Radio daze
For the past eight months or so, you have all heard my ranting and raving on this blog. Monday and Tuesday, you'll have a chance to hear me on MLB Radio and see me on BaseballChannel.TV.
I will be co-hosting the Hot Stove Show with Seth Everett on Monday from 4-6 p.m. ET, then again on Tuesday from 3-5 p.m. ET.
With the Alfonso Soriano news, the usual hot-stove rumor mill and several other stories to follow, we'll have a lot to talk about.
You can click here to tune in. Feel free to call into the show or to send e-mails and/or IMs while we're on the air. And, of course, I'm sure you will all keep a running comments section on my performance. Be kind, though ... I'm still relatively new at this!
Good news, Mark. You can bet we'll be following you

Wow, that is great, Mark. I am sure you will do very well.
You know that Seth Everett is a real camera hog. So whenever he speaks for more than 15 seconds, yawn loudly and tap your watch to make sure it has not stopped.

Catalonotto going to Texas. Always a thorn in the Yanks' side, at least he is heading out of the division.
Nomar back to Dodgers (had two very different halves last year), Sori appears headed to Cubs and Moises Alou headed to Mets.

Fernando, sometimes the best move is no move. Not much has been transacted so far that the Yankees would have benefited from by outbidding.
The Matsuzaka deal was outlandish and the only other player who may have helped was Justin Speier. But the 33 year old got 4 years from the Angels.

Oh I agree. With the exception of Speier there hasn't been a free agent siging that the Yankees could have used, and even then our bullpen really doesn't need that much help.
I've heard that the Rangers are shopping around Mark Teixiera. They need some good young pitching, and the Yankees just recently acquired that. Do you think a trade could work out? Teixiera is a good, young first baseman who could potentially have a long career with the Yanks.
I just know Cashman's working on something, and I like to consider the limitless possibilities.

We'll have to wait. Remember how Brian flew under the radar last year to nab JD? It was a last-minute shocker.
He's not Matsuzaka, but I'd like to see if Brian puts in a bid for Igawa.

Teixeira would love to play on the Yanks. Why?
Don Mattingly.
He idolizes him and even wears the number 23 because of him. I'm sure he would love the chance to play under him, especially if he's next in line to become the manager.
I'm not going to speculate on who the Yanks should send the Rangers, but I'm sure something could be arranged if Cashman thought it was a good idea. But it would have to be a lot of pitching talent.

Ah, but Mark, when the Redskins beat the Cowboys, you were "reveling" my friend. Injuries are no excuse. Poor Washington...bla, bla, bla....bottom line is Dallas is a better team this year....I love it when Washington loses, injuries or no injuries, a loss is a loss....OK, done now....however, if Washington plays the Giants again...go Skins....
Report any abuse or spam
I agree, and that's why I'm waiting in anticipation. I definetely didn't see the Johnny Damon acquisition happening. I just think it'd be crazy if Cashman landed a big name out of no where.
Igawa doesn't sound like he'll be much of an upgrade. He's said to have an 84-88mph fast ball, with a pretty good curve ball. The one thing in his favor is that he looks ferocious.
Report any abuse or spam
I didn't know that about Teixiera. I think if we gave them Sanchez, Rasner, and Veras they'd be more than happy to trade him.
Plus, I heard that when Teixeira was in High School a Red Sox scout had come to his home and some how insulted his father, which led them to sign with the Rangers. They mentioned it during one of the Rangers/Yankees games. I thought it was funny when I heard it.
Report any abuse or spam
I've been saying this ever since the rumor started, teixera would be a great fit...Paul has been saying it since like august lol.
He's already clean shaven too. I would love if texas took sanchez and then maybe some lower prospects. Tex is a big deal, especially in yankee stadium, I might even go as far as to give up clippard with such a long line of pitching prospects waiting.
Report any abuse or spam
Not a bad idea, rasner, sanchez or clippard (hopefulyl sanchez, clippard doesn't have injury history to my knowledge) and then maybe a low level prospect should be plenty
Report any abuse or spam
the problem is I don't know who else wants him and what they can offer, I would even eat part of his contract, texas is used to deals with us like that.
Report any abuse or spam
I've been pushing the Tex deal since Spring of 2002. Just kidding. But I think we should try to work that out. Even though offense isn't really a huge need now, its better to get him than to just settle for some free agent.
Report any abuse or spam
He not only has a powerful bat, is a switch hitter with power from both sides, but he also plays gold glove defense and can play for a solid 10 yrs.
Report any abuse or spam
My endorsement of Teixeira clearly contradicts my persistent support of Eric Duncan, but frankly, you don't get much better than Teixeira.
Doubt anything will actually happen though. Even if you are desperately looking for pitching, you just don't give up talent like Teixeira.
Report any abuse or spam
yeah but the rumor mills almost all say texas is shopping tex, so I don't know how hard texas is holding onto him and they are desperate for pitching.
Report any abuse or spam
Tex would be a great pickup, but I just don't see it happening.
The Yanks clearly need pitching, and not another bat. I'd love to see a guy like Andy Phillips get a chance at 1st, and you could spell him w/ Giambi and get Melky in there every now and again.
As for Cashman, my prediction is that he turns around and trades the young guns we've been getting for an established #3 starter. This way we'll have our 5, Proctor as our potential 6th, and then the several good young starters from our farm system coming up in the next year or so to replace RJ and Moose.
Later guys...
Report any abuse or spam
Texas gives up talent all the time.
I wouldn't want to see Andy Phillips starting next season. He's a good backup guy, but his bat is weak and he has trouble with breaking pitches. I honestly beleive we could make that trade since we have good young pitching that we can trade while still holding onto our key pitching prospects.
Report any abuse or spam
I don't think some people are getting it. Tex isn't a big bat trade, he is a gold glove defense that happens to be the the full package trade. We'd be getting him to improve our defense AND our offense, and maybe even our clubhouse, plus he is young and has not even hit his prime yet. With chamberlain on the radar now, sanchez, hughes, clippard, kennedy, and that tall guy i always forget and mike always reminds me of, we have more than a pitching staff of solid prospects in the system, plus we know wang is going nowhere. Plus there is karstens. We need pitching right now, but not 1,2,3 years down the line. The pitching can be solved right now with a guy like lilly or meche. Giving up 1 or 2 prospects for a guy who is also young (we're not giving up talent for a veteran) and can solve our first base problem for the next decade (giambi will be gone in what two years anyway?) is worth it to me, when we still have 5 or 6 more in the system.
The Yankee pitching prospects are the only strength we have right now int he farm, you can argue we have an influx, i wouldn't hurt to get a guy like tex using 1 or two of them.
Obviously not guys like hughes, brentcox or both sanchez AND clippard.
Report any abuse or spam
Hey Swo,
This could just be my impression, but it seems like Duncan has been a huge dissapointment, and he's not looking like he's improving as much as you'd like. Kind of like CJ Henry or whatever his name was who we got in the first round draft pick a couple years back and we recently traded to the Phillies.
Report any abuse or spam
Rasner is in there too* That makes 9 counting wang.
Report any abuse or spam
I think my idea to trade Rasner and Sanchez for Teixiera is a good one. Throw in Veras if you have to. I think it would be fair.
Report any abuse or spam
Fernando, If Texas is happy with rasner sanchez and veras, than I am too. That is two potential starters, one a potential high end starter and a reliever, and 2 of the three have legit big league experience already. Plus with cox, the previously mentioned starting prospects and an already fairly young pen in proctor, bruney, farnsworth, and Beam if he ever gets his act together, we will only need a replacement for Mo in the future anyway. And that is all assuming we don't use free agency for any pitcher.
Report any abuse or spam
The interesting thing about Igawa is that he is 27, shouldn't be expensive, and is a lefty. The Yanks don't have much in terms of young lefty starters.
If it's true about the Red Sox scout ticking off Teixara's father, it proves what goes around comes around. Once a Yankee scout ticked off someone's dad. Kid by the name of Carl Yastrzemski.
The tall guy is Dellin Betances, and yes, it was C.J. Henry who went to the Phils.

