Mark your calendars
The Yankees released their 2007 regular-season schedule on Friday. Some of the highlights:
The 105th home opener at Yankee Stadium will take place on Monday, April 2 at 1:05 p.m., kicking off an 81-game home schedule which will feature nine games against each of the team's American League East foes, including the rival Red Sox.
The Yankees will host Interleague series against the Mets (June 15-17), Diamondbacks (June 12-14) and Pirates (June 8-10) -- all former World Series opponents. The Bombers will visit the Giants (June 22-24), Rockies (June 19-21) and Mets (May 18-20) as part of Interleague Play.
New York and Boston meet for the first of 19 times on April 20 at Fenway Park, opening a three-game series. The Red Sox visit the Bronx a week later, as the two rivals play three games at Yankee Stadium from April 27-29. The two teams meet again six times in May, three times in August and three times in September.
Joe Torre's team will get its first look at Gary Sheffield and the defending AL champion Tigers on August 16, the first of four games at Yankee Stadium. A week later, the two teams renew acquaintances in Detroit for four games.

Mark, thanks for the GREAT news about future Hall of Famer Miguel Cairo wanting to stay with the Yanks where he belongs!! :D Now we just need Cash to hurry up and sign him!
And thanks for the schedule information also. Gaaah I hate when they play a day game on Opening Day! Oh well, I'm excited anyway.. gonna be going a lot this year, squeezing in as many games as possible before the new Stadium opens!
Haven't been on in a few days how is everyone? Well I hope -- how bout this freaky December warmth? It must have been 70 this afternoon...

Just a gut feeling about Villone, and I don't like it, but I'm afraid last year was his best. I have visions of Quantrill....
I had an interesting thought about Igawa and Matsuzaka. I wonder how much effect the signing of one will have on the other in terms of contract size. If we can sign Igawa quickly and not low-ball him, will it drive the price up on Matsuzaka for the Sox? I wouldn't be surprised to see Boras hold out as long as possible to try to see what Igawa goes for.

Glad to finally see the complete schedule...Time to mark my calendar for April 9, 10, 11, the days the Yankees come and visit the Twinkies. Unfortunately I think they are weeknights (all 7:10 CT starts) so I will likely only be able to go to one.
It's title game Saturday in college football, though 2 out of the three games will simply decide which mediocre ACC and Big 12 teams go to the BCS. The SEC title game is the game of the day, with the winner going to the BCS (Fla. can go to the National Championship w. a win and a USC loss) and the loser exiled to the Capital One Bowl. Also, USC-UCLA and Army-Navy, both fun rivalries.
Looks like trade,FA discussions are heating up; should be a fun few weeks.

Mark, just a question. Is it possible to show pictures of the Stadium's new site? It was just an empty lot in early October when I was up for Game 2, and it would be interesting to see how it looks now.
I am sure that if there are pictures available, that fans (especially those who can't get to NY) would love to follow the progress of the new Stadium, say, how the site looks in December, then April, August, next December...and so on. It might be interesting.
Just a thought.

There's something in Pete's blog about a right handed 1B named Julio Zuleta who is playing in Japan. He seems to hit pretty well against Matsuzaka. But he is 31 years old and his numbers are not outstandings. I still prefer the option I commented about a week ago. I'm talking about Luis Alfonso García.

I forgot about him, Jorge. he looked really good last year in spring training, though I thought he was in the outfield.
Personally I would prefer sticking with Andy Phillips. Many people forget he was a rookie last year so I think he will get better with regular play. Extrapolating his play last year to a who season he was at about a 16 HR, 70 RBI guy, but I think he will improve. Short of getting Mark Teixeira I would be happy with Phillips.
That Zuleta guy is being flogged by the serial posters on Pete's and other blogs and now Pete pointed out even his agent has inflated his statistics.
But I have to say that Garcia did seem interesting and is worth another look.

I was up for Game 2. Ironically, those pictures are from the day I was up. Just was wondering how it is now.
Zuleta hit 109 HR in the last 3 years in Japan. He did have a cup of tea (so to speak) with the Cubs a few years back. You can check out baseballreference.com for that. I don't know about his D, but his numbers project to Craig Wilson numbers. .247 career average, strikeout to walk ratio not the best....
Whoever it is will hit 8th. The rest of the lineup is pretty much set.

