.com

The only consolation to Bernie going somewhere and getting more playing time, would be if he could get enough AB’s to get his career number high enough to satisfy the HOF voters. Not likely, but a couple of decent full seasons could get him close enough to get some consideration.

  33. rob.bush@excite.com

Thanks for the info, Vince. I just saw that “injury delay” message up for a brief moment. Didn’t last long, but it scared me a bit.

  34. rob.bush@excite.com

Angel, you are definitely welcome if you are watching the game and can give us insights that us gamedayers don’t have.

  35. Lola

Woo hoooooooooooo Rutgers game was awesome. OMG, my aklma mater totally kicked *** :-D!!!! R-U Rah rah, RU Rah rah, Uu rah, u rah, rutgers rah, upstream red team, red team upstream rah rah rutgers rah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😀

  36. rob.bush@excite.com

Angel, has Wang looked solid so far? My gameday impression was that he struggled with the K zone a little in the 2nd inning. Is that accurate, or has he been fine?

  37. nyyangel74@yahoo.com

Wang has looked really solid so far. Some of the strike calls have been a little inconsistent, but not enough to hurt him.

  38. rob.bush@excite.com

Btw, Hi Lola. Good afternoon to you.

What’s up with your man being sick again? Did you give him a bad Turkey dinner or something?

  39. Lola

I dont know…lol…its Rutgers homecoming today, so i am only just checking gameday now…i see he’s not in the line up =( is he ok? We areleading though!!!!!!!!!

  40. rob.bush@excite.com

    (where are my manners, lol)

    Posted by: Lola | September 9, 2006 06:13 PM

Don’t worry about it. We took long enough to say “hi” to you.

According to Mark (I think he’s the one that posted it) A-Rod is out with a stomach bug today.

  41. ataustin@aol.com

    Pitch 1 – Ball
    Pitch 2 – Pickoff Attempt 1B

    Pitch 3 – Ball

Pitch 4 – In play, no out recorded

Miguel Tejada lines out to center fielder Bernie Williams.

Is it just me, or this happening more and more with Gameday? Maybe they’re using interns….

  42. ataustin@aol.com

Wang’s been doing really well with men on base today. Usually, pitching from the stretch has been his weak point.

  43. Lola

LOL, he does that a lot. I guess i have that effect on him. I should be around more often, i love when he shows off!! 😀

  44. rob.bush@excite.com

Loewen looks like he’s afraid of Thompson. Do they know each other from the minors or something?

Oh, sure, now he starts throwing strikes against him.

  45. rob.bush@excite.com

With the lineup today, I really don’t know why the bunt call wasn’t made with Wilson up. Or can Wilson not bunt?

  46. rob.bush@excite.com

Austin, I will be extremely pissed if that happens. I don’t think there is any reason to pull Wang right now.

  47. rob.bush@excite.com

    Re: Pitching changes

We are very greatful for your decision to bring in Rodrigo Lopez. We ask that when you make changes in the future, that Lopez will always be your first choice to face the Yankees.

    Thank you.

  48. rob.bush@excite.com

Okay, I’m assuming Myers is in for the lefty matchups. Only reason I can fathom for Torre pulling Wang out.

Now, if he gets Markasis, wouldn’t you leave him in for Tejada since Gibbons is a lefty?

  49. iheartcmwang@gmail.com

wang was amazing today, as always. 17 wins (assuming yankees win) is pretty impressive for a second year pitcher. does he have enough starts left to get to 20 wins?

  50. rob.bush@excite.com

Of course not Torre. Doesn’t matter that nobody seems to be able to get Tejada out. Bring in Proctor so that his arm gets even closer to falling off.

  51. ataustin@aol.com

Just checking some stats. I think most of us have anointed Jeter the Yankees all-time best SS, but if his 2nd 10 years are as good as his 1st 10 years, we could be talking all-time best SS, period. Old “In my day we had rocks” Honus Wagner has held the title for a longf time.