falejandro, Minor League prospects are gauged more by their potential than by their raw stats. Andy Phillips had a disgusting year at AAA last year, but he wasn't given any attention by Major League teams because the potential isn't there. Yet Duncan is still regarded as the top infield prospect because clearly something is there that doesn't translate to stats. He's shown flashes of brilliance, and all he needs is to stay healthy and remain consistent.
I'm not saying stats have nothing to do with it, but certainly stats alone don't say everything. Mariano Rivera and Derek Jeter had some pretty unimpressive Minor League seasons too.
Oh, and as Mike already learned, I'm never going to yield in my support of Duncan, so don't bother trying to convince me otherwise! :-P

Swo, I have wanted to get Teixeira as a Yankee for 3 years now. More than you wantthe guy from Cincy.
If I had a sister I would offer her to Teixeira. May I borrow anyone's sister? She will marry a potentially wealthy man because he is a free agent next year.
The Yanks should not trade anything for him unless they could sign him to an extension. But as good as he is I would not trade 3 pitchers for him unless 2 of the three were Colter Bean and Kris Wilson. But since they are free agents I doubt they could be traded.

Imagine how scary Howard would be if he cuts down on the Ks (181 last year).

Then he'd be as good as Albert Pujols.

I don't like Pujols any more. I read that he mocked the other teams several times in the playoffs. That is not a wise thing to do, win or lose.
Report any abuse or spam
Sure, it's possible to be unanimous.
I would say Howard is average. No Scott, to be sure. Remember Pujols won the GG.
Teixeira would be super, but what would Texas want? I think they would ask for you-know-who given their pitching woes, and HE is off limits.
The MVP vote goes 14 points for a 1st place vote, then 9-8-7-etc. down to 10th place. Voters are to list 10 names in order. There are rumors that if Jeter wins, he could do it by not having the largest number of 1st place votes, but by placing in the top 3 on all ballots.
Report any abuse or spam
Good choice on Howard. If he could boost his average in years to come he has the potential to be a triple crown winner, though if Pujols could out slug Howard I suppose he could be a triple crown winner as well. I think Howard won it by carrying the Phillies the last month. Its a good look.
Report any abuse or spam
I heard the same rumors mike. I would include sanchez in the tex deal but they will want established talent too, so you have to throw in Rasner. I would assume an unproven pitcher and a high prospect pitcher are not good enough so that is where beam comes in....Though if texas wants pavano, it's a wrap. Give them pavano and sanchez and call it a day.

Just needs to cut the Ks...but even with 181 Ks, .313-58-149...scary.
And great power to LF...which helps in that bandbox.

To be a triple crown winner you need to lead the league in all three offensive categories including batting average. .313 isn't bad, but not close to the .344 that Sanchez hit this season. Not to mention that he's still behind Pujols .331 average.

I'd take Teixeira in a heartbeat. Texas needs pitching right now, so it would probably take at least one of the pitchers most ready for this year - Sanchez, Rasner, or Karstens.
Three young pitchers may be pushing it, I'd try 2 pitchers plus Phillips. Matt Stairs is the Rangers back-up 1st baseman so they'll need a replacement.

I'd have given the MVP to Pujols. Their basic offensive stats were a wash except 181/50 strikeouts, which I think is a huge advantage for Pujols. Both carried their teams to almost identical records. Howard is an average fielder, Pujols is Gold Glove. But the biggest advantage is in hitting with RISP (Pujols hit .397 — well above his season average, Howard .256 — well below his season average), and RISP and two outs (Pujols hit .435, Howard .247).