Paul:
These were the comments about Luis Alfonso García. As you can see, I'm not alone in this. Good to see you are another one who thinks he deserves an opportunity. I'd like to hear Mark's comments about García.
Speaking about 1B. There is an interesting mexican player. Maybe some of you remember him. I'm referring to Luis Alfonso García. He plays both RF and 1B. Right handed batter. 6'4". 180 pounds. 28 years old (05/11/78).
He was invited to Tampa last Spring Training. I don't know the reason, but he didn't reported early. He just played 11 games with as few as 13 AB's. But hear this. 4 R, 5 H, 2 HR, 8 RBI, 1 SO, .846 SLG and .385 AVG. But at the end of Spring Training Yanks offered him to go to the Minors, and he preferred to return to México. We were so crowded at the OF with Matsui, Damon, Sheff, Bubba, Melky and Bernie. And with Giambi and AP at first. So, there was no place for him. Back in México he played for Monterrey (AAA). His stats? Again, very good ones. 64 G, 229 AB, 51 R, 81 H, 19 HR, 60 RBI, 30 SO, .646 SLG and .354 AVG. I really hope he'll receive an invitation again. I hope Joe and Donnie has not forgotten him. I think he is ready for the Majors. Right handed 1B. Not expensive at all. If you see this, Mark, remember Brian Cashman that Luis Alfonso is waiting for the invitation. At least, let's watch him in Tampa. No risk at all

Yeah I remember Luis A. Garcia from the WBC, Jorge. He was actually with the Yanks in spring training but he opened the season at Columbus and ended up being released I think...I was rooting for him though.
And did anyone else notice that the AAA team this year is gonna be good for a change? Haha no longer a bunch of people trying to keep their careers alive.

I too was wondering what happened to Garcia. I remember being impressed with his stats in ST last year and was wondering who the **** he was. I'm with Jorge on this one. Get this guy back to Florida this Spring. At least give him a real shot to land the 1st base job.

Mark Newman, you can continue to delete our civilized comments on your blog while you allow the filth of fagan to continue unabated.
You, sir, are responsible for allowing the filth and hatred on these blogs.
You, sir, put children at risk from a stalker.
You, sir, MUST take more action than deleting the posts of those who complain about harassment which you seem to condone.

That post was also on Newman's blog which will be deleted in moments.