  52. ataustin@aol.com

I think Joe will use him just as often in the stretch, but not for more than an inning at a time. What killed him before was the 2 inning appearances.

  53. kayleexxx@aol.com

i hope the red sox lose.not that it mattters if they win but i dont want to hear all the **** i will hear from my boyfriend if they win.

  54. rob.bush@excite.com

I was very happy to find out this morning that KC had beaten the S*x last night. Made the Yankee loss yesterday a little more bearable.

Good job Scottie. Way to get Tejada out.

  55. jtorresmesias@hotmail.com

I couldn’t follow the game until now. So let me ask something that surely has been answered before. But try to understand me. Why Alex and Giambino weren’t in the lineup today? Just a day off. Or something else? I’ve just seen Abreu didn’t start, but he is now in the game, but what about Alex and Jason?

  56. paul1040@aol.com

ARod is out with a stomach virus. Giambi’s wrist problem is keeping him out indefinitely. He is seeing a doctor today.

  57. ataustin@aol.com

Giambi – still a sore wrist
    ARod – stomach virus

    Abreau – rest day

Leaving Nick Green to carry the load.

  58. ataustin@aol.com

He’s day-to-day, but since it hasn’t cleared up with intermittent rest their talking about several days off.

  59. ataustin@aol.com

Hi Jorge. I was in a bad mood 3 hours ago, but the Yanks are winning, we’re talkin’ baseball, life is good!

  60. jtorresmesias@hotmail.com

Fortunatelly now we can easily give him several days off. Remember Matsui is coming back soon. So Giambino can rest his wrist. We’ll need him in the playoffs.

  61. paul1040@aol.com

Giambi’s wrist seems to be a serious problem, but maybe a couple of week’s rest could help it recover.

When Matsui returns from rehab maybe he can be the regular DH and Phillips and Wilson split 1B along with Guiel.

  62. ataustin@aol.com

I’m still hoping Sheff can put in some time at 1st, too. I think he’ll be an excellent fielder. He’s had more infield experience than most old outfielders have when they move there.

  63. yankee_indian@xyz.com

Seriously. The whitesox broadcasters are utterly classless. I am not sure if they even went to school. Its like two rogues on TV.

  64. ataustin@aol.com

Just checking some stats. I think most of us have anointed Jeter the Yankees all-time best SS, but if his 2nd 10 years are as good as his 1st 10 years, we could be talking all-time best SS, period. Old “In my day we had rocks” Honus Wagner has held the title for a long time.

    Posted by: ataustin@aol.com | September 9, 2006 06:56 PM

Okay, now that everyone’s nails are out of their teeth and can type again, what do you think?

  65. jtorresmesias@hotmail.com

I think you’re right Andy. Captain could become the best SS ever. He is amazing. A real baseball player. At bat. On the field. Running. Intelligent……….

  66. yankee_indian@xyz.com

Honestly, he may be the player with the best attitude all time but I dont think he is the best shortstop.

  67. ataustin@aol.com

Again, IF he continues at his current pace, he’ll end up with around 4000 hits, he could even make a run at the hits record. He’ll have an average a few points lower than Wagner, but 250 more HR’s. Legend has Wagner as an unbelievable fielder, but Jeter is certainly very, very good in the field.

  68. rob.bush@excite.com

    1-0 KC.

In order for Jeter to be considered the best SS ever, a few things need to happen. Like A-Rod never returning to the positiong. Like Tejada fading early. Otherwise, I don’t think a lot of people will give him a fair shake and will continue to label him as overrated.

  69. ataustin@aol.com

A-Rod returning to the position could be a problem. But the only place Tejada has an advantage is in HR’s. Jeter’s BA is 30 pts. higher, his OPS is nearly 30 pts. higher, he steals more bases, he’s as good or better fielder, and he’s got 4 more rings.