Hey all.. Ryan Howard wins NL MVP!! Very very much deserved, IMO; I think the reason Howard won over Pujols is that Howard was more singly responsible for his team's run. For a 2nd-year player to do what Howard did, I think, is impressive enough to win him the MVP.
Anyway, reading thru the comments, I definitely love the idea of trading for Tex. Paul, I think your proposal, while certainly intriguing, is prob. a bit too ambitious to happen. I'd go for the deal Andy suggested-- 2 pitchers, one who can start in 2007 plus Phillips. For some reason I'm really keen on Rasner so I don't want it to be him that goes. Sanchez, while he is said to probably have better stuff, also kinda scares me with the whole being on the DL 8 times in the last 4 years thing. I'd actually want to keep Sanchez and Rasner tho, and send Karstens, Phillips and maybe Britton, but maybe we couldnt get away with that.

Anyway, who does everyone think the Yanks should/will sign as a backup C? I think they need to act soon on that because the market is thin, it won't take long for the best options to be taken.
I was for Henry Blanco but the Cubs resigned him, I think the best option would be Gregg Zaun. Someone on here I think spoke of rumors of him going to KC--egads brain--so the Yanks should act on this. I would also be in favor of Lieberthal if he is willing to be a backup.
Report any abuse or spam
I agree with the Gregg Zaun idea, though they may want to consider trading for a backup catcher. I like Javier Valentin on the Reds seeing how he's a switch hitting career backup catcher.
Report any abuse or spam
Backup catchers are primarily good defensive catchers. I'm not so keen on Gregg Zaun in that sense, but maybe Tony Pena can work on him or something. I frankly don't care who we get for backup, so whatever Cashman does is good enough for me.

I just read that the Dodgers re-signed Nomar..2 year deal, $18.5 mil. So I guess we can scratch the idea of signing him to play 1st although I was never that big on the idea/never thought it was going to happen.

I think Toby Hall is the best bet. He is younger than posada and was a starter for a period of time. He was also pretty clutch.
Tex for phillips a guy like rasner and a guy like sanchez might actually work, and since we aren't doing much this offseason I would put some sort of money incentive in the deal if I had to also

Oh and I also think Hall has played some first base in his day as well and would be fairly cheap.

Hey isn't that Pelittere guy or whatever his name is doing pretty good in the AFL? Could he be considered for the back up roll as a young, defensive catcher? Who else do we have in the minors that we could bring up?
Speaking of catchers and minors, whatever happened to that 16 year old 230 lbs catching prospect they signed for a million dollars over the season? Is he going to be in the minors any time soon?

I think Zaun wants to go somewhere he can be the #1 catcher. Valentin is not a FA, he's signed through 2007 with club option for 2008. Hall is also signed through 2007.
My guess is we'll get someone like Robert Fick or give Todd Greene another try. I like Lieberthal if he's healthy. Maybe we can convince Barajas to back up Jorge for 2 years then take over as #1. It would be nice to have a back-up catcher that's not an auto-out.

Fernando, Pelleteri (not sure how to spell his name) sounds pretty good sounds good. And I think they should consider if he is ready for the majors.
As for Baby Huey, he will be in the minors next year I think.

Yes, I know Valentin is not an FA, but still a decent trade option. And let's be honest, the market is very good for free agents, but not very good for teams. Trading may be a necessity.

Hmm, Toby Hall might be a good bet, Vince. I didn't even know he was a FA, but I think he is adequate and like that he plays 1st too. Barajas isn't a bad idea but I wouldn't want to assure him of the everyday job in 2 years! And also, I agree Swo at this stage, we should not be concentrating on trading for a backup C. I certainly wouldnt have minded if Vance Wilson had been included in the Sheff deal, but he wasn't so we just have to take the best of what is out there. The reason I think it's a somewhat pressing need is because we should sign someone soon, before all the good guys are taken.
Report any abuse or spam
Mike, why don't you like Lieberthal? Injury risk?
Report any abuse or spam
Just don't like the way he calls a game or his D. It seems like the times the Phils did well recently were the times he was out and someone else caught (a few years ago w/Estrada, this year with Coste). Not only that, I think it was last year where he hit something like .147 with RISP.
Report any abuse or spam
I'd love to have a young backup C, but with the youngsters on the way, a good steady hand to guide them might be more important. One of my selling points for Miller.
Report any abuse or spam
Just my opinion. I thought a few years ago the Phils pitchers had a much better ERA when Pratt caught them than Lieby. So that is my argument.
Report any abuse or spam
Mike isn't Posada the good steady hand and the backup should be younger but not necessarily very young so they have a catcher to bridge the gap?
Report any abuse or spam
Good point, Vince. But I'd have both. Esp. in the bullpen. Who's to say. Zaun could be available now. I see KC traded for Jason LaRue of the Reds. Barajas would not be a bad backup. I wonder if Miller would "drop down" into a backup role. The Brewers had a club option on him but I haven't read anything on whether they picked it up. Out of the backups available (posted on previous blog) I liked Miller the best.

Here it is:
backup catchers:
Widger (been there, done that)
Javy Jopez...yeh, right
Mirabelli...uh, no.
Sandy Alomar Jr. ...is 40
Paul Bako
Rod Barajas
Gregg Zaun (rumored to go to KC--who knows now that KC went and got LaRue now)
I doubt seriously that Benjie Molina (FA) will take a backup role. Both Jays catchers, Zaun and Molina are free agents.
Todd Pratt...old
Einar Diaz
Damian Miller (if he would accept backup role, would be a good fit despite his age...one year deal?) Did Brewers exercise club option?
Mike DiFelice ... No. Was actually catching in AA Binghamton last year.
Kelly Stinnett...been there, done that
Mike Lieberthal...not sold on him. Don't know if he would accept backup role.
Mike Piazza...can't play 1b, and I doubt seriously that he'd accept a backup C role. Lousy Def. C anyway.
Todd Greene...been there, done that (how many times have I written that?)
Sal Fasano...once more, been there done that.