These blogs are no longer a safe place for children and teens when they must be subjected to the language and personal attacks that MLB.com allows.
Parents should not let children come to mlb.com nor any of their ancillary or afficliated websites.
Parents should ceasing buying merchandise from MLB.com.
Parents should cease to patronize sponsors and advertisers of Major League Baseball until such time as MLB assuers that it can provide a place safe from harassment and stalkers.
Report any abuse or spam
I agree, Paul. It is a shame that MLB.com does not have measures in place that allow blog moderators to prevent comments from a certain IP address and/or screen name. After all, MLB is not a mom-and-pop business. It has the money and technology to give blog moderators the freedom to keep deviants like Fagan from transforming what is usually a pleasant forum for baseball fans into a platform for his anger and hatred. And it is normal for people to become so tired of this that they lash out at the source of the anger and hatred, as I have done at times.
The bottom line is - everyone of the Yankees and Sox blogs, and individual blogs like mine - get along fine. There may be some heated debates between Yankees and Sox fans, but it sticks to baseball and not personal attacks. When Fagan is here, his unprovoked defamatory remarks evoke angry responses. Even if we ignore him - as we have been doing on all three blogs - his comments still litter these spaces until Mark, Ian and I discover them and delete them.
It's time that something is done. I suggest that every regular write a complaint on Mark Newman's blog - and also contact MLB.com corporate. And every time he posts something defamatory - which is every day he appears - copy it, paste it and e-mail it to Mark Newman and MLB.com. We must continue to complain until MLB.com decided to take action and ban Fagan's IP address (and anyone else like him, of which there isn't right now).
Report any abuse or spam
I have no idea what's going on. I blame the offseason. Going Yankee-less for an extended period of time is putting everyone on edge.
Report any abuse or spam
Paul, Mike, Jeff, Ellen, and all, I agree with you about Fagan, and I agree that MLB should not delete the complaints abouts him/it. However, I'm not sure there is much they can do other than delete the foul comments after they're made. They can probably block the usual posting address which will just encourage it to log in under a new name. They might even be able to block it's usual server/IP address, but then it simply moves to a neutral server, wi-fi locale, or public library. Maybe I'm missing something, but I believe if I wanted to get around blocking attempts I could with ease and so can it.
The more we allow it to anger us, annoy us, get under our skin, the closer it comes to winning. No, we shouldn't have to read that filth, but giving it our attention is like giving oxygen to an ember. Unless there's technology that I don't know about that allows MLB to identify and block an individual based on actual identity, the best we can do is ignore it and have it deleted ASAP after it's posted.
Report any abuse or spam
Right, Jeff. Even here as Yankee fans we disagree strongly on some points but we still respect each other as people and actually enjoy spending blog time with each other and with our leader, Mark.
This should all be FUN. The harassment is clearly intended to end the fun. He has so much as stated that. But MLB is compliant.
Report any abuse or spam
Agreed, Andy, and we have been good about not responding to it. But last night was the proverbial straw.
MLB has countless resources in what has been a record year for them.
They have the legal and technological means to pursue this if they wish to. Instead they allow one person, using that term lightly, to attempt to ruin the experience of many.
And worse many who do not blog here read this stuff and are subjected to it far too much.
Report any abuse or spam
It is my guess that this is by far the largest and most active blog on the MLB system.
We cannot allow this to grind us to a halt.
Report any abuse or spam
Agreed, Paul, but again, what technology is there to identify an individual before the posting goes up? I guess they could have a full-time live censor in place, but that would severely delay our posts, and when we're all blogging in-game, that would be extremely annoying. Again, they could block its IP address, but that's easy to get around. And blocking its log-in name just means it uses new unknown names, making it harder to immediately identify it.
Report any abuse or spam
Andy, there are technological and legal ways, but I think it would not be wise to address them here.
I think we made out point here. But I am not finished.
I did decide no one is getting MLB Christmas gifts from me. They are getting returned. Originally I thought NFL gear will replace it and in most cases that or and NHL thing will do.
I am not spending a dime on MLB at this point.
Report any abuse or spam
Paul, I posted this on the other site, too. I'm no legal expert, what do you think?
"I suppose adding a terms of use agreement when creating an account would give some legal recourse. Then they could hunt him down and sue him to death. If so, maybe you can suggest that to MLB."
Report any abuse or spam
Well, it made another name for itself.

Back to important matters. Paul, I'm beginning to move your direction about Andy Phillips. Unless we can get Teixeira, I'd just as soon give him a chance to play full-time. Our line-up is strong enough to have that luxury. If he doesn't make it, then make a move before the trade deadline.

Gedwards, either you are another screen name for Fagan (which I think is the case), or you have not been clearly reading our comments. This poster we are eluding to has consistently over the last several months littered several blogs with racist, defamatory and hurtful remarks. He is THE ONLY person (who presents himself with numerous screen names) who causes any tension on the Yankees, Sox and BoSox Banter blogs. It's not venomous to stand up for all of us who have consistently been targets on this thing's anger and hatred. When he is here, there is tension. When he goes away, all of the blogs have a normal tone - with baseball fans enjoying forums to talk and debte about baseball, and nothing more. So don't make a post unless you know the full story.
Report any abuse or spam
OK. I'm done talking about this for the time being. MLB.com is receiving multiple complaints. It's up to them to take action, and it is up to us to try to ignore and not respond to it since his comments will be deleted.
Report any abuse or spam
I think that is a strong option, Andy.
Yet I am still hoping that they can find a new home for Jason Giambi which would give them a lot more flexibility in the DH position with maybe bringing in Bernie against left handers and Matsui against right handers. That would allow Melky to be in the field when Matsui DHs.
I also liked the guy Jorge mentioned earlier, Garcia. He is certainly worth another look.
But as for Andy P, I think saying here is the job; it is yours to keep will give him a lot more confidence than the way it was handled last year.

Ohio State will beat anyone they play. Michigan is the only one that will have a prayer.