  70. rob.bush@excite.com

There is no doubt in my mind that Jeter is the best all around SS today. If he continues for several more years producing as he has, there won’t be any doubt that he is the best of all time. But, he is already underappreciated by many people. I’m not sure what it would take for them to change their minds.

  71. ataustin@aol.com

Continuing to produce as he has for another 10 years may be what it takes to change their minds. 4000 hits would be hard to ignore.

  72. pinstripes242@yahoo.com

Hi all. I was at a cookout today, so I missed the game. It looks like I missed a good one. Oh well.

A couple of comments after scanning the posts:

    1. I love Bernie. I think he accepts his role, but believes he is capable of more. He wouldn’t be a very good fit for the NL because he can’t play the field, so he would only be a pinch hitter. I want him to retire as a Yankee. Then, he can concentrate on his music.

    2. Rob, I also hate Kevin Millar. He has a big mouth. He started the whole Cowboy Up thing, and all of a sudden Bostonians were wearing cowboy hats. Also, the walks. You know which ones I mean.

    3. I don’t know if Jeter will end up being the greatest SS ever, but he brings a lot to the game. No doubt he is a great player, and better appreciated by those who watch him on a regular basis.

Well, I am signing off for the night. Hopefully I will be able to catch some of the game tomorrow.

  73. swolansky@mail.colgate.edu

Everyone, don’t forget to root for our Trenton Thunder boys, who are battling to stay in the playoffs tonight. They’re currently winning 3-1

    Go Matsui! Go Thunder!

  74. Lola

NO WAY IN **** JETER IS A BETTER SHORTSTOP THAN JETER WAS. hA HA. ThIS IS The overstatement of the year! LOL…Paul, i know you dislike ARod, but this is a bit much, and i am not just saying that cause i am a fan of ARod (cause trust me, i love Jeet to pieces!)

  75. ataustin@aol.com

No other SS is close to 4000 hits. Honus Wagner had 3415 hits and a .327 BA in an era when batting average was valued over power. Next closest is Cal Ripken with 3164. Jeter has 2124 hits in virtually 11 seasons. He would have to average about 190 hits for 10 more seasons to make 4000. Difficult, but not impossible.

  76. rob.bush@excite.com

Poor Luke Hudson. Last start, he leaves the game with a 4 run lead against the Yankees and the bullpen can’t protect it. Tonight he leaves with a 2 run lead and the bullpen can’t hold it. Although, tonight he was charged with all 4 runs, since he walked the two that scored to tie it up.

  77. ataustin@aol.com

If A-Rod had stayed at SS his whole career and put up the numbers that he probably will, he’d have been hands-down the greatest. When he played for the Mariners I always defended Jeter as better, but over time, with the consistant offensive production A-Rod has put up (among the best in history at any position) I have to go with my head over my heart and say A-Rod would have been better. Which makes his sacrifice to move to 3rd even more amazing.

  78. rob.bush@excite.com

Jeter would have to play until he was 42 without any let down for that to happen, Austin. I don’t know if that is possible for **** to do. I think he will definitely get more than 3000, though, and surpass Wagner if he stays healthy.

  79. rob.bush@excite.com

Btw, I can’t believe we’re forgetting that Jeter extended his hit streak to 19 games today. Does anybody think he’ll ever put together a decent run at the record?

  80. autreyj531@strose.edu

hey just checking in and skimmed real quick through the early comments. And I was also one of the people that didn’t mention Bernie on the roster for next year. I really would love to see him in the Yankees lineup, or at least on the bench, he seems like an absolute stand up guy that would help the clubhouse/team just by being there. But I think his role would have to be in a very limited role, much like it was supposed to be this year before the injuries.

But as far as seeing him in another uniform, I don’t really know if I could accept that haha. It was hard enough watching him play in the WBC, it just didn’t seem right for him not to be wearing the navy blue pinstripes or grey with the New York across the chest.