Chase Wright, Jeff kennard and Bronson Sardinha.
At least Wright is a LHP. Got to get him in AA next year. I don't know too much about him except what's written in the press release.
Wright, 23, was named the 2006 Florida State League "Pitcher of the Year" after posting a 12-3 record with a league-best 1.88 ERA in 37 games (14 starts) with Class-A Tampa (119.2IP, 95H, 32R, 25ER, 43BB, 100K). He held opposing hitters to a .218 batting average (95-for-435) during the year and went 4-0 with a 0.80 ERA in his final five starts of the season (33.2IP, 3ER). Wright ranked third among all Class-A pitchers with his 1.88 ERA and was tied for second among all Yankees' minor-leaguers with 12 wins. In his last two professional seasons, Wright has gone 22-7 with a 2.90 ERA and 210 strikeouts (62G/38GS). He was selected by the Yankees in the third round of the 2001 First-Year Player Draft.

Wow, when Juan Pierre gets a 5 year deal you know the market is pretty weak! Out of all the names on the FA backup C list, the ones I'd be most amenable to are Zaun, Barajas and Lieberthal. I think Lieberthal is fooling himself if he thinks he will get a starting job next year! Maybe I am putting too much stock in hitting in liking Lieb. and Zaun, but I would like the Yanks to move on this soon either way, just so we don't get stuck with the dregs of this list.
Anyhoo, I'm nervous about the Giants game! Especially because I need Tiki, Shockey and Plex to score me like 30 fantasy pts, lol. Anyone heard a final word yet on if Osi and Madison are playing, I have to go check on that. Since the Jags are banged up too, every little bit helps. LET'S GO BIG BLUE!

I think he would be pretty good but it would be tough to lose the versatility and dependability he brought to the bullpen.

I agree Paul, it isn't that Proctor wouldn't make a good starter but I am skeered to lose his arm out of the pen. I have heard people use the argument that if our starters are quality, our bullpen won't be as important, but I disagree--the bullpen is ALWAYS important. You never know with injury, doubleheaders, Farnsy's back, Moose's groin (even tho I have that under control, lol), Randy's back, Pavano's everything... and even the best starter is going to get shelled sometime.
Don't get me wrong, I'd rather they start Proctor than sign a Meche or Schmidt, but I hope that when Cash told him to report to camp ready to start, he was just being cautious incase something he is looking at now falls through.

Actually, to be honest, I am increasingly hoping they can convince Pettitte to come back for a 1 year deal. That way they don't have to bite on any of the mediocre FA pitching and can wait till something more promising comes along next year. If Andy is serious about retiring, this would allow him to do so with HIS TEAM, in NY where he belongs. And no long-term commitment from either party. Seems to be a decent fit if you ask me!

I suggested Proctor be a starter before last season because up until that point he hadn't done anything for the team.

Before last season, I was suggesting that Proctor be included in trades... man am I glad that didn't happen! I remember reading around this year's deadline that Scotty had expressed discontent that his name was being oft-mentioned in trade rumors.. Cash told him, it's okay, just start pitching like you did last year and I can assure you you won't hear your name in trade discussions anymore. LOL!!

Ah, but Mark, the Cowboys will have a better record, and better team this year, even if they both don't go to the Super Bowl, which is 2nd best......just like the Yanks were better than Boston this year, even though neither of them went to the World Series....

Hey all.
This certainly has been a winter of overpaying...the Red Sox on Matsuzaka, the Cubs on Soriano, and now the Dodgers on Pierre-yikes, what are they thinking. 5 years?!?!
Someone (Alex?) mentioned picking up Gagne. That is a move I would definitely agree with. Throw in a few incentives and a cheap basic contract and you get a low risk, high reward player that would really make the back of the bullpen scary and make the transition easier if Proctor is going back to the rotation (something I would not support but could handle if it were necessary).
On the backup C topic...no strong opinion in any direction. Hall, Barajas, Zaun...I'd be fine with any of them and they are a bit of an upgrade over the mess of this year.
Not sure when I'll be able to post on here again...busy night tomorrow night, then leaving for Thanksgiving in Chicago on Wednesday. Should be fun, spending time with all of my Cubs fan cousins. I doubt they'll be happy with the latest desperate attempts by the Cubs...not just Soriano and Piniella, but Mark DeRosa for 3 years, re-signing Kerry Wood, Wade Miller...yikes.
Though on second thought, the AL MVP is announced in 15 hours so I may need to put up a celebratory/ranting post, depending on the outcome.

"If I had a sister I would offer her to Teixeira.

Believe it or not, Russ, I have grown to hate the Eagles and Giants so much more than the Cowboys, since I have many friends from NY and Philly. With McNabb out for the year and the Giants looking shaky, I don't really care what happens to Dallas.
The Redskins win over the Cowboys will go down as my top highlight of the year, so I'm as happy as a fan of a 3-7 team can be.
At least I still have USC to root for.

Jeez Mark we don't agree on anything. Giants are only shaky because of injuries, the main ones are temporary.

I like USC, but if they play Ohio State, they'd lose by at least two touchdowns. Now, I wouldn't be happy if Dallas were 3-7 even if they beat Washington twice. I hate the Eagles, Giants, and Skins equally. Skins could step up and play a half way descent game and beat the Giants for me later in the season, that would be nice. OSU would have beaten Michigan by 9 points or more if they weren't playing the prevent defense late in the 4th quarter Saturday. They really are unstoppable this year. Pretty good for a team losing 9 defensive players from a year ago.........

Although, still like pro football better. College football has some dumb rules that I can't stand, especially the pass interference rule that isn't a spot foul and your down when your knee touches, just to name a couple of dumb rules.
Report any abuse or spam
How can you say that? Michigan was a personal foul away from winning that thing. All the momentum in the world, the comeback in motion and they ransack troy brown's face into the sidelines and get a penalty and OSU turns it into a td. That was it, michigan came right back with another td but it was too late, without that personal foul it would be OT and then who knows.