You're right Paul! April 9-11 is Spring Break here! Now I know what I'm doing those days!!! Thank you! Wonder how many I can go to, and if there is anyone else on here who may go to one of those games.
The Packers get the Jets today in what could be a very good game. With the Lions and Vikings after this, a .500 season isn't out of the question, and that might be the incentive Favre needs to come back for another year or two. Aaron Rodgers just is not the answer.
If I'm right on the BCS:
Ntl. Championship
Ohio State vs. Florida
Rose Bowl
Michigan vs. USC
Fiesta Bowl
Oklahoma vs. Boise State
Orange Bowl
Wake Forest vs. Louisville
Sugar Bowl
LSU vs. Notre Dame

Thanks for pointing that out to Mark, NY Angel. Mark is the one w/the snide comments about "Cowgirls" and "rooting against them" all the time and obnoxious fans. But once the foot is on the other shoe, one is the bad guy. I am sure if the Cowboys lose today, Mark w/have some snide comments, just like when they lost to the Skins. Let's play fair around here Angel. Mark was saying how great USC was. All I said was they are over rated and would never beat Ohio State. Another nice comment, "hatred of the Cowgirls"...you sound like Mark now Angel.....

You know why I can't stand the Cowgirls? It has less to do with the actual team (although that helps) and more to do with fans like you.

I mean this is a *NY* Yankees blog so it's not exactly brain surgery to assume that many of us probably like the Giants and hate Dallas. So WHY come on here and get us all riled up? Personally I would not say anything about how much I hate Dallas if the whole "typical Cowgirl fan" smack-talking was not thrown in my face here every time a game is played.

I missed the youtube link fun yesterday, but a question for all my fellow youtube users:
Do you know where I can find a video of Miguel Cabrera hitting one of Orioles pitching's IBB balls and catching the O's snoozing in the field? From interleague this summer? I have seen it on there before, but when I looked the other day I couldn't find it.

I think the Rangers are going to sign Zito..they've been having meetings with him and Boras lately I heard. Personally, I prefer the Yanks to stay away from him. I read that Cash wants to fill the last rotation spot from within and I agree--hope they go with Rasner.

Russ, I didn't say it wasn't a personal foul, the point is michigan was one mistake away from winning, just like you can argue without a prevent defense osu would have won by 10. The fact we are arguing over how close the game was proves if they rematched away from ohio state, the game would be very close. I was right the first time saying it would be close, and if they played again, which they won't this year, I would be right again.
Report any abuse or spam
Thanks Andrew. Yeah I want to put it on myspace--it is the funniest thing I've seen in baseball in awhile!
Report any abuse or spam
I disagree Vince. OSU would beat Michigan by two touchdowns if they played again. I am not arguing over how close the game was. I think OSU if they didn't play prevent defense would have won by 10, but they did, so in my mind, a rematch, wouldn't be a close game. OSU has dominated Michigan over the past few years. Around here the coach of Michigan is called "Lloyd Cooper".....he can't beat OSU.....I rather have had Zito than Igawa...just my opinion....

Oh and BTW I meant to ask if everybody heard about Albert Pujols' little meltdown where he cried like a woman about how Ryan Howard shouldn't have won the MVP because the Phillies didnt make playoffs. Puhleaze...
1) Phillies won more games than Cards...should we reward Pujols for playing in a weak division??
2) Pujols just won a World Series! Why is he even THINKING about the MVP?! He needs to get schooled by Jeter stat! :D
And I never again want to hear about what a nice guy Pujols is. Every time I turn around he is saying someone else didn't deserve something they earned (first Tom Glavine, now Howard)...what does he think he's God or something? Get over yourself AP!
Report any abuse or spam
Pujols is the antithesis of Jeter. He needs to learn a lesson from Jeter. If you didn't win the MVP, step back, congratulate the guy who got it, and go for it the next year.
Report any abuse or spam
So by not playing at home and having not played for a few weeks to ruin team chemistry, now you think ohio state would win by two touchdowns and make it a less close game? How does that make any sense whatsoever. OSU did not have in their game plan, make it a close game, they played prevent for a reason. If the situation were the same, they would do it again. A 10 pt game with the national championship on the line is not garbage time, so if they did prevent it was by design and the design failed. Like I said, if not for that personal foul, michigan wins, and that was in osu. In even territory, it makes little to no sense (especially with the reasoning that the coach played a defense he would inevitably play again) osu would win by more. Not saying they wouldn't win, but if they played it would be close again, just like last time.
I hope florida pulls off a miracle. Then they would have the nba championship, the ncaa championship, the ncaa football championship, have won the world series within 5 years, and two winners away from a stanley cup

Sam, anyone from NY knows that typical team alignment as far as fans are concerned is usually Yankees-Giants-Rangers or Mets-Jets-Islanders. Very few crossover, for some strange reason.