And although I didn’t see the game today, too busy watching my hometown Syracuse almost pull out the big upset (if not for the RIDICULOUS play calling by the coach in the 2nd OT) and also my boys at Notre Dame put a pounding on Penn State, it seems as though Wang put together another tremendous outing, and the Yankees barely figured out Loewen enough haha. Getting closer and closer to that clinch.

  81. kayleexxx@aol.com

I cant even do a spanish worksheet without help. And my teacher expects me to write a 500 word report in spanish.ought to be interesting.

  82. marksman@ny-yankees.net

What’s up yall. Got home about half an hour ago. The game was pretty sweet today. Wang was stellar as usual and our offense just managed to squeak by. It’s funny because I almost wet my pants after Millar homered in the 9th inning and I DID think of Pepto just then. But yeah, they did well today and I was in a section with a lot of Yankee fans so it was pretty sweet. E# now at 13 and if the KC bullpen doesn’t fold, then I’m sure the Sox’s will. We should be looking at a clinch when the Red Sox are in town when they can watch us celebrate on the field.

  83. marksman@ny-yankees.net

Hi Kaylee, how are you? Spanish not going so well as usual?

Ortiz just grounded out with the go-ahead run on 2nd, and now they’re walking Manny.

  84. yankee_indian@xyz.com

Thank God, I dont have to see another Ortiz orgy on espn today. “captain” struck out with a man on 2nd nobody out and then Ortiz grounded out to SS.

  85. swolansky@mail.colgate.edu

I am genuinely impressed with the Royals, even if they lose this game. They certainly are not the same Royals we saw at the beginning of the season. I have a feeling guys like DeJesus and Shealy are going to be really good someday, and are going to be major thorns in the Yanks’ sides.

  86. marksman@ny-yankees.net

KC up 7-4 on 3 run homer by Jeff Keppinger.

Tomorrow should be a huge slugfest with Wright and Penn.

  87. marksman@ny-yankees.net

KC is allowed to show off, just not when they’re playing us.

Watch Ortiz homer just to boost his late inning stats.

  88. yankeefan1@enter.net

Just got in about 20 minutes ago.

Great job by Wang, Farnsy gave me heartburn.

I see my alma mater (PSU) got clocked.

What’s this, Boston losing? Guess the run Kasey predicted is going to come after they are eliminated. Ha ha

Mike I went looking for you but didn’t see anyone that fit your description. You must have been at the hot dog stand or something when I was walking around.

  91. yankeefan1@enter.net

I see Trenton lost in extra innings so their (and Hughes) season is over.

Matsui was 1-3 with a double, so I guess he’ll join the Yanks now.

I was up the 3rd base line, box seats, Section 64. Sorry I missed you. Was at the Aquarium today before the game.

  94. marksman@ny-yankees.net

I don’t see how you and your boyfriend are compatible. If I had a girlfriend, I’d make sure she was a Yankee fan, otherwise I doubt it would work out too well.

I’m thinking they rest Giambi for a while, put Matsui at DH, and rotate Wilson, Guiel, and eventually maybe Sheffield at 1st base.

  97. yankeefan1@enter.net

You’ll get us this year. Next year is what I’m looking forward to for PSU when Morelli, Derek Williams, etc. return.

Being gone all day, I don’t know if this was mentioned, but Travis Hafner is done for the year with a fractured hand.

  98. sam13281328@aol.com

Rob, Texas doesn’t have a QB at all,,,I don’t know if he attempted 15 passes tonight…he was as I would say,,,”pathetic”…..Texas should drop, Notre Dame and USC will move up

  99. sam13281328@aol.com

Hafner is awesome…can’t believe White Sox won that game last night…I hate Chicago ALMOST as much as Boston

  100. rob.bush@excite.com

    Hey, uh, everybody?

KC just clinched the season series against Boston. Aren’t they 5-3 against the S*x with only 1 game to play?