Its not fair to compare other players to Derek Jeter since he's known to be a jedi.
Mussina's deal is pending a physical.
Question to the blog. With as many players as Scott Boras represents, how does he make time to negotiate for all of them? He even represents Ian Kennedy the first round draft pick the Yankees signed. If he's representing big league players, minor league players, and players from Japan, it seems like he would not have enough time to negotiate with all of them. The most common theory is that Scott Boras is actually a machine thats programmed to shoot out unreasonable contracts. Outside of that, I have no idea how he does it.
Report any abuse or spam
Fernando: It is not how many players he represents that determines his workload but how many of his clients are involved in transactions, particularly FA transactions this year that determines his work load. I think that would be no more than 10 to 15 per offseason. That doesn't sound like a lot of work to me given the kind of money he makes.
Report any abuse or spam
I used to agree with people who said the yankees are responsible for driving up prices of FAs, though I did not think it was wrong. Not any more. This offseason, when it was VERY obvious to everybody that the yankees wouldn't spend a penny on anything but pitching the prices of position players have been ridiculously high. Which proves that it is not JUST the yankees. In the last few years everybody that had a need AND the money spent it. Texas (ARod), Mets (Beltran, Pedro), Redsox (Manny, Schilling, Matsuzaka), Cubs (Lee, Soriano, Ramirez) etc just to name a few. But ONLY the yankees took the blame. Anybody know why?
Report any abuse or spam
Yeah, but think about how much time it takes to really negotiate. The Matsuzaka deal alone looks like it will drag, and then he needs to go find Barry Zito a deal. Negtiations take a lot of time. But you're right in saying that he makes the money to make it worthwhile. I wonder what he does during the season when there's less negotiating that needs to happen.

What do you guys think abt the idea of trading Abreu to the Angels for one of their young arms and Shields/another young arm. We can put Melky LF and matsui in RF. Keep in mind Abreu is signed only through next season. And he will be looking for a big and long contract if he keeps up his play. Also, he waived his no trade clause for Philly to trade him to NY. So, I don't think the no trade clause is valid any more. I prefer to trade Giambi but he has a no trade clause.

Oh, also, Vik-- re: your post about trading Abreu..I don't think we should do it and here's why. In 2008 Vernon Wells is a FA and I want want want him in pinstripes! So I was thinking that after next season we can trade Damon to a team looking for an OF/DH type and sign Wells as our new CF. Abreu will be a FA then and can go to any team he chooses. Then our 08 OF could be Melk in RF, Wells in center and Matsui in left. After 08, Matsui's deal will be up and Tabata will probably be ready, thus giving us an awesome OF of Melky/Wells/Tabata.

It will be hard to trade Damon. I am sure he'll have a huge fan base in NYY land if he already doesn't have one. He has the talent and his effort is never lacking. I like Wells too. Yes, I know why. Everybody has a jealous hatred of the Yankees. They paint us to be the bad guys, but in reality they want to be us. It goes with the territory of owning 26 world championships. Ahh, see I like Wells a LOT. Always been a big fan of his; he is one of the most well-rounded players in the majors right now, IMO. But you're right that we can't just assume he will sign with us when he becomes a FA. I'm pretty sure he wants to go to TX actually, so our offer would have to be pretty sweet (I personally think Wells is worth an obscene amount of $ tho.) But if he DOES sign with us, THEN we can trade Damon. I agree that Damon's a great player, but he is definitely not better than Wells, IMO, and by then he might be in decline and have to DH a lot anyway. And, the leadoff spot in our lineup wouldn't even suffer as I believe Melky will be able to lead off by then.
Report any abuse or spam
Ohh I thought Matsui and Damon were only signed through 08. OK well that messes up my plan a little but it's still workable!
2008...Abreu gone. We can sign Wells as a FA and pay Damon to waive his NTC like the Phillies did with Abreu. As long as we're sending Damon to a good team, I think he'll go along with it. Then in 08 we have Melky/Wells/Matsui, with Tabata hopefully ready to come up in case of injury. Then, in 2009, Matsui can be the regular DH.
I know Wells will cost a fortune, but I think he is worth every red cent!

Giambi has a full no trade clause through 2008 and there is a 2009 option.
2007 $21 million ($3 million more than 2006)
2008 $21 million
2009 $22 million or $5 million buyout
I just cannot believe that deal for someone unable to play 1B.
Report any abuse or spam
As long as Giambi can give us those homeruns, I don't care how much they pay him. With Sheffield gone, we're really relying on him and A-Rod to be the majority of our offense. That is unless of course we can trade for Mark Teixiera.
Report any abuse or spam
I hoped that about Beltran too. And I'm *still* surprised that the Yanks didn't make more of a run at him. I guess they saw something they didn't like. But in the end it's worked out for the best, as Damon's presence on our team has been very positive. (I still don't think that precludes trading him though!)

I really like Damon's mettle and have been so impressed by him in every aspect of his game.
The Red Sox organization really showed little decency in retaining him. For them it is all about money, always has been.
They call the Yankees the Evil Empire but they are the ruthless ones. Look at Bronson Arroyo. They talked him into signing at a discount and had no intention of keeping him.
Unscrupulous organization.
They showed that right here in Boston driving out many mom and pop small business people in the area around Fenway to make it their own little Disney World where they controlled all the shops and food sold not just inside but also outside the park.

Ysnks have a 2008 option on Abreu for $16 million with a $2 million buyout.
If he performs this year as he did last I think the option is worth picking up or renegotiating.
He is one year older than Soriano, I think, and has many of the same tools, except he strikes out less and hits fewer homeruns.

Yep, Boston screwed Arroyo over bad and now they are doing the same thing to Nixon, their last home grown player. What really kills me is, Sox fans aren't even upset he is leaving. They say, oh we love Trot but he can't stay healthy. OK.. and Curt Schilling can? Manny? Kapler? Clement?