Yikes, Detroit leading the Pats.
Kat, that is not necessarily true.
I originally was Yankees-Giants-Knicks-Nets (when they were ABA)-Rangers.
But when the Islanders were born I became an Islander fan, lving on Long Island. And when the Nets moved to the NBA and New Jersey I lost interest in them. But since I did not like the Jets I liked the Patriots.
So for most of my life it was Yankees
Giants and Pats
Knicks
Islanders
However the Knicks and Islanders are no longer professional teams.

Russ blowing a simple penalty call out of proportion and turning it into dramatic situations that are inevitably unrealistic, is a weak argument tactic and is rather transparent.
I am the one claiming had michigan not made one penalty mistake they would win, you are the one claiming that had osu changed their entire defensive game plan in the 2nd half, that the game MIGHT have been less close. So now who is the one reaching here, you or me?
I don't know for sure that if the penalty is not made, (which I admit it was blatant) that michigan wins. But if you believe in momentum, and predetermined outcomes, then michigan would have defintely won. You can't deny it, look at the final score, it would have been osu leading by 6 and not 11, and michigan took the very next drive for a touchdown.
And finally, a statement streaming with statistics and fact like "if michigan played osu again, they would lose" does not particularly convince me or anybody else interested in much of anything. Besides, missing the argument, which was if the game would be close, you also seem to forget usc and texas last year, which is that anything can happen in a championship game (remember the world series this year? Or, dare I say, the 2004 alcs?) Throw in the rivalry factor in the biggest college stage and it is almost guaranteed to be close. But like I said, the whole argument is moot because it will be florida vs ohio state.

Yeah the Knicks had been a mess for awhile. I quit following them and the NBA in general in the late 90s and did return till the excellence of one Dwayne Wade brought me back. But I used to at least hope for Knicks to do well, now with Thomas in charge I can't even do that. My dad HATED those late 80s Piston teams and raised me to do the same. And I was always a Larry Bird fan so started hating Thomas even more when he ruined all the hard work Larry had done with the Pacers.

I am a Heat fan now that I live close to them and the knicks have turned me off to professional basketball completely. I must disagree with you on Bird. The year before Bird arrived (1978-1979 season, the one immediately after Havlicek retired) the Celtics were 29-53. In Bird's rookie year, one WITHOUT Parish or McHale, the Celtics went 61-21 and went to the Eastern Conference finals. That's a 32 game turnaround, due largely to Bird.
The following year, Bird's 2nd, is when they got Parish and McHale and won the NBA Championship.

If you watch the whole incident, Kermit was punched first by Kevin Kunnert, heard someone running up behind him, turned and saw an opposing jersey coming fast, and reflexively swung.
A couple of weeks later SI ran this story:
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/features/flashback/cuw/washington/
NBA TV ran a documentary last season about Kermit. He spends most of his time now raising money for food and medicine for Kenyan children. This is a good article about the reconciliation between Kermit and Rudy T.

First of all Mike, a show is not a show without you. No idea why they would consider having a show without you on it.
It seems kind of rude that they do not better communicate with you.
Start your own show and take away all their advertisers and make the big bucks and drive them to the poorhouse.

Most of the world remembers it as a cheap hit because that how it was reported. The story behind the incident wasn't nearly as widely reported. It's sad, because Kermit's such a good man.

The NY Post is a rag that should not be used to papertrain puppies but they once had a good sports department.
Sherman is a mindless hack and sounds like King is a frontrunner also.
I don't read them except when I read Sherman's stupid article as to why Jeter should not be MVP because he was not having conjugal visits with ARod.

No, yesterday's where the Arkansas player tried to over-the-shoulder a catch on his own 4 and fumbled in into the end zone. Florida fell on it for a TD.

haha oh yes I saw that as well Mike, very bizarre.