  101. marksman@ny-yankees.net

Ok I think this girl is stalking me. I signed off AIM about an hour ago to get her off my *** and now I come back and as SOON as I get on, like before my buddy list loads, I see the IM window pop up.

    I gotta change my sn.

  102. marksman@ny-yankees.net

Yeah Russ it’s 12, I’m anticipating a clinch when the Sox are in town.

Just imagine, they watch us celebrate on the field.

  103. sam13281328@aol.com

I will have to buy Mark and everyone here a drink (excpet the underage) and eat all my CROW soon……..

  104. sam13281328@aol.com

Mark, that would be great……right in front of Fanny and Gorilla man………take care all, catch you tomorrow……

  105. rob.bush@excite.com

Vik, I knew there was a reason I was cheering Minnesota on today. haha. Here I was hoping they’d hold on and win, thinking all the while, why am I cheering for the Twinkies? Now I know.

  106. marksman@ny-yankees.net

Yeah we are only a half game back and that could change as soon as tomorrow. We face Penn, he of the 108.0 ERA tomorrow and Detroit faces Santana so who knows.

  107. rob.bush@excite.com

Andrew, I try not to. lol.

I don’t know. Maybe I was just wierd, but I didn’t have a steady girlfriend until I was 21. It’s not that I didn’t date. I was just more about having fun.

  108. yankee_indian@xyz.com

I wouldn’t be surprised if Detroit misses the playoffs. But living in Detroit, I will root for them as long as there isn’t a conflict of interest with the yankees. I rooted for the twins today.

  109. marksman@ny-yankees.net

    Later Mike.

Kaylee, if he tries to control your life, I think there MIGHT be a problem with the relationship. Just might be.

  110. yankee_indian@xyz.com

kind of funny listening to two 14 yr old talk abt relationships. Enjoy urselves guys. Knock yourselves out. Dont worry abt relationships or anything yet. Just dont get yourselves into bad company. You will be fine.

  111. mtglew@aol.com

    1) Red Suc*s are down by SIX runs. Big POOPY just gets a hit in bottom of 12. 2 on 1 out. Annoying pathetic BOS announcer says: mmmm, Sox have something going! Oh, and they lose the game by those sweet six runs…

    2) In order for Yanks to clinch while Red sox are on the field at the Stadium, Yanks will have to win the next 2 at BAL (Magic number then at 10), and Suc*ks will have to lose the next 2 at home) MN at 8), and then win ALL FOUR games against the *****s. I cannot see Suc*ks losing all those games.

    3) Kaley…. YOU’RE IN CHARGE!! Let’s GO Yankees!

  112. rob.bush@excite.com

Good point there glew. I agree: hard to imagine the S*x losing so many games in a row. So probably no clinch at home. But if the Yankees can take 3 of 4 from the S*x in that series, that’s the final nail in the coffin, for sure.

  113. yankee_indian@xyz.com

This is our best chance to clinch when the sox are in town:

The sox go 2-2 over the next four. We go 4-1 in the next 5 and go 3-1 in the series vs sox.

  114. mtglew@aol.com

Oh, wait, my bad! I thought Yanks play Suc*ks this coming Tuesday. But TB comes first for us, and Suc*s are NEXT weekend! Yes, let’s clich on Sunday night ESPN baseball night!

  115. rob.bush@excite.com

Giambi is out till at least Tuesday, it looks like.

To be honest, I don’t think Penn will be horrible tomorrow. I think the Yankees will score on him, but I don’t imagine them killing him in the 1st inning or 2. Of course, I hope I’m wrong.

When you put it like that, Vik, then perhaps it is possible to clinch in the series vs. Boston. It is not inconceivable that they will go 2-2 over the next 4 games, or even worse. I mean, they just lost the season series to the Royals today! And they’ve lost 5 in a row to that team!

  116. rob.bush@excite.com

Glew, I was thinking the same thing when I agreed with you.