Giambi had some massive months this year. He was 2nd on the team in RBI and most of those were over 3 months.

NO to Loretta. Type A free agent. We would lose a draft choice.
Andy Phillips can do the job and I would only replace him with Teixeira. I would not sign a free agent that costs the team a draft choice unless we were talking about a great acquisition and I do not see one yet.
Things will change in December when some players are non tendered and refused arbitration and there will be a few more free agents.

Today's news that I've read:
Yanks would take Pettitte back if he wants to a) come back and b) come back to NY. Personally, I think it's Houston or nothing for Andy, and Yanks aren't gonna wait around for him. Expect Yanks to make an offer for Lilly soon and if that fails, to pursue Meche.
I expect the Red Sox to go after and sign Julio Lugo. He has been on their wish list for a while, and Bosox lost Alex Gonzalez to Cincy.
We will see what happens, but there are rumors not only of a close AL MVP vote, but also of a possible tie (only happened once--1979, Keith Hernandez and Willie Stargell. Hernandez had more 1st place votes that year 10 to 4 for Stargell (Winfield, SD, 3rd place had 4). Voting was really split that year...those are 18 votes out of 24....the others who received a 1st place vote that year were---2 for Ray Knight, 1 for Joe Niekro, 1 for Kent Tekulve, 1 for Gary Carter and 1 for Bill Madlock---Carter and Madlock finished 17th and 18th in the voting, showing how fractured the vote was). Now, 14 points goes for a 1st place vote. Madlock's 1st place vote was the ONLY vote he got, and Carter had a 1st place vote and a 10th place vote and that was the only votes he got!)

I dont think AP is much of an upgrade over Giambi. He strikes out a lot. His on base percentage is atrocious. I still like him because he is a life time yankee. But to say he is replaceable only by Texeira is overstating.

Yeah, I don't see it either. Bernie coming back, that is. The way I see it, as long as Mike Myers is in the bullpen, the Yanks need to carry an extra pitcher since Myers can only get 2 outs tops. Couple that with Melky as the 4th outfielder who needs and deserves as much playing time as possible, and there doesn't seem to be room with Bernie.
It bugged me out when he filed for free agency tho b/c I always thought with certainty he'd retire if the Yanks didn't have a spot for him. However, I think the Phillies are the one team I could handle him going to, cause then I could go see him all the time and maybe even finally get my guitar signed as I have been dreaming of for years!
It will still break my heart to see him in any other uniform though. Gawd I heart Bernie.

It would be a favor to us from him only meant to tide us over until the FAs improve in 2008, but Andy loves us, so I think he might do it! I think his wife is the main obstacle but maybe she could be persuaded to deal if it was only for a year.

Giambi is an awful fielder despite any stats presented. He cannot go get the ball as I have seen Andy Phillips do and he cannot throw the ball.
We knew he was a below average 1B player when he was signed. He was signed because he was a terrific hitter and the Yanks figured he would become DH and they had Nick Johnson coming up soon to be the permanent 1B.
I don't know how anyone who may have seen more than 1 Yankee game this year could suggest that Giambi and Phillips are about equal in fielding.

The sox will end up with lugo who will probbaly play very well for them but they will not utilize his talents correctly. Drew will be injured before July. Matsuzaka will win 16 or 17 games with an era near 4. And most importantly about 120 million dollars will go to no superstars, only cogs.

There is a real advantage to being closer to home so I can respect Pettitte's family's position.
He was a great Yankee. But he is not the solution now. I fear he would not be that good and his memory would be tarnished by what he would do in 2007 and beyond if signed.
Plus he would cost a draft choice.

They are not about equal in fielding Paul. What I was saying was that AP is not sufficient. The upgrade in fielding doesn't compensate for the drop in offense.

Phillips was a ROOKIE, and only had 226 at bats.
He is not great but based on his minor league stats and what I saw from him from time to time I think he has a lot of future potential and will get better.
Giambi will not get any better. He will continue to decline and face more injuries, most of which were from attempting, albeit poorly, to play 1B.
Report any abuse or spam
Infact there are only four 1B in the AL who played more than 20 games at 1B and have a worse fielding percentage than AP. And he is not even the 40th best hitting 1B. There is a reason he is a career backup Paul. He played over his head for a little bit last season. That doesn't warrant a starting job. I agree chemistry is important. But chemistry ALONE is not enough. If it were, my friends and myself would form a team and win the championship.

Phillips did seem to hit a lot better when he was playing everyday, too. I'd be willing to give him a chance to start at 1st next year--especially if we re-sign Miggy, who could back him up if he struggles-- but for whatever reason the Yanks seem to have absolutely no faith in him....so I don't think he will ever have a regular starting job in NY.

lol Paul, I agree boston is smaller and cleaner, but I don't like the fact it is smaller and I step on what isn't clean in NY so I don't really care so much. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I personally find enormous skycrapers wonderful to look at, moreso than beautiful landwork and old fashioned buildings. Like I said though, there are great things in both cities. As for civilized? If you look like you blend in and don't make people late by holding hands and forming a line on a sidewalk, New Yorkers can be the most useful and friendly people on the planet. Everytime I have needed subway information anybody was willing to lend a helping hand, I guess it is the vibe you give off, if you are confident, competant and have a minor understanding of how things operate, they are willing to help....Then of course there are some insane people which you will find anywhere....and the poor people are annoying too but the city is 20 million people you can't have perfection.

Phillips hit better for about 2 weeks, that is called a hot streak and then he severely cooled down for the next month, hence why he hit .240 or whatever. There is a reason AP was not up from the minors. The Yanks wanted a name player at every position.
The only reason any of the rookies got to the Yankees was because of injuries before Cashman had total control. Wang, Cano, Melky only came to the Yankees because of injuries.
Andy Phillips would have started on any other team long before but the Tampa faction wanted a star player like Tony Womack at every position so they could sell more tickets.
And frankly that is all some fans want: star power.
I prefer good ballplayers who will become stars.
I am sure Andy will be one of them, but only if given a chance.