Apparently there is a lot of drinking going on at these winter meetings so it might be a good chance for Cashman to unload Pavano, and hopefully Johnson too.
And I was thinking of an ARod for Scarlett Johnsson trade.

Did anybody notice as Pete pointed out the brutal schedule Yanks have starting I believe May 11th for like 10-15 games?

Dallas defense is HORRID, can't they double team Shockey? Gees Zimmerman...

This game is over. Glad I took the Giants. Dallas' defense is toast, been out there too long. Romo first bad game of the year. Glad I went w/my wallet instead of my heart w/this game. Dallas can't beat the Giants, mental block.

whoops.
Romo wasn't good the first time around vs the giants either and eli has a habit of playing well vs the cowboys (see his first career win).

Your right Vince. Manning KILLS the Cowboys

Dallas can't stop Shockey, or Tiki, or Eli...18 play drive, there defense is tired

May 18th-june7th is going to be rough. Mets redsox Angels...then toronto on the road with boston and chicago. That is tough. Then the rest of june should nt be too difficult, the mets and oakland are the only decent teams and oakland is at home.
July 12-29th is almost a joke. Tampa, toronto at home, tampa, kc and baltimore.
And thank god this year we end the season with some easier games. after boston in mid september, we have baltimore and toronto at home followed by tampa and baltimore on the road. By then toronto should be playing their prospects.

Romo is better than Bledsoe, that is a plus. Game over

Vince, anonymous posters are really lame. And what is pinstripes plus?

Not if the giants keep moving backwards.

Hopefully, Giants will lose next week
Report any abuse or spam
Who do the giants even have next week? The panthers? If it is they will definitely lose. If the giants win this game they will finish the season 4-1 and probably have a home game wildcard weekend.

Giants cheat LOL

We can beat the saints, we will beat the eagles and redskins and I don't remember the last team. I fear nobody head to head in our division.
Report any abuse or spam
yes, Giants at Panthers next week....and Giants at Skins last last game of season...I will wear my Redskin shirt that day LOL

after this weeek, Dallas plays 3 out of 4 at home. They play Philly, Detroit, and New Orleans at home and Atlanta on the road.....
Report any abuse or spam
giants have the saints and eagles at home after this and the redskins on the road. Assuming they lose to the panthers whom I don't remember them ever beating, they should easily beat the eagles in the meadowlands and the redskins anywhere. I am predicting a victory over the saints.
Report any abuse or spam
dallas will beat philly and detroit, and probably the saints, I don't think all four though. They will both probably be 10-6 when all is said and done but the giants will win the division

Dallas still in good shape to make playoffs of lose today. They hold tie braker over Carolina, so actually, Carolina and Giants is good game for Dallas fans next week. Obviously, rather win the division....vince is right...Florida vs OSU....

Russ ... They're completely different scenarios.
Redskins-Cowboys is a huge rivalry. Ohio State-USC is not. If I was a Michigan fan, I could understand why you would revel in my team's loss.
Getting that much enjoyment out of someone's team losing -- when they are not associated with your team whatsoever -- is just strange.
Root against my Redskins all you want. You can know I'm rooting against your Cowboys. As for the Buckeyes? I couldn't care less what happens to them, win or lose.

Wow, after reading the last bunch of posts, it's amazing how quickly Russ gave up on his Dallas team. I guess he's the same kind of Cowboys fan as he is a Yankees fan.

Tanyon Sturtze is gone? So sad, let me go cry now.
I never really liked him at all and got very frustrated when Torre started trusting him too much. Thank you for the one decent half season and good-bye.
I predicted the BCS games correctly eariler, no surprises. A lot of these games could be rather dull. Louisville-WF? ummm...not what the BCS had in mind, I'm sure. Boise State will get killed by Oklahoma, and I don't see Notre Dame's D standing up to LSU very well. At least the Rose Bowl is a very good matchup, and the championship has some potential. Don't underestimate Florida, going 12-1 in this year's SEC is a feat.
Packers got slaughtered absolutely by the Jets today, it was disgusting. Disappointing Cowboys-Giants game as well.
Is it baseball season yet?
Report any abuse or spam
I predicted last season that Sturtze would not be back due to his age, the nature of his injury, and the fact that he was trying to hide his injury from the ballclub.