I just looked at the schedules. The only thing Boston has going for them in their next series is that they are playing the Orioles. But they are on the road, where they have a losing record.

Also, Tavarez vs Redmond tomorrow. Can anybody else smell another Royal sweep?

  117. yankee_indian@xyz.com

Hope you did not jinx the royals Rob. I was thinking the same but did not say it because I did not want to be THE jinxer.

  118. mtglew@aol.com

SUC*kS have Monday off, and then head to BAL – whom they have MURDERED this year. So, let’s put it this way: SUC*KS win tomorrow (can KC sweep them at home? Banish the thought), and take 2-3 from Baltimore. That gives us one game for the magic number – which leaves us with 11. We split the next two with BAL. MN at 10. Take 2-3 from TB, MN at 8. We now have four against SUC*KS. Sweep them, and we have the division. Of ocurse, if BAL can take 2-3 and if we can win both remaining against BAL, then things can be even more exciting…

  119. rob.bush@excite.com

Lol. If I jinxed them, I’m sorry. But, you have to agree, they have a good chance with their best pitcher going in Redman (not Redmond, like I said earlier lol) and the S*x sending Tavarez out. I mean, that’s a good chance of being in the S*x bullpen by the 4th or 5th inning. No, a sweep isn’t a given, as I’m sure the S*x will be playing for a lot of pride tomorrow, but there is a good chance of a Royals win.

  120. rob.bush@excite.com

Oh, that makes me sad. Just noticed that Wanger’s next start will probably be on Thursday against TB. That means he won’t pitch any of the Boston games. Shucks.

  121. yankee_indian@xyz.com

As I guy who doesn’t really understand the technicalities of pitching except by the results produced, I have a question for you guys. Do you guys think Wang can sustain the success he is having this year for some time. I am asking that only because he was not even mentioned in the prospects talk until he actually showed up? If he is really as good as he is now, why wasn’t he even mentioned in the talks?

  122. kzimoulis@yahoo.com

Cliching on Sunday Night ESPN Baseball Night while the Red Sox in town would be all too perfect. I don’t know what those announcers would say. Maybe something like…. Well, it’s a shame the Red Sox season turned out the way that it did. The Yankees win again. But the Red Sox! Let’s talk about those guys… and then goes over there entire season.

  123. swolansky@mail.colgate.edu

Actually, Wang and Cano were considered the biggest prospects on the Yankees’ farm prior to the 2005 season. Phillip Hughes didn’t attract as much attention until Spring Training 2006, and while Eric Duncan was considered Giambi’s replacement, he was not declared ready for the Majors the way Wang and Cano were. It certainly wasn’t a coincidence that they were called upon first to fill in at their respective positions. And they certainly did a good job at it, too. And that’s not even counting THIS season!

  124. Lola

****, i have tried to be as dplomatic about this as possible as a yankee fan, but i think i can say now that dammmmnnnnn the Red Sox ship has really freaking sank. I dont even think i feel sorry for them anymore…its more like, wow…they totally cant win to save their lives. lol. They have their “complete” team now. So glad the truth comes out. No hiding behind injuries now (although definitely some legit ones). Its good to see them **** down the stretch in their “full” strenght. Amen. 😀

  125. m4rk6@yahoo.com

swo: I read somewhere that Cashman was ready to trade Wang if somebody asked for him, but nobody did and he was luck that way. So I was wondering.

    Posted by: yankee_indian@xyz.com | September 10, 2006 01:45 AM

Yeah, I vaguely recall reading an article where Cashman said Wang was almost traded. This was when the Boss wanted Randy Johnson badly and they were offering *anyone* from the minors. Good thing it didnt happen, eh? 🙂

  126. jjc11293@msn.com

Middle of the week fun: The Yankees are 17-5 on Wednesdays.

Red Cold Sox: If you take out interleague games and games against the Orioles, the Red Sox are 48-64.