I can see phillips at his absolute best hitting 20 hrs and driving in 75 and playing an above average defense and hitting around .275. His ceiling is not tremendously high and I don't even know if he will ever reach that level because he is what, 30 already?

I don't think phillips would ever become a star. I don't even think he has 20/75/.275 potential. If he could do that I'd take him in a heartbeat at first. But, I don't think the only reason he didn't get promoted to the majors before now is because the yankees wanted names at every position. Phillips is what 30 years old? When he was 24, 25, 26 the yankees were still playing players like nick johnson, karim garcia, david delucci, etc. Not stars, not big names, but quality ball players. Phillips just isn't a quality major league offensive player. He's adequate defensively, but that is it.

I am not wanting a star at every position, Paul. I am ok with Miggy at 1B or somebody else from the minors that is very good defensively and does JUST the little things. AP is just average defensively and he cant hit for power or average. He is not even a contact hitter. The only thing that AP brings is the attitude. Just that is not enough. If he improved his defense, I will be okay with the lack of offense.

LOL Fernando you want an organized city? New York is one of those with a grid pattern of streets. Even in Queens you can find a location based on the address because the address is coded to tell you the cross street.
Boston has roads originally created by cow paths.
The drunken classless brutes are what we call the governor and legislature.
But the city has a lot of charm, a lot of tradition, so much to see. Creative architecture and an engaging mix of the old and the new.
The only things Boston really lacks is good consistent pizza (it is good only in some places), good Chinese food, and the Yankees.
But I was actually spoiled living in NY by tghe pizza and Chinese food which is good at almost every mom and pop place you can find.

Minnesota's Justin Morneau edged the New York Yankees' Derek Jeter to win the American League's Most Valuable Player Award on Tuesday.
Morneau received 15 first-place votes, eight seconds, three thirds and two fourths for 320 points in voting by a panel of the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Jeter got 12 firsts, 14 seconds, one fourth and one sixth for 306 points.
Boston's David Ortiz was third with 193 points, followed by Oakland's Frank Thomas (174), Chicago's Jermaine Dye (156), Minnesota's Joe Mauer (116) and Twins pitcher Johan Santana (114), who received the other first-place vote.
Morneau hit .321 with 34 homers and 130 RBIs, helping the Twins win the AL Central for the fourth time in five years. Jeter batted .344 with 14 homers and 97 RBIs, finishing three points behind Mauer, who became the first catcher to win an AL batting title.

I'm not blaming ARod, I am blaming the stupid writers who let all this supposed "division" between Jeter and ARod influence their decision. But what I am saying is that if there is gonna be all this nonsensical buzz about the rift between ARod and Jeter (and the nonsensical buzz will obviously continue no matter what)...it is too big a distraction to the team and it needs to stop being one. The only way to make it a non issue is by trading ARod.

And as for clubhouse, we know they're all professional ball players. I don't think all that bull **** they write abou Alex disturbs the chemistry. So, I don't find any reason why we MUST trade Alex, as you suggested.

Exactly. WE know that Jeter and ARod are both too professional and hardworking to let such division disturb the team, but the media continues obsessing over it to the point where it has become such a distraction that Jeter gets screwed out of an award he very much deserved. And as a Jeter fan I cannot hang with that. Said media obsession was also a big distraction during playoffs. Because it needs to stop, someone needs to go, and that someone is obviously not going to be Jeter who plays Gold Glove defense and has led the Yankees to 4 championships. At this point the ARod stuff is so overblown that him staying on the team is a disservice not only to the Yanks but to himself as a player and a man.

But if I had a vote this year, it would have been cast for Minnesota's Justin Morneau. Because power still rules, and because we all know that as much as Jeter did to help the Yankees prevail in 2006, he could have done more.
Yes, that is a reference to the Alex Rodriguez stuff. But let's save that for later.
Report any abuse or spam
This morning the paper had the numbers there to compare one player versus another. The only player, once you subtract homeruns from runs batted in, whose RBI number was higher than Jeter's was Morneau. That, coupled with the fact that a Yankee won the prior year (A-Rod), and the Twins had that exciting late-season run, made me think that perhaps Jeter would not win. So, I'm not so much surprised as extremely disappointed.
It's pretty telling, in my mind that Morneau had 2 teammates who also received MVP votes. Ironic isn't it? If someone is MOST valuable, why should 2 other players on the same team be MOST valuable. It kind of says there were more than one valuable player on that team. Therefore, no single one was more valuable. (I know this sounds convoluted, but I think you get my meaning.) Basically, Morneau had help.
Anyway, Jeter was the most valuable player because of his everyday, day-in, day-out, contributions to his team. And no one but Jeter and A-Rod really know the true nature of their relationship, so I doubt that was a factor and it shouldn't be. There've been many MVP's who weren't the best of friends with a teammate.

Uuuuugh I am so ***** mad right now. I NEVER as long as I live want to hear another sportswriter bemoan the use of steroids. THEY OBVIOUSLY LOVE THE STUFF!!!

Seriously...Jeter is not ARod's mother. That Jeter could be blamed for ARod's failures is not fair to either of these men, but it's most unfair to Jeter since it has absolutely nothing to do with him.

Paul, believe. Alex is not my hero. My only hero is Spiderman. If you ask me which one of them I would prefer, I'd answer immediately I prefer Jeter. It's just that I disagree with you and Gina when you both say that Alex should be traded for the Yankees good health. I don't buy it. No way

And of course I agree in that just a stupid can believe A-Rod's playoff struggle is because of Jeter. That is only acceptable if it comes from a 3 year old little boy.

Once I saw that Davidoff had written that if Jeter had hit 34 homers, his clubhouse conduct (read: lack of holding ARod's hand) wouldn't matter, I got so mad that I had to close up the window and couldn't finish reading it. I think I need a nice stiff drink before I even begin to tackle Phil Taylor's comparable idiocy.

Nice points...esp. about the two-faced "love the power"/"hate the steroids" argument...
Also the fact that Morneau had two teammates in the top 10 of the vote while NONE of Jeter's teammates made the top 10.

i consider a rod and jeter like maris and mantle in 1961, I think all of the wedge between them is media related. They used to be best friends and I doubt an out of context quote in a magazine made them enemies. That doesn't seem like A rod, that doesn't seem like Jeter and regardless of who says what there is no evidence on the field that they dislike each other.

I didn't see that one coming (Jeter not winning). But I'm not too surprised as the voting tends to lean towards sluggers (especially though who hit for avg as well).
What I did see coming is the blame Alex for Jeter not winning campaign. Its no longer Alex shouldn't be a Yankee because he had two bad off seasons, now its A-Rod shouldn't be a Yankee because Jeter didn't win MVP.
Its not Alex's fault that Jeter didn't win (unless he bribed all of the voters with some extra poker chips at his fundraiser) just like its not Jeter's fault that Alex had an off year.

From Pete's blog:
This is what I was discussing about Cowley. Here is Pete's take:
UPDATE: Cowley just went on Mike & The Mad Dog and didn't represent the profession very well. He claimed the Yankees would have done just as well without Jeter in the lineup, that Ortiz kept the Red Sox in contention and that Ortiz had better numbers in the clutch than Jeter did. Never mind that the Red Sox were out of the race in mid-August, the Yankees played nearly all season without Sheff and Matsui and Jeter had better RISP numbers than Ortiz.
The only thing I can say is that his vote didn't change the race. I certainly can't speak for the methods every voter uses. But at least people are being held accountable.

And for what? To find out that Derek Jeter DID NOT win the MVP? What the f*uck? How could those ignorant, good-for-nothing, get paid for nothing, pieces of trash voters vote for Justin Morneau? I am so incredibly furious right now. I haven't been this mad in a LONG, LONG TIME.
I have been counting down the days for today, the day when Derek Jeter finally wins his first MVP award. The day when Jeter haters finally bow down to the great one, the one and only, the greatest captain/shortstop/baseball player ever to play the game. Should I even comment about this?

What gets me is the people saying "look who is in Jeter's lineup"...Excuse me, where these people paying attention?

Exactly, were they not paying attention to the fact Morneau has batting champ Mauer in his lineup? Not to mention several other good hitters? Were they not paying attention to Morneau having the best pitcher in baseball on his team?
I'm just getting home and haven't even had a chance to read most of the comments on this, but Jeter got robbed on the MVP thing. Morneau ONLY got it because of a strong showing by his WHOLE TEAM in September. The writers really blew it on this one.

So basically it is appearing that ARod cost Jeter the MVP.

Wow, I am watching a rerun of Seinfeld now, and it is weird. I'll never look at Kramer the same again!
Good thing I was always more of a Costanza gal anyway.
Took a stab at the Joel Sherman article...shouldn't have. Only got about a fourth of the way thru before getting too mad to read anymore. Let's just say that the man needs to get b*itchslapped!

I'm Dominican. Where are you from Vince? Thanks for those songs, I really appreciate it.

lol np, why did you need them? I happen to be a huge Eminem fan, umm, lyrics judgement aside. I live in florida, go to school in CT and am from NJ....I really need to come up with a better line than that

Also, I'm unpleasantly surprised that no one (that I have seen so far) is writing anything about the ridiculous double standard of complaining about how steroids have pervaded the game yet only doling out high honors like MVP to people who do exactly what steroid users do--hit lots of home runs. By NO means am I saying Morneau does roids but I'm just saying that baseball isn't exactly creating an environment where pressures to juice are shunned.

Reagrdless of the fact that his lyrics could be offensive to some I do think Eminem is one of the best lyricists that music will ever see. Traditionalists would have my head for this but I think he is a better lyricist than Bob Dylan.

Yeah, you do. I need them for a school assignment. I have to write an essay on it.

Some things Eminem can do with the english language are pretty remarkable. Everybody has the feeling of anger, success, or rubbing it in, he just verbalizes it and somehow gets everything to rhyme and sound right. It is truly amazing what he is capable of.

Are you in college or High school?

I like em, too. And he is one of the best rappers out there.

Why, where are you? LOL

Look at it the other way Gina, what steroids users do is so hard to do that they need steroids. So players who do it without the roids deserve something. Right.
But Jeter deserves the MVP. I don't care he did not get one though. I don't care abt any of these OPINION awards. You know, awards decided by polls and opinions instead of something more concrete. US media is too driven by selfish motives to have a right opinion.

College, you?

I am a junior in high School. I'm only 15!! But I'll be 16 next month. But don't let that influence you in down-sizing my baseball related comments because 1) I am very mature for my age and 2) I know a little something about baseball. That's why I'm here!!

lol I'll keep that in mind, I certainly wouldn't want people thinking less of me for my age, but then again my baritone voice should show them where I stand! That'll show'em. When you say your dominican, do you mean you live in the dominican republic? How do you feel about the MVP voting Elizabeth?

lol what the ****. How are you 15 and a Junior in hs? Don't you turn 16 sophomore year?

No, I don't live in the Dominican Republic. My parents were born there. I was born in New York, manhattan to be exact. But I live in brooklyn now. And I hate it that Derek Jeter didn't win his first MVP this year. He should have won. Morneau was not even the MVP of his own team, let alone the American League. And while I stand in my opinion the Mo Rivera is and always will be the MVP of this team, Jeter is just as important and valuable. I don't care what the results say; Derek Jeter is the 2006 AL MVP.

It is the miracle of being a fan of 32 of the 30 major league teams. It makes you older when pretending to be a teenager.
